Thoughts on Unforgiven

With the Unforgiven Pay Per View officially over, it did offer a few surprises. The first surprise was Beth Phoenix losing to Candice Michelle. The way the build up had been heading into this contest, it didn't appear like Candice had much of a shot. However, she proved to outlast her opponent with a surprise pin out of nowhere. Most fans will say the Women's title is meaningless and the matches aren't as important as the rest of the card, but nonetheless this was a bit of a surprise. It was looking like WWE wanted Beth to be the new dominant diva on Raw.

The second surprise is Batista emerging as World Heavyweight Champ. We probably should have seen this coming though. The last time around, Batista won the Pay Per View match because of a DQ on Khali. Khali had seemed to be an immovable force as champ. In the few weeks leading up to this, Batista seemed to be able to knock Khali down and around the ring more than before, making a dent in the champ. However, it also seemed like Mysterio was getting a very fast push after his return back at Summerslam. Hence my pick of Mysterio to win it. Congratulations to Batista, he makes sense as champ for Smackdown for marketing purposes, and I'm sure a lot of fans would rather not see Khali with the belt right now. As much as anyone may dislike Batista or his abilities, it's an improvement over Khali having the belt. It also makes sense because WWE would like to renew the Undertaker vs. Batista feud again, which was upended by Undertaker's injury.

Finally, its not necessarily surprising that John Cena kept his title, because it's just been the trend for a year now. Cena does not lose, unless it's like he lost tonight, keeping his belt. Everyone knows he's going to lose at some point, and it's tough to gauge right now (based on not knowing his acting/rapping schedule). I picked Orton to win this match, which he won, but he didn't win the title. A win is a win, but the question is when exactly will Orton dethrone Cena? Or are they leading us towards some sort of Cena vs. Orton vs Triple H, Triple threat match? It seems like the most likely wrestler to be next WWE champ after Cena is one of those two. This just gave Cena that year long title reign for the WWE history books.

Other than the above discussions, there wasn't any shocking outcomes at this Pay Per View. As for predictions, I went 6-2, since I incorrectly predicted Mysterio and Beth Phoenix to win. WWE Geek went 5-3 as he had Carlito, Khali and Beth Phoenix picked for their respective matches. Another interesting contest and Pay Per View, the WWE had a few surprises in this one.
