What Every Fan Should Know About WWE

A list of facts and info about the World Wrestling Entertainment:

- Roderick James "Jess" McMahon, grandfather of Vince, created the CWC (Capitol Wrestling Coproration) with his business parter Raymond Mondt prior to 1953. They joined the NWA (National Wrestling Association) in 1953. Ten years later, the CWC broke away from the NWA. It then became known as the World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF). In 1979, they shortened its name to World Wrestling Federation (WWF). It was sued by the World Wildlife Fund (also WWF) in 2000 and forced to change its name to World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) in 2002. You'll often see footage of old WWF events with the WWF logos blurred out now.

- In March 1963, Buddy Rogers became the first wrestler to win the original WWWF World Heavyweight Championship (he defeated Atonino Rocca in a tournament finals match). The longest reign for a WWF/WWE Title holder was Bruno Sammartino who held the WWF belt for a total of 2,803 days, or nearly 8 years. The most title reigns belongs to the Rock, who had 7 reigns as the WWF/WWE champ.

See Wikipedia's list of champions.

- Vince McMahon didn't always have the "Chairman role" on the shows, as he used to commentate on matches alongside guys like Jesse the Body Ventura, Gorilla Monsoon, Macho Man Randy Savage and Jerry Lawler. Vince become more involved in matches with the Bret Hart vs. Shawn Michaels controversy and then once Stone Cold Steve Austin came into WWE.

- The main headquarters for WWE is located in Stamford, Connecticut. Vince McMahon also has a mansion in Greenwich, Connecticut where Stephanie and Shane went to school. WWE also has offices in Los Angeles and New York and international offices in London and Toronto.

- The original Pay-Per-Views that WWE would run annually were Royal Rumble, King of the Ring, Wrestlemania, Summerslam and Survivor Series. Over the years many variations of events have been added with WWE now having a Pay Per View just about each month of the year.

- The 1st Wrestlemania was held in 1985 at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The build-up to it involved cross-promotions with MTV, known as "Rock 'n' Wrestling Connection". Hulk Hogan, Andre the Giant, Tito Santana and Ricky "the Dragon" Steamboat all had matches on the card. Vince McMahon's first "Superbowl of Wrestling" was a huge success for the company and featured celebrities such as Cyndi Lauper and Mr. T.

- The "Grand Slam Champion" refers to any wrestler who has won the WWF Championship, the WWF Intercontinental Championship, the WWF European Championship and the WWF World Tag Team Championship. Shawn Michaels became the first to do this in 1997. Only five other wrestlers have achieved this status since HBK: Triple H, Chris Jericho, Kurt Angle, Eddie Guerrero and Rob Van Dam. Potential future members of this exclusive club are Val Venis, Jeff Hardy and William Regal (they would need to win the WWE or World Heavyweight Title).

- The WWF hit a low point in the wake of allegations of steroid abuse and distribution made against it in 1994; there were also allegations of sexual harassment made by WWF employees. Vince McMahon was eventually exonerated, but it was a public relations nightmare for the WWF. The steroid trial cost the WWF an estimated $5 million at a time when revenues were at an all-time low.
