Christmas Tweets from WWE Divas & Superstars

Christmas 2010 is here! This year's holidays brought plenty of gifts to the WWE Universe, as well as to the superstars and divas in World Wrestling Entertainment. Many of the wrestlers are happy to have their health, while others are celebrating recent championship victories. As we close out 2010, The Miz holds the WWE Championship, Edge has won the World Heavyweight Championship for a 10th time, Dolph Ziggler is Intercontinental Champion, Daniel Bryan is United States Champion, Natalya is the Divas champion, and Santino Marella holds the tag titles along with Vladimir Kozlov.

So let's take a quick look at a variety of the "tweets" coming from the Twitter profiles of the various superstars and divas of WWE!

Of course the big news right before the holidays was that WWE Superstar Kaval was released just yesterday. Word is Kaval didn't like the hectic travel schedule and he requested his release.

WWE action figures by Mattel

On a recent episode of Smackdown, General Manager Theodore Long was backstage congratulating WWE Diva Maria Kanellis on her upcoming appearance on the "Celebrity Apprentice" reality TV show. Smackdown consultant Vickie Guerrero decided to get involved and asked Maria to demonstrate her business skills by trying to talk up the new line of WWE action figures by Mattel. Maria did a good job of showing off some of the new action figures including Rey Mysterio, Undertaker and John Cena. Teddy Long mentioned Vickie's action figure is probably the biggest one of them all, but once Great Khali entered the picture he changed his mind.

The new lineup of WWE action figures by Mattel was introduced via WWE.com on January 1, 2010. Previously LJN, Hasbro and Jakks Pacific all had contracts with WWE to produce their action figures. The last was Jakks Pacific which handled production from 1996-2009. A deal between Mattel and WWE was reached earlier this year, and there will be several different series of figures created for both kids and serious collectors. The new Mattel action figures look pretty true to form including many of the clothing items, accessories like MVP's gold chains, and tattoos that the current WWE favorites wear.

A WWE.com section showcases gallery pictures of the various series of Mattel action figures including the Basic Series 1, Elite Series 1, Flexforce Series 1, and Entrance Greats Series 1. A Two-Pack series features tag team partners and rivals, including a set of Shawn Michaels & Chris Jericho with HBK delivering a Superkick in the package.

Amazon.com currently sells the new WWE action figures created by Mattel's brand new toy deal. Some of the WWE figures are almost sold out or sold out already. Upon last check, action figures depicting Kofi Kingston, Triple H and John Cena had just 1 more in stock. It's hard to tell if this first series of WWE figures will become rare and a highly sought-after collectible, but many other first series of figures have become so in the past including Star Wars, GI Joe and Transformers toys.

WWE Divas & NCAA Basketball

The WWE Divas are celebrating the 2009 NCAA College Basketball Tournament in stunning fashion. The 2009 Men's College Basketball tourney started on Thursday and WWE has tied in the theme with its hottest women wrestlers. Over at WWE.com each of the divas are shown wearing various NCAA team jerseys. Examples include WWE Diva Rosa Mendes in University of North Carolina's jersey and Lillian Garcia in University of Connecticut Huskies' attire.

John Cena as NHL Goalie

With WWE Superstar John Cena's movie "12 Rounds" coming to theaters next month, the promotional appearances are now in full swing. A recent advertisement for the NHL's Los Angeles Kings, features the WWE star Cena as a hockey goalie. Don't worry, Cena isn't leaving the WWE for the NHL just yet.

In the ad, Kings forward Matt Greene and defenseman Raitis Ivanans prepare for a game in the locker room, they are shocked when they also find John Cena in full goalie gear! Highlight clips from "12 Rounds" are mixed in with dialogue between former WWE champ Cena and the hockey players in a humorous video.

In an article called "The Great Escape" the Baltimore Sun's Childs Walker looks at how WWE has survived and thrived in the wake of the Chris Benoit tragedy a year ago. Lashley's site features everything that bodybuilders and gym rats might want. It includes protein powders, Glutamine, Creatine, Xenadrine along with many other popular supplements and products designed to aid people in their workouts or weight loss.

News on WWE's Clinton Obama Invite

The Clinton vs. Obama open invite by WWE for the Raw TV show has definitely started to generate buzz ahead of the special 3 hour Raw next week. Websites and news reporting sources such as CBS, TMZ.com and FOXNews have all jumped on the story now, giving the WWE just the sort of controversy and interest it has come to enjoy. But will either candidate show up, and either way, will it be enough to boost Raw's ratings for next Monday?

FoxNews questions what exactly WWE would expect the candidates to do in a wrestling ring. Also of interest is the fact that WWE claims it is actually in talks with the two candidates about getting them to appear on Raw. From Fox News:

What exactly the world of professional wrestling expects Clinton and Obama to do in that ring is unclear.

The announcer in the ad, now on the WWE Web site, declares, “Forget about who’s better prepared when the phone rings at 3 a.m., and find out who’s better when the bell rings.”

So what? An arm wrestling match? A very aggressive debate? A cage fighting tournament?

“I think the invitation itself is self-explanatory,” Davis said. “Get into the ring and resolve their differences.”

The professional wrestling sector has been relatively quiet on the political front ever since “Nature Boy” Ric Flair stopped tag teaming with Mike Huckabee. But Davis said all the while WWE has had an aggressive “SmackDown Your Vote” program to get young voters registered.

Davis said WWE is still in talks with both candidates over the proposed match.

CBSNews discusses the prospect of the match even occurring, based on a previous bowling challenge issued to Clinton & Obama. From CBS News:

The wrestling match would take place on the eve of the Pennsylvania primary, says the website. “The two presidential hopefuls may finally determine who is the strongest contender… not through formal copypoint driven speeches, but through the emotional discourse that can only be accomplished through bodyslams and headlocks,” says the website.

Clinton has already challenged Obama to a “bowl-off,” but given that both candidates lack what it takes on the lanes, perhaps a wrestling match may be a more even match? When asked if Clinton would entertain the idea, a Clinton spokesman joked, “I would typically use this occasion to reiterate our bowling challenge. But given how well that worked out (for both campaigns), I'm thinking sports challenges might not be the way to go here.”

Yet another smart move by World Wrestling Entertainment to garner attention admist a heated political battle over presidential candidacy. TMZ.com's A Headlock May Win the White House! basically says they've yet to hear a response from either Clinton or Obama, making them too scared to get into the ring. TMZ does add that it may become a handicap match should Hilary bring Bill along for the event.

IGN Talks to 2 WWE Divas

IGN.com's Matt Fowler recently attended the USA Upfront event which included stars from the USA Cable channel such as Debra Messing and Tony Shaloub (Monk). It also had two of the WWE's finest divas, Maria Kanellis and Candice Michelle. Fowler had a brief interview with the two Raw divas discussing everything from Candice's health to Maria's make out with Snoop at Wrestlemania 24.

An excerpt from IGN.com:

IGN TV: So Wrestlemania is a week in the past as of this point. How was it? What was your experience like?

Maria: Amazing. Just amazing. I mean you know it's going to be seventy thousand people, but then when you actually get out there you're like "oh my god. It's seventy thousand people." And then almost by the time I got to the ring I was hyperventilating because it was seventy five yards to the ring, and I thought "how am I going to do a match now?" But, all in all, amazing.

IGN TV: The entrance ramps get a bit long.

Maria: It was an amazing night. I kissed Snoop Dogg. Sure, I didn't win the match…

Candice: More like made out with Snoop Dogg.

IGN TV: Yeah, it was longer than a kiss. Sorry.

Maria: Yeah, okay. I made out with Snoop Dogg! So maybe next year I'll get the win and maybe it will be against…you. [looks at Candice]

Candice: Oh yeah?

Raw is Politics: Clinton vs. Obama

On the recent ECW on Sci-Fi there was an advertisement shown for a special Monday Night Raw, set to air 1 week from this coming Monday. The advertisement had a political theme to it, showcasing the recent democration battle to be presidential nominee. The contenders? Senators Hillary Clinton & Barack Obama. WWE has extended an official invitation for the two to settle their differences in the ring. Will the true politicians show up? Doubtful.

However, this may be a great campaign strategy. Should one of the two candidates show up in good fun, they may be appealing to the WWE fan base of voters, particularly younger voters. Obama has captured a lot of attention via Youtube music videos with celebrities, his fund raiser events hosted by Oprah and his general message of change for our nation. Hilary has made her fair share of appearances on various talks shows such as Ellen.

Most likely we will get what we saw on episodes of Raw last year. WWE set up a mock George Bush speech in the ring which was promptly interrupted by Cryme Tyme, who proceeded to take his wallet and cash. There was also the "Rosey vs. Trump" media frenzy, which WWE also mocked using celeb look-alikes. So expect to see some Clinton/Obama look-alikes hit the ring. Who knows which wrestlers will intervene in their debate, but it will be interesting. It may take place on Jericho's Highlight Reel, or just with a political setting in the ring complete with podiums for the "candidates". Don't expect it to go on without a fight and some hijinx though...

Update on Jim Ross' Health

WWE Raw commentator and analyst Jim Ross has been dealing with colon problems recently which sent him for a hospital visit. JR's latest blog entry included thoughts on his recent health situation as well as the gift Shawn Michaels gave to Ric Flair for his final match at Wrestlemania 24.

From JR's BarbBQ:

While in Orlando I started having colon problems again and began to lose a great deal of blood. But as the old saying goes, "the show must go on" and as I was once told, " a man can be sick at work just as easily as he can be sick at home" so I kept my issues to myself and went about the task of doing my job. This Friday I spent the majority of the day in the hospital here in Norman, the same hospital that removed 13" of my large intestines in 2005, along with a benign tumor off my colon. Friday was like a day at the beach compared that ordeal in 2005, as Friday I underwent a thoroughcolonoscopy and had 3-4 non-cancerous, thank God, polyps removed. I dodged another bullet. I told my friend Kevin Wilson, the offensive coordinator at OU, that I was blessed with "Sooner Magic" and after a couple of days of rest I plan to be on the airplane Sunday night headed to Albany, New York for Monday Night Raw. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

One of the telephone calls I received Friday afternoon was from Ric Flair who called to check on his pal and I assure you that call meant the world to me. It’s akin to OU Coach Bob Stoops calling me on a Saturday in 2005 when I was in intensive care, while the Sooners were preparing to play Kansas at Arrowhead Stadium. Great friends watch out for each other.

Rings- This years HOF class got beautiful rings at their induction ceremony. I am told that all the previous WWE Hall of Famers will also be receiving rings sometime in the future. My wife asked me if I was going to take off my 1974 Oklahoma National Championship ring to wear my WWE Hall of Fame ring and I answered her with "good question."

HBK bought matching Rolex President watches for Ric Flair and himself to commemorate their classic match at WM24. The inscription on the back of Ric’s says "To be the Man" and on the back ofHBK’s it says "You have to beat the Man." Plus the number "24" commemorating Wrestlemania 24 is inlaid on the face of the watch in diamonds. That’s a class act, friends and neighbors.

According to the above, JR should be present in his commentary role for WWE Raw. Wrestling Fans, keep JR in your thoughts and prayers as he recovers from this condition. In his blog entry he goes on to discuss the upcoming battle between Khali and Big Show, the new Rock DVD coming out and Raw in his hometown of Oklahoma City.

Wrestlemania Fireworks Burn Spectators

Despite being a huge success and record-breaking event, Wrestlemania 24 did not come without its issues. According to a Newsday report today, some of the fireworks used at Mania burned dozens of spectators at the show. The accident occurred near the end of Wrestlemania, when a cable near the southwest end of the stadium snapped. Fireworks were propelled right into the stands due to the mishap injuring almost 3 dozen people.

From Newsday.com:

Orlando fire department officials said 30 to 35 people were burned Sunday during WrestleMania XXIV at the Florida Citrus Bowl. Three were treated at Orlando Regional Medical Center.

Officials said the accident occurred near the end of the event after a cable that held fireworks on the southwest end of the stadium snapped, shooting rockets into the stands.

Fire Assistant Chief Greg Hoggatt said the guidewire "was stretched to the stage at the north end zone. The cable was to supply a route for fireworks to travel down. Somewhere in that period the cable failed."

Deer Park-based Zenith Pyrotechnology provided the fireworks for the event, which wrestling officials said almost 75,000 people attended.

WWE Tour Gives Fan Axxess

World Wrestling Entertainment's Fan Axxess Tour rolled through Miami on Saturday, March 22, which is its final stop before heading to the Wrestlemania site in Orlando this week. It's been a 10 city tour which has included former WWE legends such as Hillbilly Jim and Jimmy "The Mouth of the South" Hart. Curent WWE Diva from ECW, Layla has also been involved with the tour. Here's a snippet from Miami Herald's recent article on the event:

The first day in Miami brought legends Mouth of the South Jimmy Hart and Mean Gene Okerlund. The following day saw former Miami Heat dancer and current WWE diva Layla El return home to South Florida. El recently moved to Los Angeles for business opportunities and to enhance her skills in the ring under Jesse Hernandez at his School of Hard Knocks.

''I miss Miami every single day,'' said El, who celebrates her second year at Axxess. ``Even if it has been raining, this is great. I still consider Miami my home. That's when I had a day off, and I saw Fan Axxess was going to be here, I said, `I want to be there. I want to do this.'''

Along with superstar appearances each year, WWE, working with LeadDog Marketing Group, adds new activities to keep the tour exciting and fresh. One of the popular attractions is fans performing their own superstar entrances.

Participants are introduced with their choice of superstar theme music and are filmed walking into the ring. The entire experience is burned on a DVD as a WWE take-home prize.

Ric Flair's Key to Colombia, SC

Not only will Ric Flair be honored as a 2008 WWE Hall of Fame member, but he also will receive a key to the city of Columbia, SC this Monday. According to an article from WIStv.com, Ric Flair will be honored on Monday, March 24, as he is presented with a key to the city of Columbia, S.C. by the city's mayor. It comes as an honor to Flair and his contributions to the community. The day will also be proclaimed "Ric Flair Day".

From WISTV.com:

"Ric Flair is a legend with thousands of fans in the Columbia area. He is a great friend of Columbia, and he generates a lot of business within our city. We are proud to honor him," said Mayor Bob Coble in a written news release.

Flair will appear Monday night at the Colonial Center as part of the WWE's RAW. It's the last wrestling event in the WWE schedule before Flair is inducted into the WWE Wrestling Hall of Fame on March 29th.

"Columbia holds a special place in my heart - it is the home of many dear friends and business associates. I am honored to receive the key to this great city," said Flair.

The key to the city is bestowed upon distinguished persons and honored guests of the City of Columbia. The practice of presenting a key to an individual may be traced back to medieval times, when admission into a city was hampered by many legal restrictions, as well as by walls and locked gates.

So Flair will have yet another great achievement in a legendary wrestling career. The big question is whether all these recent achievements are a sign that Ric Flair will be continuing or retiring after Wrestlemania 24.

Wrestlemania XXIV Goes Virtual

A writeup on Adweek.com has a look at the WWE's invasion of a social world online called Habbo. The idea is to promote Wrestlemania XXIV more to "teens and tweens" through the virtual online world.

In the virtual Road to Wrestlemania, Habbo denizens will compete on behalf of their favorite WWE superstar in one of the five matches, including "The World Heavyweight Championship: Edge vs. The Undertaker" and "The Biggest Battles the Best," which pits WWE's Big Show against welterweight boxer Floyd Mayweather. The campaign launched on March 24 and runs for 11 days. The WWE first partnered with Habbo in January to promote its monthly Royal Rumble pay-per-view event.

Rochester noted that the company is looking for the most popular online sites in each country or region the WWE is eager to penetrate. "I don't want to assume that because we do a deal with Habbo or YouTube or Facebook that that brand is the best Web partner for [places like] India or China. We are trying to figure out that alphabet soup," he said.

St. Patrick's Day with Hornswoggle!

In honor of the St. Patrick's day holiday, it's a good time to reflect on the luck of the Irish in the WWE, including Finlay and his own flesh and blood, Hornswoggle. Wishing all the best to the WWE duo, especially Hornswoggle as he recovers from the brutal attacks of JBL just weeks ago.

For weeks prior to the attacks, WWE fans have been entertained by the antics of the smallest wrestler around, Hornswoggle. Larry King WWE Episode - Postponed

The CNN Larry King Live episode originally scheduled for Thursday, March 13th was postponed to a later date due to the recent news of New York Governor Elliot Spitzer's prostitution scandal. The CNN Larry King site provides the following blurb about the WWE episode, coming soon:

WWE Revenue at Record High

According to Andrea Adelson of the Orlando Sentinel, WWE Revenue is at a record high. World Wrestling Entertainment as a corporation made $485.7 million in revenue in 2007 which is up 90 million dollars from 2002. The article says even though the days of "The Rock" and "Stone Cold" have passed, WWE still does quite well financially with its fan base.

From Orlando Sentinel:

"You can't put out Desperate Housewives type popularity and have that hold consistently for 25 years straight," said Michael Weitz, WWE vice president of investor relations. "We went through a high around 2000, 2001 when we had stars like 'Stone Cold' Steve Austin and The Rock. That talent went out and we went through a low point, but since then we've been building.

"We're in a healthy state of growing and the early stages of an upswing. What makes us healthier than we've ever been is we've diversified into new areas. We came out of 2007 very strong."(SOURCE)

In terms of fans attending live events, 2 million fans attended live events in 2007. This number has remained flat for six years now. The Orlando Sentinel article also goes on to describe WWE's business plan and how it makes its money through live events, pay per views, merchandise sales and TV rights sales. WWE's money from live and televised events is down about 18 million dollars from 2002. If the WWE expands to places like China, it could definitely help fuel solid growth and increase revenue numbers. The article goes on to note that one way WWE can really increase growth is to make its website, WWE.com more profitable, a problem many companies face these days.

Maria Kanellis' Playboy Cover

On this past week's Monday Night Raw, Candice Michelle and Jerry Lawler were on hand to help WWE Diva Maria unveil her April 2008 Playboy cover. The Sun UK website now showcases Maria's Playboy for fans. Santino Marella couldn't get to the webmasters in time to prevent them from showing "his Maria". The UK site offers the following regarding WWE Diva Maria:
