Smackdown Recap 03.19.10

Smackdown recap from Los Angeles, CA:

Smackdown opened with commentators Matt Striker and Todd Grisham on camera talking about how they're still in shock over the public humiliation Rey Mysterio experienced last week from CM Punk. They replayed footage from last Friday's Smackdown when Rey brought his family to the ring.

It was Mysterio's daughter's 9th birthday and he had the crowd singing Happy Birthday for her. CM Punk and Straightedge Society came out to interrupt and finished the song in an evil tone. He challenged Rey to a Wrestlemania match, then continuously taunted him and insulted him in front of his family. Punk challenged Rey to a match right then and there. Mysterio got his family out of harm's way up the ramp. Later in the show he rushed down to attack Punk for what happened.

Rey Mysterio made his way out from backstage to start off the show. Mysterio discussed how his past week hasn't been peaceful, because of what CM Punk did with his family in the ring. Mysterio said Punk crossed a line he should have never crossed. Rey said he accepts the Wrestlemania match challenge from Punk, but it won't just be any match, it will be a Street Fight. Mysterio said Punk needs to learn a lesson to never mess with another man's family. That brought out Punk, Serena and Gallows from backstage.

Punk said Rey's a bit emotional tonight over what the WWE Universe and his family must be thinking. Rey snapped at him, and Punk said anger or rage is no way to solve his problems. Rey told Punk he needs to be human to understand what he feels inside right now. Mysterio called Punk a monster, then spoke Spanish at him. Punk had a photograph shown up on screen of Rey with his family in the ring and his daughter crying. Punk said Rey's son realized that he's more of a man than Mysterio will ever be. Punk told Rey he can save him if he accepts him as his savior.

Rey told Punk if he doesn't accept the WM26 Street Fight he's going to live his life fighting him daily. Punk said since he pities Rey he'll give him a chance for the match. Punk said if Rey can defeat Luke Gallows tonight, he'll get his Street Fight. Punk said if he loses tonight and goes on to lose at WM26, he'll have to join the Straightedge Society. Punk showed a photo again on screen to remind Rey of the humiliation. Rey said he'll have that image until the day he dies, but tonight he'll beat Luke Gallows like he's done before and he'll make sure Punk never forgets the beating he gets at Wrestlemania. Rey closed by saying "May God have mercy on your soul".

MVP & Matt Hardy vs. Jack Swagger & Dolph Ziggler

Smackdown held a bit of a preview tag team match involving four men from the WM26 MITB match.

Late in the match, MVP hit a Facebuster on Ziggler, and then the Ballin Elbow drop. Ziggler got and MVP prepped the Playmaker. Swagger came in to distract, but Hardy also rushed in to tackle Swagger out through the ropes. With MVP distracted, Dolph Ziggler hit the Zig Zag on him to capture the pinfall.

After the win, Ziggler watched Swagger go up the ramp backstage. Ziggler rushed over and pulled a ladder out from under the ring. He set it up inside, climbed up and sat up top after pulling the briefcase off the hook.

Winners: Jack Swagger & Dolph Ziggler win via pinfall over Matt Hardy & MVP.

They showed replays from last week's Highlight Reel where Jericho had Edge as his guest in the ring. In the end of the segment, Edge went for a Spear on Jericho, but Jericho clocked him with the World Championship belt.

Teddy Long had Drew McIntyre in his office backstage. He said he's impressed McIntyre is still undefeated thanks to Mr. McMahon expunging his two straight losses in MITB qualifying matches to Kane and Matt Hardy. Long said last week McIntyre finally qualified for MITB, but against a handpicked opponent from Mr. McMahon, a wrestler nobody's heard of and probably never will again. Long said McIntyre is still undefeated technically, until later tonight. Long said he was thinking about a match for tonight, and McIntyre will go one-on-one with The Undertaker.

Grisham and Striker looked at the 2010 inductees for the WWE Hall of Fame: Ted Dibiase, Gorgeous George, Mad Dog Vachon, Stu Hart, Wendi Richter and Antoni Inoki.

Michelle McCool and Layla were shown walking arm in arm backstage en route to the ring for the next match.

Tiffany & Beth Phoenix vs. Layla & Michelle McCool

Michelle McCool and Layla were wearing Glama-Man blue T-shirts to mock Beth Phoenix. Beth did an airplane spin on Layla early, causing Layla to become disoriented. Layla tried for a tag to Tiffany by mistake. Tiffany tagged in for a flying bodypress off the corner along with several other moves. Michelle McCool managed to get in a cheapshot outside the ring on Tiffany, allowing Layla to gain the advantage. McCool tagged in for further punishment on Tiffany.

In the closing moments, Beth Phoenix tagged in and was able to hit a slingshot suplex on McCool using the top rope. She bodypressed Layla up, but McCool ran over and kicked her in the gut. McCool went for the Faithbreaker, but Beth blocked it and was able to hit the Glam Slam for the victory.

As soon as the celebrating started, Vickie Guerrero came out with her "excuse me". She told Tiffany to head backstage, and that Beth owes her an apology. Vickie came to the ring and Beth said she already apologized to her in her office. Vickie said that's not good enough and asked for the apology in front of everyone. Beth apologized for putting her hands on a WWE authority figure. Vickie said Beth will regret ever putting her hands on her. Vickie said she's superior to Beth in more ways than she'll think of. So next week Beth will be in a one-on-one match against her.

Winners: Beth Phoenix & Tiffany win via pinfall over Layla & Michelle McCool.

Smackdown returned to show artist Kevin Rudolf in the audience. Rudolf's hit song "I Made It" is one of the official theme songs for Wrestlemania 26.

Cutting Edge hosted by Edge

They showed another replay from last week's Cutting Edge where Jericho took Edge down with a stool, then tried to throw him into the Jeritron monitor. Edge gained the upperhand and with Jericho down went for a Spear. Instead, Jericho clocked him with his championship belt.

Edge said tonight his special guest is his WM26 opponent, World Heavyweight Champion Chris Jericho. Jericho arrived to the ring along with his WWE NXT rookie Wade Barrett. Edge said it was good for Jericho to bring his NXT rookie and it looks like they're ready to go to the prom together. Edge told Jericho he's looking forward to Wrestlemania in their current chess battle, saying he'll get the last move and Jericho knows what that move will be. Jericho said Edge is making a mistake of boiling down their WM match to just one move. Jericho reminded him of the other factors: Jericho's best in the world and it's Wrestlemania, where Edge needs to live up to expectations. Jericho said most importantly, Edge might not be healed from his injury.

Jericho told Edge that David Beckham suffered an achilles injury like Edge and now his career is over. Jericho told Edge if he tears his achilles again at WM, his career's over too. Edge said there's a chance he's still injured, but nobody knows. Edge challenged Jericho to go for his next move now. Edge clocked Jericho down, and Wade Barrett went for Edge. Edge fought him off. Both guys tried to doubleteam Edge but he managed to fight back and send Jericho to the outside. Edge knocked Barrett towards the opposite corner, waited for him to stand then hit the Spear. Jericho snuck back in the ring though and got the last move, his Codebreaker. Jericho stomped on Edge's achilles area then said "Spear" in a loud whisper into the mic before leaving the ring.

Smackdown returned with Striker and Grisham reviewing a replay of just went down on The Cutting Edge with Jericho, Edge and Wade Barrett.

R-Truth & John Morrison vs. The Hart Dynasty

Truth and Morrison will be competing against ShowMiz for the Unified Tag Team championship at WM26. R-Truth came out after Morrison to perform his "What's Up" rap intro song.

In the late stages of the match, Kidd put a foot on Morrison's throat near the ropes where DH Smith was on the apron. Kidd continued to punish Morrison, but Morrison flipped over him to his feet on a move. As Morrison hit the rope, Truth tagged his back and came in to take Kidd down. Truth hit the Lie Detector to pin Kidd. Morrison wisely went out of the ring and grabbed DH Smith's leg on the apron so he couldn't get in to break up the pinfall.

Winners: R-Truth and John Morrison win via pinfall over The Hart Dynasty.

Rey Mysterio vs. Luke Gallows

If Mysterio wins this match, his Wrestlemania 26 match against CM Punk is a Street Fight. Gallows was accompanied to the ring with Serena and CM Punk. During the match, Gallows got into control midway through as he knocked Rey to the outside. The ref's count hit 8 with Punk yelling "stay down". Rey slid in just at 9 to beat the count, with Serena and Punk slamming their hands on the mat in frustration.

Later still, Gallows cinched a Bear Hug in on Mysterio to squeeze the life out of him. Mysterio punched back, but Gallows rammed him into a corner. He sat Rey on the corner and climbed up to superplex, but Rey blocked by holding the top rope, then punched Gallows off him. He hit a Hurricanrana off the corner, then a flying crossbody for the near fall. Gallows barely escaped a pinfall.

Gallows had a near fall of his own, but both men struggled to get up. Rey gained momentum his weight to bring Gallows down to the mat. He followed with a springboard double legdrop for the pin with Gallows kicking out again. Rey kicked Gallows against the middle rope and then hit 619. He set up for his Springboard splash to finish, but CM Punk slid in and out of the ring to distract the ref. Serena jumped onto the apron and tripped Rey on the top rope. Gallows secured a pinfall to win it. If Mysterio loses to CM Punk at Wrestlemania 26, he will be forced to join the Straightedge Society.

Punk celebrated with Gallows and Serena in the ring, looking at Punk. Rey ran over and jumped on Gallows to take him outside the ring. Mysterio continued to beat away on Gallows while Punk and Serena just sat on the apron just watching it. Punk and Serena slowly walked over as Matt Striker and the ref tried to plead with Rey to back off. He did for a bit then rushed back over to attack again. Punk and Serena just looked down at him. Punk slowly went down and held Gallows in his arms then shook his head at Mysterio.

Winner: Luke Gallows wins via pinfall over Rey Mysterio.

Striker and Grisham covered Wrestlemania 26's lineup of matches including Mysterio vs. Punk, Cena vs. Batista, Edge vs. Jericho, Bret Hart vs. Vince McMahon and Shawn Michaels vs. The Undertaker, Career vs Streak.

The Undertaker vs. Drew McIntyre

Right as the bell rang Undertaker went at McIntyre, but Drew slipped outside. Undertaker gave chase, with McIntyre going back in. As Taker tried to go in, Drew went for the elbow drop but missed it. From there Taker too control hitting his running clothesline and several other moves. McIntyre gained control though as he caught Undertaker on a Powerslam for a near fall. Drew made the mistake of arguing with the ref, as Taker sat right up and then attacked. He beat on Drew in the corner then tossed him out over the ropes.

Taker placed Drew on the apron for a leg drop, then got back in the ring to Chokeslam. He grabbed Drew by his throat and hit the Chokeslam. Next he signaled for the Tombstone Piledriver, hit it and collected a pinfall win.

Taker looked up at the Wrestlemania 26 banner, then exited the ring as the lights dimmed for his music. He headed up the ramp, stood still and looked back at the ring ready to do his one arm raise pose. Michaels came sneaking out from backstage and went for Sweet Chin Music. Taker avoided it and grabbed Michaels around the throat. Michaels jumped down on the other side of Taker as he went for the Chokeslam, then hit him with Sweet Chin Music to knock Taker onto the top of the ramp. Michaels got down and yelled in Taker's face for a bit, before standing up and doing a mock Undertaker one-arm-raised pose before a DX crotch chop.

Winner: The Undertaker wins via pinfall over Drew McIntyre.
