Smackdown Recap 03.05.10

Smackdown Recap from Wichita, KS:

A video was shown highlighting Edge and Chris Jericho's incidents from last week. Edge arrived to the ring to start off the show. Edge said he's concerned about his WM26 opponent, Jericho, because he keeps bragging he's the best in the business, but Jericho keeps getting "Speared". Edge said that will keep happening through Wrestlemania. The crowd started up the Spear chant as Edge kept repeating it. That brought out The Big Show, carrying his Unified tag team title belts.

Edge reminded Show how his tag partner ended up getting speared last week on Smackdown. Edge said that will happen to Show later tonight too. Show said he and The Miz are at Smackdown to see who they'll face at Wrestlemania 26 in the Unified tag team title match. Show said Edge was lucky to defeat Miz but tonight his luck runs out. Edge promised to win the World title at Mania, but also that Show will get speared tonight. Edge taunted Show a bit, causing Show to throw down his belts. Edge asked if he thought he was going to get a spear now. Show charged at Edge, but Edge ducked pulling the top rope down so Show toppled out of the ring.

Smackdown GM Teddy Long was in his office checking out the Shawn Michaels DVD when Drew McIntyre walked in. McIntyre told Teddy to set the record straight about last week's "supposed loss to Kane" on Smackdown. Long turned to face the camera and said by order of Mr. McMahon McIntyre's match with Kane last week was expunged from the record books, meaning McIntyre is still undefeated. Long then told him that he would get another Money in the Bank qualifying opportunity tonight, against Matt Hardy. Drew offered a handshake to Long, but Long looked at his hand, then walked off.

Matt Hardy vs. Drew McIntyre
Money in the Bank qualifying match

They showed highlights from last week where Kane kicked McIntyre hard in the face, then pinned him for the win. After the loss, Drew went crazy and slammed a fist on the commentator table. He went up to Striker and yelled in his face.

Matt Hardy arrived to the match with his WWE NXT rookie, Justin Gabriel. Highlights were shown of Gabriel winning his and Matt Hardy's recent WWE NXT tag match with a 450 splash on William Regal.

In the late stages of this MITB qualifying match, Hardy and McIntyre fought on the corner. Hardy shoved McIntyre off, then landed an elbow on the back of Drew's head. Hardy went for Twist of Fate, but Drew countered it to try his own finisher. Hardy countered the Futureshock DDT with a backdrop. Hardy went for Twist of Fate again, but this time McIntyre turned it into a pinfall. Hardy reversed the pinfall and secured it to punch his ticket to Wrestlemania 26. Striker said this is the first official loss of McIntyre's career.

After the match, McIntyre went crazy again outside the ring, tearing the cover off the commentator table. Drew got in Striker's face and told him he swears he will be at Wrestlemania.

Winner: Matt Hardy wins via pinfall over Drew McIntyre to qualify for the 2010 Money in the Bank ladder match.

Grisham noted that the field of competitors for 2010 MITB is now set: Shelton Benjamin, Dolph Ziggler, Matt Hardy, Christian, Kane, Jack Swagger and MVP.

Shelton Benjamin vs. Dolph Ziggler

Both men traded punches late in the match, with Shelton gaining the upperhand on several takedowns. He whipped Ziggler to the ropes, but got kicked as he ducked down. Shelton responded with a belly-to-back suplex for a pin, but Ziggler kicked out. Ziggler grabbed Shelton's trunks to send him into the turnbuckle, then jumped on his back for a sleeper hold. Shelton flipped him over with Ziggler landing on his feet. Ziggler went for the Zig Zag, but Shelton blocked it then catapulted Ziggler into the corner turnbuckle. He hit Paydirt soon after for the win.

Winner: Shelton Benjamin wins via pinfall over Dolph Ziggler.

Striker hyped up tonight's main event: Edge vs. Big Show for later on.

Jimmy Wang Yang vs. Ezekiel Jackson

ECW Champion Ezekiel Jackson debuted on Smackdown with a match against Jimmy Wang Yang. Jackson arrived to the ring without William Regal who is now with Raw. Jackson screamed at Yang early on, before picking him up on one shoulder. Yang dropped over and tried to pull down Jackson's legs for a pin. He ran at Jackson for a flying move then got shoved down out of the air. Jackson tossed Yang into the corner and beat away on him with punches and kicks. Jackson went for a big clothesline then got kicked by Yang several times. Yang had momentum with a flying kick in the corner. Yang jumped off the corner but Jackson caught him, then turned it into his one arm slam finisher for the win.

Winner: Ezekiel Jackson wins via pinfall over Jimmy Wang Yang.

Backstage, Rey Mysterio brought one of his action figures to his daughter. Former ECW GM Tiffany arrived into the dressing room and Mysterio welcomed her to Smackdown, then thanked her for watching his daughter tonight. Mysterio said he had to go to work in the ring now, then told his daughter to watch him on the flatscreen monitor, before leaving. Tiffany offered to help her open the new action figure she had received.

The Straightedge Society came out from backstage lead by CM Punk. Punk began a speech about how Mysterio is an improper role model for children. Punk walked down the ramp as he talked and went up to kids in the crowd wearing Mysterio masks. He said Mysterio is just your average neglectful parent like many in the audience tonight. Punk said they cheer Mysterio because they are all cowards just like Rey is. Punk said Mysterio won't approach him like a man, but instead he takes cheap shots, and cost him his chance at a third MITB win at Mania. In the ring, Punk said unprovoked that Rey attacked Gallows last week, which has put a weight on Gallows' shoulders for the past week. Punk said tonight Gallows needs to make Rey pay for his actions. Punk said Gallows will be fighting for an entire society tonight.

Rey Mysterio vs. Luke Gallows

John Morrison & R-Truth vs. Cryme Tyme vs. The Hart Dynasty
Triple Threat #1 Contender match for Tag titles

Morrison and Truth came to the ring first, with Truth doing the "Whats Up" rap theme. Striker and Grisham talked over footage of what happened on WWE NXT between David Otunga and R-Truth backstage after Otunga was tripped during a match by CM Punk. Otunga lost to Darren Young and accused Truth of not having his back. He shoved Truth in the ring, but Truth got in his face backstage. The two men had to be separated by several referees.

The Hart Dynasty arrived out next with Natalya, followed by Cryme Tyme. At one point in the match Kidd made a blind slap tag to JTG. JTG gave him a look then dropkicked him. Kidd retreated to the corner so Smith could tag in and take it to Morrison. Morrison was beaten up and rolling towards Cryme Tyme's corner, but wouldn't tag. He finally managed to get to Truth, after Smith got into it with Cryme Tyme.

In the closing moments. Morrison took Shad and Smith out over the top rope by jumping at them. Truth and Kidd were still in the ring. JTG grabbed Truth from behind in a chokehold, but Truth fought him off. Kidd set up and was able to land a dropkick from off the top rope. Truth managed to duck several moves from Kidd and came at him to hit the Lie Detector for the win.

After the match, Morrison pointed to the Wrestlemania banner and hugged Truth to congratulate him on his first trip to the big PPV. Both men showed off their dance moves including Morrison's spinning breakdance move on the mat to R-Truth's theme music.

Winners: John Morrison & R-Truth become the #1 Contenders for the Unified Tag Team titles and will face The Miz & Big Show at Wrestlemania 26.

Todd Grisham reminded fans that "I Made It" by Kevin Rudolf is one of the official Wrestlemania 26 theme songs.

Michelle McCool and Layla thanked Vickie for the great job she did last week. They re-enacted the way Vickie slapped "Piggy James" last week. Michelle and Layla presented Vickie with her own "Simply Flawless" shirt that matches Vickie's. Team LayCool then pretended to smell something foul as Beth Phoenix walked up. LayCool walked off, and Phoenix asked Vickie when she will get her shot at the Womens Title. Beth said she's the most dominant diva on Smackdown, but Vickie told her she's not. Beth Phoenix said Vickie better not cross her. Vickie said she's not intimidated and Beth better not cross her or she'll find out what happens, just like Mickie James did.

Grisham and Striker discussed Wrestlemania 26 matches including the newest matches: R-Truth & John Morrison vs. The MizShow for the Unified Tag Titles, and Bret Hart vs. Vince McMahon.

Edge vs. Big Show

Show combatted Edge's early strikes with a big headbutt to send him to the mat. Show began to choke Edge in the corner, then punched him in the gut. He followed by standing on Edge near the ropes. Edge rolled to the outside, then Show picked him up over the ropes. Edge countered him and yanked Show's neck against the top rope to snap him back. As Edge got back in the ring, it was more punishment for him though. Show taunted and beat on Edge even more asking if he had any more jokes. Show went outside to put Edge on a shoulder but Edge slid off and shoved Show into the ringpost. Show regained control moments later and used several moves including a submission hold to wear down Edge.

Show continued to dominate until he had Edge near the corner and went for the Splash off the corner. Edge rolled out of harm's way then got a boot up as Show ran at him in the corner. Show shoved Edge away on a DDT attempt, but then missed when he ran at Edge in the corner. Edge got a bulldog from the second rope followed by a near fall.

Late in the match, Show went for a Chokeslam, but Edge countered and DDT'd Show to the mat. Edge got to the corner with fans chanting for the spear. Once Show was up, Edge charged and tackled him down with the Spear. Edge collected the pinfall win.

Chris Jericho snuck into the ring while Edge was celebrating. He ran at him with the World title belt, but Edge ducked him then came back with the Spear. Jericho rolled out of the ring holding his ribs. Edge announced on the mic that Jericho was just hit by a "spear, spear, spear..." and the crowd continued chanting. The show closed with Jericho on the ramp holding his World title belt, while Edge pointed to the Wrestlemania XXVI banner.

Winner: Edge wins via pinfall over Big Show.
