Smackdown's Edge vs. Batista Revisited
For Night of Champions we are getting all fresh title matches for the most part, excluding a HBK vs. Jericho rematch. As for the World Heavyweight title, we get a case of deja vu. After an attempt by Vickie Guerrero to end Batista's WWE career on Smackdown Friday night, Batista remains on the Smackdown roster, and in the title picture. While it's not really a fresh feud, it provides a bit of a time killer until the WWE draft (or Undertaker's return), when some new stars can head to Smackdown. We've seen the Batista vs. Edge feud many times, just as we've seen Batista vs. Taker and now Edge vs. Taker. To sum things up, Smackdown needs some new World Heavyweight contenders.
It's surprising that Big Show isn't in the World Heavyweight title picture, but instead he's fighting for ECW's title. Show is a big enough wrestler to claim any title he wants. While the ECW title isn't exactly a consolation prize, it just seems strange to put a behemoth like the Big Show into the picture there. That might lead people to believe CM Punk is heading to Smackdown soon. Even though he fights on the show regularly, he seems ready for 1 of the 2 bigger stages, Raw or Smackdown. A Punk vs. Edge feud may be what Smackdown needs.
Punk even reminded Edge last night he could cash in at any time, any place, even Edge's wedding. It seems Punk either needs to step into the picture on Smackdown, or go to Raw, turn heel and go for Triple H's WWE title. Otherwise Punk continues to diminish the power of the Money in the Bank contract, and the impact the MITB match has from Wrestlemania.
But overall, WWE will really need to shake things up with the June 23rd draft to try to freshen up the matches and title pictures. It's hard to say who will go where, but certain titles and stars seem synonymous with the shows. HHH, Jericho, Cena seem likely to stay on Raw. Edge, Batista, Matt Hardy seem likely to stick around for Smackdown. For now, until guys like Undertaker and Rey Mysterio return, Smackdown will definitely need to gather up some new star power to face Edge & La Familia.
Who do you think would work best to challenge Edge on Smackdown for his title? Feel free to leave comments below with your ideas..
