Classic Match #1: Ricky Steamboat vs. Randy Savage - Wrestlemania III
(Steamboat confronts the man who injured him, Randy Savage)
The venue for this #1 match of all time was the Pontiac Silverdome in Pontiac, Michigan on March 29, 1997. Wrestlemania III held two classic matches on the list, with match #3 being Hogan vs. Andre the Giant. In what is considered the greatest WWE match of all time (by AskMen.com), the Macho Man Randy Savage defended his Intercontinental title against Ricky the Dragon Steamboat. This feud had also built up for months and involved several battles between two WWE legends.
At the time, Macho Man was managed by the late great valet, Miss Elizabeth, who was in his corner for the match. Steamboat had George the Animal Steele in his corner, as George had a crush on Miss Elizabeth. The way this feud started months ago was when Macho Man and Steamboat were about to have a title match. Macho Man attacked Steamboat as he was greeting fans at ringside, and eventually knocked Steamboat over the crowd barrier. Savage delivered a vicious elbow shot which sent Steamboat's throat into the crowd barrier, injuring his larynx. The feud carried on for months and involved many bloody, brutal contests, but it all culminated in a Wrestlemania III major showdown!
The match itself lasted about 15 minutes, and saw a frustrated Savage attempt to use the ring bell as a weapon. George the Animal Steele stopped him by knocking Savage off the top rope. Savage continued his attack and went for a Scoop slam on Steamboat. However, Steamboat wisely reversed the move into a roll-up pinfall. Steamboat scored a pinfall victory and won the WWF Intercontinental title, making it the first time in Wrestlemania history the title changed hands!
