WWE Looking to China


WWE is looking to broaden its horizons both culturally and globally. You may have seen the behind the scenes look at WWE's efforts in Shanghai during a recent Raw or Smackdown. WWE has set its sights on bringing WWE over to China, just as the NBA has brought basketball games over there. The star power of Houston Rockets basketball player Yao Ming definitely has helped broaden the reach of the NBA, and China should have no problem embracing wrestling, as their population idolizes bigtime action fighting stars like Jet Li and Jackie Chan.

The president of WWE Canada, Latin America and China sees China as fertile ground that kung fu and America's National Basketball Association have conveniently prepared for him.

China has a wrestling history that dates back about 5,000 years. But shuai jiao, as it's called, isn't much in fashion anymore and "entertainment wrestling doesn't show up on the radar at all.

DeMarco is unfazed.

"Kung fu is very big here in China and our programming is not very far off or different from the kung fu or the Shaolin monks," he said in an interview Sunday. "They tell a story, too -- a soap opera story, a Chinese soap opera. We're virtually the same thing.
