ESPN's E:60 on Vince's WWE

On Tuesday night, the ESPN journalist show "E:60" took a hard look at the World Wrestling Entertainment and its head honcho, Mr. Vincent Kennedy McMahon. In the piece entitled "Lord of the Ring". which was about 10 minutes or so in length, E60's reporter Jeremy Schapp sat down with Mr. McMahon and had a rather revealing interview. During their talk, the 63 year old Vince revealed how he really gambled with the first Wrestlemania, and said if it hadn't been a success he wouldn't be on ESPN right now discussing WWE's success. Vince also discussed his upbringing which was in a 8 foot square mobile home. He discussed having serious issues due to his stepfather who was intensely cruel to he and his mother, and Vince admitted he wished he had the chance to kill his stepfather for what he had done.

The E60 show didn't stop with Vince, it also had brief interview pieces from the likes of Bret "the Hitman Hart", Big Show, Hulk Hogan and John Cena. Hogan discussed how the WWE shows have really transformed into much more of a family event, whereas in the past they were more filled with cigar smoking and beer drinking fans who wanted to see blood. Stephanie McMahon the Executive VP of Development, talked about her tough task of managing her father, as well as where WWE gets its various writers from. ESPN was given unprecedented access to a WWE production meeting where they discussed various storylines for Wrestlemania 25. A Charleston reporter Mike Mooneyham, who has been following WWE and Vince McMahon for over 30 years also spoke. Mooneyham discussed how Vince really muscled out all other wrestling promoters, gobbled up the top wrestling talent, and formed the biggest wrestling empire in the world the WWE. He also spoke about an interesting concept for wrestlers: they have no 401k or health benefits, and act more like independent contractors. According to the reporter, they sign contracts waiving these benefits when they join the WWE.

The ESPN E60 show also dove into the always popular media topic with pro wrestling, the use of performance enhancing drugs such as steroids. Vince's own personal ordeal years ago with the steroid controversy and how it tainted his legacy somewhat was touched upon. ESPN asked Vince why WWE even needs a policy if the music and motion picture industries don't have them. Vince discussed the WWE's Wellness Policy and discussed the politics and double standard WWE has been held to. He said WWE superstars are highly visible in this field so they really are easy targets for the media. Hulk Hogan spoke towards the end of the show about how it seems Vince McMahon is always going, never missing a beat, never getting tired or breaking down. When asked about his legacy, Vince finished things off saying that he'll probably never die, and always be around somehow because that's his plan.
