Smackdown Recap 11.20.09
Smackdown recap from Philadelphia, PA:
Commentators Todd Grisham and Matt Striker kicked things off after the pyros exploded for Smackdown. They hyped up tonight's main event of Chris Jericho & Big Show vs. Undertaker & Kane. Also on the card, John Morrison defends the Intercontinental title in a 2 out of 3 Falls match against Dolph Ziggler.Matt Hardy vs. Batista
Batista and Matt Hardy opened things with a rematch from last week. Early on, this one went to the outside where Hardy got the advantage on The Animal. Coming back into the ring though, Matt was hit By Batista who took over. He threw Hardy face first into the turnbuckle, followed by a slam to the mat. Batista started using a chin-lock on Hardy early as well. Hardy got to his feet to hit a jawbreaker and escape. Hardy did his trademark elbow from the corner onto Batista's head, then went for Twist of Fate. Batista escaped and went for Batista Bomb which Matt escaped. Later still, Batista escaped a Side Effect by elbowing Hardy. Matt did a drop-toe hold on Batista near the corner, with Batista responding by dropping Matt face first into the corner. The Animal with the Spinebuster, followed by two more and finally the Batista Bomb to win it in under 5 minutes time.Winner: Batista wins via pinfall over Matt Hardy.
Grisham and Striker discussed the "Hold Harmless" agreement which Rey Mysterio signed last week during his contract signing with Batista. Video was shown of what happened during that segment with Batista calling Mysterio a coward, and Rey tossing the table on top of Batista.
Backstage, Josh Matthews found Batista and tried to ask him a question. Batista interrupted to say that Mysterio made three mistakes. First he cost him the title, second he signed the Hold harmless agreement, and third he embarassed Batista like nobody else has before. Batista said he'll embarass Mysterio at Survivor Series as payback.
A video piece was shown to highlight the history between Undertaker and Kane, with Striker talking up the main event afterwards.
Vickie Guerrero and Eric Escobar showed up backstage where Teddy Long was. Vickie got on Teddy's case for reuniting the Brothers of Destruction. Vickie also complained that Eric Escobar isn't being used enough on Smackdown. Vickie noted that must be why Long's still on probation with Vince. Long told Vickie & Escobar to leave his office, but just then Vince McMahon arrived. He shook Escobar's hand and told Teddy it was a dumb move to put Undertaker and Kane back together because it could ruin the Survivor Series main event. Vince then named Vickie as Smackdown consultant saying she could help Teddy get off probation. Vickie was ecstatic but Long was dejected over the news.
Drew McIntyre arrived out to the ring for the next match against Finlay.
Finlay vs. Drew McIntyre
Prior to the match they showed a video highlight piece featuring the feud between Finlay and Drew McIntyre. McIntyre got on the mic saying Finlay says he loves to fight but really just loves to whine. He called Finlay an old lady and told him to come out to fight.Early on, Finlay was able to use a double leg takedown to drop McIntyre to the mat. Drew escaped outside where Finlay went after him for more beating. The fight continued back in the ring. Finlay continued to kick away at McIntyre in the corner, then grabbed him by the hair. The ref pulled Fnlay away. McIntyre recovered and got in a cheapshot behind the ref's back as he nailed Finlay in the eye. McIntyre followed that with a double-arm DDT to win it in under 2 minutes time.
Winner: Drew McIntyre wins via pinfall over Finlay.
CM Punk was shown walking backstage on his way out to address the WWE Universe with a special message of survival.
CM Punk arrived to the ring which was set up with a table and three white buckets upside down on the table. Each bucket was marked with a red "X", and there was also a trash can. Punk began saying this would be an intervention. He asked fans to put their hand in the air, or at home put their hand on the TV set and admit their faults. Fans started booing so Punk started saying they're all in denial without substances to abuse their bodies. He promised to teach everyone how to survive. Under bucket 1, was a pack of generic cigarettes. Punk discussed the dangers briefly saying they might as well throw their lungs in the trash. He tossed the cigarettes in the nearby trash can.
Next up, under bucket 2 was a bottle of prescription meds. Punk chastised people for abusing them like candy, saying they don't know how to read the label "take as prescribed". He poured out the pills into the trash can. Finally, was bucket #3 which had a bottle of imported whiskey underneath. Punk taunted the fans asking how many want to see him take a chug off the alcohol now. The crowd cheered. After talking about how drinking is like pouring your life down the drain. Punk poured that out into the trash can. Suddenly, R-Truth's music hit to interrupt.
Truth came to the ring and told Punk he seems to think he's better than everyone. Truth said people get to make their own choices in life. Truth admitted he doesn't like Punk, then kicked the trash can into him and delivered a DDT. Truth followed up by dumping the contents of the trash can onto Punk.
Dolph Ziggler vs. John Morrison
Intercontinental Title match - 2 of 3 Falls
Ziggler had several early pinfall attempts but none that counted. Morrison hit a standing dropkick on Ziggler followed by a flying heel kick. Morrison had a near fall of his own, then dodged Ziggler's big boot attempt. Morrison tripped Ziggler down then went for Starship Pain. Ziggler moved and Morrison landed on his feet. With Ziggler outside, Morrison did a springboard to crash out onto him. Back in the ring, Morrison hit Starship Pain with Ziggler putting both knees up. Ziggler couldn't score a pinfall though and Morrison got the inside cradle for fall #1 in his favor. Smackdown went to commercial.Smackdown returned with the match in progress. Matt Striker noted that during the break, Ziggler worked on Morrison's back and ribs. Ziggler had a near fall. Morrison went to try to win it on a rollup pin, but Ziggler escaped then hit the Zig Zag to take fall #2.
Ziggler quickly kicked Morrison in the face for a two count. Ziggler continued to stay on the attack as he hit an elbowdrop right into Morrison's ribs. He started stretching JMo around the ringpost to further work the injury. Ziggler hit a face plant for a two count. Morrison came back with a DDT to counter Zig's suplex. Morrison hit Starship Pain and took the final pinfall.
Winner: John Morrison wins via 2 of 3 pinfalls over Dolph Ziggler to retain the Intercontinental Title.
Mickie James vs. Layla
Early on it was Mickie with shots to Layla's mug via her forearm, then a Thesz Press. Layla scored a dropkick on a seated Mickie on the mat moments later, but only got a two count from it. Mickie was able to convert a roll-up into a bridge pin to grab the win in about a minute's time.After losing, Layla grabbed the mic. Layla told Mickie to check out the Titantron before she starts celebrating too much. On the big screen they had a parody of "Old McDonald" where Michelle McCool called Mickie "Piggy James". She did an E-I-E-I-O song to go with it, complete with a Looney Tunes ending showing Mickie James as Porky Pig.
Winner: Mickie James wins via pinfall over Layla.
Rey Mysterio was shown walking backstage on his way to the next match versus Tyson Kidd.
Batista came to the ringside area to do commentary for Rey Mysterio vs. Tyson Kidd match.
Rey Mysterio vs. Tyson Kidd
Early in this one it was Tyson Kidd gaining control after tripping up Mysterio on the top rope area. He followed up by whipping Mysterio hard to the turnbuckle, then kicking him in the back for a near fall. Mysterio tried to comeback as he started kicking Kidd in the head. Tyson came back with a dropkick right in Rey's kisser. Kidd missed on his springboard elbow attempt. Kidd rolled through a Hurricanrana but Mysterio kicked him in the face. Rey with a two count pinfall. Rey finally got Kidd against the ropes for a 619, but Kidd escaped to the outside. Rey climbed on the top rope for a move, but Batista got up to interfere, shoving Kidd away. The ref quickly called for the bell for the DQ.After the match had ended, Rey jumped onto the announce table, then jumped to sit on Batista causing him to fall back in his chair. Batista tried to chase Rey around the ringside area but couldn't catch him. Batista got in the ring looking pretty upset.
Winner: Tyson Kidd wins due to disqualification against Rey Mysterio.
Jericho tried to tell Big Show he's not scared of Undertaker or Kane. Show argued that he thought he was, saying he knows what it takes to survive in the ring with Kane and Taker. Jericho said he does also. Show then added if it comes down to them in the Triple Threat match, he'll knock Jericho out. Show walked out and the lights went out leaving Jericho in the dark. After Jericho had a bit of a fit in the dark, Show switched the lights back on to show he was just proving Jericho's scared.
They aired the MSG highlight video reel with Jay-Z's "Empire State of Mind" as the theme music. Some parts from this past week's Raw were included in the footage.
Kane & Undertaker vs. Chris Jericho & Big Show
Early on, Kane began to attack Jericho, then Taker came in to punch on Jericho as well. Jericho managed to grab the ropes and made a tag to Big Show. Show went toe-to-toe with Taker, but Undertaker got the best of it when Show missed on a punch. Taker hit Show with several rights, then a big boot when Show charged at him. The Brothers were able to double clothesline Show over the top ropes to the outside. Jericho went over to check on his partner as Smackdown hit commercial break.Back from break, Taker was in control as he clotheslined Jericho down. Taker hit Old School next. The Brothers were a double boot and a near fall by Kane on Jericho. Kane prepared to chokeslam Jericho, but Show was in to spear Kane down. With Kane in the corner and Show legal, the ref got distracted while Jericho worked on Kane to beat him up. Show delivered a knee to Kane's face, then Jericho tagged in to continue the attack. Unfortunately on his Lionsault attempt he was caught by Kane's knees. Both guys tried to tag out with Show getting in, then catching Kane with a punch to the ribs. Show set up Kane on the top rope. Show went to the middle turnbuckle with Kane able to knock him down. From there, Kane hit his clothesline off the top and then made his tag to Taker. Jericho tagged in as well.
Taker got Snake Eyes in the corner on Jericho, then a running boot and a legdrop. Jericho kicked out at two. Taker went over to knock Show off the apron, then grabbed Jericho for a Chokeslam. Jericho countered for a near Walls of Jericho, but Taker reversed that into Hells Gate submission. Big Show was in to legdrop Undertaker. All four wrestlers began to fight on the outside. Show got tossed into the barricade and then near the announcers area. Undertaker and Kane prepared for a double chokeslam on Show near the announce table, but Jericho stopped it. Taker and Kane tossed Jericho into the ring. Kane hit the chokeslam on Jericho, but Big Show was able to pull Kane out of the ring, then clocked him with a right hand.
Taker grabbed Big Show around the throat on the apron, and then hit a Big Boot on Jericho as well. Show got in the ring where he chokeslammed Taker down. Show helped Jericho up, but Jericho delivered a Codebreaker on him. Jericho grabbed the World Heavyweight Title belt from ringside and took off with it. It appeared there was a countout of Jericho to give Taker & Kane the match.
Jericho stood up on the ramp with the World Title in hand while Kane and Taker were recovering back in the ring.
Winners: Undertaker and Kane won via countout when Chris Jericho ran off with the World Heavyweight Title.
