Tonight's WWE Superstars on WGN America was the New Year's Eve edition of the show which featured a main event tag team match as Carlito & Jack Swagger teamed up to take on Chris Masters and MVP from Raw. Also on the card, WWE Divas Champ Melina faces Alicia Fox in WWE divas non-title action, while ECW stars Shelton Benjamin and Vance Archer square off in the ring.After the pyro, Michael Cole wished all fans a Happy New Years on the New Year's edition of WWE Superstars. Tonight the Raw WWE Divas kick off Superstars. Melina arrived out to show off her Divas title on the way to the ring.
Melina vs. Alicia Fox
An early lockup resulted in Melina backing Alicia into a corner, before the ref broke it up. Alicia shoved Melina then went for a clothesline with Melina doing her "Matrix-like" move. Alicia recovered for a bridge pin attempt. Melina escaped for a near fall of her own, before Alicia escaped out of the ring. She began to walk up the ramp, then ran, but Melina ran up after her and dragged her back to the ring. As Melina got on the apron, Alicia kicked her off to regain control. On the outside she tossed Melina in by her hair. Back in the ring, Alicia kept a foot on Melina's back and pulled her hair in the corner.Alicia started to slap Melina around on the mat before applying a hold to stretch Melina back in a submission. Alicia broke it and slammed Melina face first into the mat. Melina got up and threw elbows but Alicia shoved her to the mat. Next up was a backbreaker with Alicia bending Melina across her knee. Melina fought out of it though, and tripped Alicia down for a near fall.
Melina was in control and had Alicia layed across the middle part of the corner so she could drop on her from the top with both knees. Alicia hit a huge backbreaker on Melina then went for her near the ropes. Melina quickly climbed up on Alicia for the Sunset flip pin from the ropes.
Winner: Melina wins via pinfall over Alicia Fox.
Ask the Divas focused on New Year's traditions and resolutions. This week's featured WWE divas were Beth Phoenix, Mickie James, Maria, Natalya, Katie Lea and Rosa Mendes.
Shelton Benjamin vs. Vance Archer
Josh Matthews and Byron Saxton were on hand to commentate on the Gold Standard's match against newcomer Vance Archer.Archer started hammering away from the start, then slapped Benjamin. Shelton responded by tackling him down to punch away, then ducked Archer's punch to slam him. Shelton continued to beat on Archer and tried to whip him to the ropes, but Archer countered to knock him down. He followed with a Full Nelson drop to the mat for a near fall, then beat on Shelton more. He layed Shelton across the ropes then ran and jumped on Shelton's back. Archer used a headlock down on the mat trying to wear Shelton down.
Shelton stood up and dropped down with a neckbreaker. Shelton got up and was in control. Archer whipped him to the corner, but Shelton jumped off it back onto Archer to take him down. Shelton ducked a clothesline then did a belly-to-belly into a bridge pin, but Archer kicked out.
Archer hung Shelton upside down in the corner and punished him from the outside. Archer got back in and knelt down to taunt Shelton. Shelton slapped him with a free hand. This enraged Archer to the point he ignored the ref's count and kept kicking away on Shelton in the corner. After five seconds, the ref called for the bell. Archer watched the ref attend to Shelton, then went over and grabbed his opponent for more. He finished things with his finisher and a smile.
Winner: Shelton Benjamin wins due to disqualification of Vance Archer.
Cryme Tyme was shown walking backstage on their way out for Smackdown's upcoming tag match.
Cryme Tyme vs. Mike Knox & Charlie Haas
Todd Grisham and Matt Striker were now in the house to cover Smackdown's match of the evening. At one point during the contest, Shad Gaspar jumped off the corner to take down Knox with a shoulder tackle. He got up on the opposite corner, and Charlie Haas came over on the apron to distract Shad. Shad hopped down to go at Haas on the corner, allowing Knox to run and clip Shad's leg. With Shad down, Haas tagged in to apply more punishment. He pulled Shad's leg back in a grueling submission hold. Shad crawled towards the bottom rope and eventually grabbed it to break the hold. Haas kicked Shad some more but Shad got up to punch away at Haas. Haas took him right back down with a leg trip, then brought Knox back in. Knox did a running move from the ropes to run into Shad's hurt leg, then continued to target that injury.Haas came in yet again, but this time Shad was able to clothesline him to the mat from out of the corner. JTG started to stomp on the apron to rally his partner. Haas made a tag, and Knox came in to grab Shad's leg. Shad kicked Knox away to make the tag. Haas also tagged in but was on the receiving end of JTG's fire. JTG with several moves including a face first Mugshot slam from the corner. JTG had the cover but Knox came in to hit a leg drop. Shad came over to clothesline Knox to the outside. Haas kicked Shad in the leg to knock him out of the ring. As Haas turned around, JTG did his bulldog style move to take Haas down for the pinfall.
Winners: Cryme Tyme wins via pinfall over Mike Knox & Charlie Haas.
Chris Masters & MVP vs. Carlito & Jack Swagger
Raw finished up the show with a tag team main event. Commentary team Michael Cole and Jerry Lawler were back to preside over the match. MVP came out as the first competitor in the match. Next was Chris Masters accompanied by Eve Torres. Their opponents came out next, Carlito followed by Jack Swagger.Carlito and MVP started things off, with Carlito driving his opponent to the corner then punching and kicking away on him. He hammered Porter down to the mat, then whipped him to the opposite corner. MVP escaped from there to clothesline Carlito for a near fall. Carlito regained control to tag Swagger in. Swagger had control for a bit until MVP came from against the ropes to knock him down several times. He hit a facebuster on Swagger then went for the Ballin' Elbow drop and hit it. Swagger rolled to the outside to avoid a pin, so MVP jumped out over the top rope to take Swagger down outside the ring. Superstars went to break.
When the show returned, Masters and Carlito regained control thanks to Carlito distracting MVP from the apron. Carlito was in the ring taking it to MVP. The heels continued to keep MVP away from a tag to Masters while wearing him down. MVP finally got to his feet as Swagger restrained him with an arms behind the back hold. MVP jumped to try to make a tag, but Swagger caught him in a Bear hug. MVP avoided Swagger's move then did a belly to belly to throw Swagger. Masters came in on fire, knocking Carlito down then knocking Swagger off the apron.
Masters was able to press Carlito overhead then dropped him for a slam. He made his pecs dance then signaled for the Masterlock. As Carlito stood up, Masters applied the Masterlock. However, Swagger got back in the ring to attack. Masters released the hold, ducked Swagger and put him in the Masterlock, then shoved Swagger towards the ropes. MVP came in to take Swagger out over the top rope. With Masters distracted by all that, Carlito was back up and quickly hit the Backstabber to pick up the victory for his team. Eve came over to help out her man Masters from the apron. Swagger and Carlito celebrated their victory in the ring, then backed up the ramp as Superstars closed.
Winners: Carlito & Jack Swagger win via pinfall over Chris Masters & MVP.
