News & Views - Cena, NXT, MVP, WM26...
We've got the Wrestlemania 26 Pay-Per-View coming up in just under 4 days now. Seems like time has flown so far this year with the WWE doesn't it? The Hall of Fame ceremony will be airing on Saturday night at 11PM EST on USA, when the newest inductees including Ted Dibiase, Wendi Richter, Mad Dog Vachon and Stu Hart are inducted.
The WWE Superstars have been making the rounds on various talk shows and news programs to hype Wrestlemania 26. John Cena was on the Late Night with Jimmy Fallon show on NBC. Check it out at NBC Video Rewind. According to TMZ, Cena will also be playing a new role in the TV movie "Fred the Movie" based on YouTube sensation Fred Figglehorn.
Also on televison, CBS Evening News did a profile piece on Montell Vontavius Porter and how he works to motivate troubled teens. Chris Jericho was on the George Lopez show where he was interviewed and did a karaoke contest against actor (former wrestler too) David Arquette.
They've announced that the next episode of NXT on SyFy will be the "biggest yet". It will be the first Pro Poll to rank the rookies so far. Rookies will be judged on four criteria: wins/losses, strength of competition, work ethic, and the "IT" factor. According to the commentators, the pros won't be able to vote for their own rookies. WWE.com has listed out the win-loss records of each rookie as follows:
Heath Slater 4-0
Justin Gabriel 3-1
David Otunga 3-1
Darren Young 3-1
Wade Barrett 2-2
Skip Sheffield 0-3
Michael Tarver 0-3
Daniel Bryan 0-5
What's interesting about NXT is that they're holding this vote but the wins/losses don't total up to the same number for each wrestler. For example, Daniel Bryan has fought more matches than anyone else listed, while Sheffield and Tarver have just 3 matches. It'll be interesting to see how this shakes out.
The other criticism about NXT is that it obviously is making future superstars, and using pro's to give them a boost. However, if you watched the show at some points, the rookies arrive out to the theme music of the pro's, and it seems the live crowd is expecting the actual pro to come out as well. A bit of a letdown for the live crowds, and you could sort of notice them wondering "hey where's Christian?" at first the other night as Slater & Gabriel arrived to the ring to his music.
For Thursday's WWE Superstars, Cryme Tyme's JTG goes up against CM Punk while Punk's WM26 opponent Rey Mysterio takes on Tyson Kidd of Hart Dynasty. Smackdown will feature a ten man tag match (5-on-5) featuring all of the competitors in the 2010 Wrestlemania 26 MITB match. Kofi Kingston was the tenth wrestler just added to the match.
The NBA's Phoenix Suns have a few WWE/Wrestlemania related items on their website including this interview with R-Truth and the following poll:
What WWE nickname would best suit these Suns players?
Amar'e the Giant
Captain Lou Amundson
Stone Cold Steve Nash
Grant Hitman Hill
Rowdy Robin Lopez
Jared JYD Dudley
Currently, Stone Cold Steve Nash is in the lead with 50% of the vote as of this post.
