ECW Recap 04.28.09

ECW Recap from New York, NY:

A highlight video was shown of the Jack Swagger-Christian ECW title match at Backlash. Towards the end of the match a frustrated Swatter took a turnbuckle cover off, but the ref went over to stop him. Meanwhile, Christian was recovering in the opposite cover, where he took the turnbuckle cover off. Swagger charged at him, Christian moved and made Swagger eat the corner, before hitting the Killswitch on him for the victory.

Christian was introduced as new ECW Champion and came to the ring showing off his new belt. Christian said it was the greatest day of his career, standing in MSG in front of all his peeps as a champion. Christian told Swagger to come on out and interrupt. Instead of Swagger, Tommy Dreamer emerged from backstage, dressed in a suit and tie. Dreamer shook Christian's hand and congratulated him, saying finally ECW has a worthy champ after 3 months. Dreamer then brought up his promise to win the ECW title one more time before his contract expired, but his time's running out. Dreamer said he has just 6 weeks until his contract expires. Dreamer said he wanted to challenge Christian for the title in the building that made him love wrestling. Christian said they could have the match tonight, but Jack Swagger came out to interrupt on the ramp.

From the top of the ramp, Swagger accused Christian of cheating in the title match, saying it wasn't fair. Swagger called Dreamer a joke, then said he has his rematch in 3 weeks at Judgment Day. Swagger said nobody else gets a title shot until he gets his rematch. Just then Tiffany's theme music came on, and Tiffany came to the ramp. Tiffany said Swagger will get his rematch at Judgment Day, but he's wrong about saying nobody else will get one before him. Tiffany made the Swagger-Christian match official.

Tyson Kidd was shown backstage with Natalya helping him get ready. Matt Striker said Finlay will face him next.

Finlay vs. Tyson Kidd

Kidd was accompanied to the ring by Natalya. Highlights were shown of Finlay and Hornswoggle defeating Kidd and Natalya on last week's WWE Superstars episode. Finlay came out without Hornswoggle who has now moved to Raw. Before the match, Josh Matthews announced that ECW will have a new start time next Tuesday of 10 PM EST.

Finlay applied a half Boston Crab in the match, and yanked him away from grabbing the ropes several times. Kidd escaped the hold but Finlay clotheslined him hard over the top rope out of the ring in front of Natalya. ECW came back from a commercial with Kidd in control in the ring. Kidd worked over Finlay's leg and knee, and then put him in an excruciating submission hold. Finlay tried to apply a chinlock, but Kidd escaped and put a new hold on Finlay's leg. Finlay flipped Kidd away at one point, but Kidd got a hold back on Finlay once again, yelled he'd break his leg.

Despite having a hurt leg, Finlay hobbled back and tried to mount some offense with clotheslines and close strike attacks. Finlay kept clotheslining Kidd down. At one point Finlay went to the outside. Kidd tried to baseball slide dropkick him, but Finlay pulled the apron cover up and Kidd slid into it. Finlay started beating on him in the apron cover. As Kidd finally got back in, Finlay went to get in as well. Natalya ran over and acted as if she were going to climb onto the apron. The ref began warning her and Finlay was distracted enough for Kidd to grab Finlay's shilaleigh and strike him in the leg. Kidd took the pinfall for the victory.

Winner: Tyson Kidd wins via pinfall over Finlay.

Vladimir Kozlov came onto the ramp dressed in a Russian military uniform complete with a new display on the graphics board behind him. Kozlov said nobody in the WWE or entire world can compete him. Kozlov said it won't be long until he achieves global domination, then yelled something out in Russian before heading backstage. Josh Matthews and Matt Striker introduced their new backstage interviewer Gregory Helms.

Gregory Helms interviewed Evan Bourne backstage. Bourne said things are happening quickly in ECW now after the draft and Backlash has brought a new champion. Bourne said he has championship aspirations just like Tommy Dreamer does. Just then, Paul Burchill and Katie Lea arrived to interrupt. Burchill told Bourne they have a rematch on this Thursday's episode of Superstars, and Bourne won't be as lucky to win like he did on last week's ECW.

Tommy Dreamer arrived to the ring for the ECW Title match.

Tommy Dreamer vs. Christian
ECW Championship Match

Striker claimed early on that the two competitors were feeling each other out. Christian gained an upperhand early on, and went for the Killswitch but Dreamer shoved him away. Dreamer tried for his DDT, with Christian escaping it. Dreamer hit a running Powerslam on Christian, but Christian just kicked out of the pinfall attempts. Christian slapped Dreamer hard in the face and Dreamer fell back as ECW went to break.

Tommy tried to whip Christian to the corner, but Christian reversed and threw Dreamer into the corner. Christian started working on Dreamer's left shoulder and arm. Christian connected on a missile dropkick off the corner but couldn't score a winning pinfall. Christian went to the other corner at one point, with Dreamer climbing up and suplexing him off. Dreamer went for a pin but Christian barely got an arm up. Dreamer went at Christian towards the ropes, taking him to the outside with a clothesline. Both men fell to the outside and the ref counted near 10, with both men barely getting back in. Dreamer started to attack again, with serious momentum.

Dreamer hit a reverse DDT after Christian countered a scoop slam. Christian hit a Sunset Flip with Dreamer reversing the pin and Christian reversing it back. Dreamer leveled Christian with a huge clothesline. Dreamer stuck Christian upside down in the corner to prepare for a running dropkick. Suddenly, Jack Swagger rushed into the ring and attacked Dreamer and Christian. Swagger beat on both men, before tossing Dreamer head first into Christian's gut in the corner. Dreamer then pulled Christian to the center of the ring where he hit a Gutwrench Powerbomb on him.

Winner: Ref stops the match for disqualification when Jack Swagger attacked Tommy Dreamer. Christian retains the ECW Championship.
