The WWE Injury Dilemma

Sam Stevens has a great article over at Bleacher Report called "Lose money, lose fans or lose careers?". The article discusses the WWE's struggles with injuries and the new suspension policy as it relates to keeping the roster full of title-worthy talent. It mentions the fact that 8 WWE, World Heavyweight or ECW champs have fallen due to injury (Edge, Undertaker, Booker T, John Cena, Shawn Michaels, Triple H, Bobby Lashley,Rey Mysterio), causing the title pictures and feuds to change drastically. The major point made in the article is to maybe give the guys a bit of a break from such a grueling schedule on the road doing constant house shows (which many fans seem to enjoy more than the TV shows).

From BleacherReport.com:

"It is understandable that Mr McMahon wants to make as much money as he possibly can from merchandise, and particularly ticket sales generated from meaningless house shows in Biloxi Mississippi or St Thomas in the Virgin Islands, and the dedication of the superstars to perform every night is admirable, but it might be time to cut down the workload a bit. Can you imagine NFL stars playing all year, 3 or 4 times a week? It is probably the equivalent of that sort of strain on the body.

McMahon is all about making money but he is also all about entertainment. What would he prefer, half a roster performing averagely in Biloxi, or a full roster performing brilliantly, at every PPV, fresh and selling out massive arenas, and huge PPV buy-rates?"

It is a bit of a dilemma for WWE, because they want to please the fans by providing as many shows possible to as many venues. However the keystone Pay Per View events that fans pay bigger money for have been hurt due to the injuries. Some may say the injuries are helping WWE though, as they make things even harder to predict. Injuries in sports are common and never predictable, but a lighter schedule would do some good to start cutting down on the problem. Check out the full article which discusses the WWE injuries and title picture as well as suspensions and more.
