New ECW Champion, Jack Swagger
Tuesday night, January 13th, the "All-American American", Jack Swagger achieved his biggest victory yet in his young but promising career. Swagger went toe-to-toe with Matt Hardy for the ECW title, and with a little help from an exposed turnbuckle, was able to win the title, his first major title in WWE. Swagger not only won the title, but remains the hottest wrestler in all of WWE, as he's undefeated since his start on ECW. Swagger's beat the best ECW has offered so far, including Tommy Dreamer, Ricky Ortiz, Finlay, and now Matt Hardy.
A quick review of Swagger's wrestling resume reveals the success of this superstar who has risen fast. Swagger, first went by his real name of "Jake Hager", and has only been in pro-wrestling since 2006, as he started September of that year with Deep South Wrestling. He was eventually moved over to Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW), and then Florida Championship Wrestling (FCW). It was while Hager competed in FCW that he won its prestigious FCW World Heavyweight Championship, defeating current Raw superstar, Ted Dibiase, Jr. On March 22, 2008, Hager became undisputed heavyweight champion of FCW after defeating Heath Miller in New Jersey. As of August 2, 2008, Swagger was on a 62-0 undefeated pro-wrestling winning streak. His first loss came August 18, 2008 to none other than William Regal, in a Raw dark match. Swagger made his ECW debut September 9th, 2008 and never looked back. He first feuded with ECW original Tommy Dreamer, competing in several different style matches against him, and winning each. Afterwards, Swagger went head to head with Ricky Ortiz, another hot superstar who was undefeated. Swagger took the clean victory in a hard-fought match. In that match, Swagger became #1 Contender for Hardy's ECW title. And then last night, the face of ECW changed, as Swagger managed to tear the turnbuckle cover off as Matt Hardy powerbombed him. Swagger used this to his advantage later as he dropped Hardy face first into the exposed turnbuckle, then hit his trademark Gut Wrench Powerbomb to win the ECW title.
With Swagger as undefeated ECW champion, the question quickly comes up; Will any ECW superstar be able to defeat Swagger and stop his burning hot winning streak? Surely there is a line forming, and Matt Hardy is at the forefront ready for his rematch. But don't count out Ricky Ortiz, as well as Tommy Dreamer, who recently announced he plans to reclaim the ECW title prior to June, or he will officially retire. Until the day he's defeated, Jack will continue to have that Swagger in his step as he proudly wears the ECW title.
