WWE's Unified Tag Titles Situation

With the recent serious injury to Edge in the form of a torn achilles tendon, WWE will need to come up with something to do with the Unified Tag Team Titles. Currently, Chris Jericho is one half of the championship team which just won the titles in a surprise move one week ago at The Bash. It of course raises some questions about the sacrifice certain competitors make with their bodies. Edge, in addition to guys like Jeff Hardy, Evan Bourne, Rey Mysterio and CM Punk, is one of those guys who does plenty of high risk maneuvers. He was involved in the Ladder match at Extreme Rules versus Jeff, and has participated in countless other risky matches. The latest serious injury puts Edge out of action for months, and makes you wonder if maybe WWE should consider lightening his performance load, or at least the risk-level of this veteran superstar's matches.

All that said, the Unified tag team titles will need to be transferred. Kevin Eck of Baltimore Sun Ring Posts blog even suggested allowing Jericho to pick a new partner, such as Dolph Ziggler, which wouldn't be a bad idea at all. However, I doubt WWE has the smarts to do it, and instead I wouldn't be surprised to see one of those 6 tag team tournaments or battle royals to decide the belts, similarly to how they did with the World Heavyweight Title back when Edge lost it (and Khali won it for his one and only reign).

So who would the likely successors be? Choice number one has to be Legacy's Dibiase and Rhodes. I was shocked when they didn't receive the belts at The Bash, and Jericho/Edge did instead. Jericho and Edge winning was a definite swerve and played into Teddy Long having to make big moves to satisfy Vince McMahon during his Smackdown probation. Another team to consider beyond Legacy is The Hart Dynasty, over on Smackdown. I'm not a huge fan of this team, but they are a talented team and at this point someone needs to carry the belts. There's the other possibility some fans have mentioned; just have Jericho defend the belts solo, which could also make for one interesting scenario and storyline. It's quite ironic that within the past two Pay-Per-Views championships have been won and had to be vacated within a week or so. Let's hope this trend stops here, and both Edge and Batista have full, successful recoveries.
