Smackdown Recap 3.23.07


A recap of WWE Smackdown from Cleveland, Ohio, Friday 3/23/07 (Wrestlemania is just 9 days away!):

Smackdown kicked off with the arrival of WWE's Chairman, Vince McMahon, into the arena and ring. In ring, Vince spoke to the crowd about how fun it was on Monday Night Raw, sending a message to Donald Trump. Vince had them show footage of Umaga's dismantling of Eugene in a match, followed by the cutting of Eugene's hair off his head. Vince said this is nothing compared to what will happen to Trump at Wrestlemania. Vince said Trump will be mortified when Vince shaves his head, and that it will be like Vince is symbolically shaving everyone in the crowd's heads. Vince mentioned Stone Cold as guest referee to the cheering crowd. Vince said Austin will call this right down the middle, and that at the end of the match there will be a bald-headed billionaire. Vince said he also guaranteed he will beat Bobby Lashley on the next Monday Night RAW. Vince said he wants to have fun tonight and that Lashley should be in action tonight. Vince then introduced the crowd to Lashley's opponent for tonight, Mr. Kennedy, who strutted down the ramp and into the ring. Vince then said Lashley would have another opponent. Out came Randy Orton, who also walked down the ramp and into the ring. Orton took the mic and thanked Vince for the opportunity tonight. Just then, Mr. Kennedy snatched the mic from Orton and also thanked Vince for the opportunity. Vince grabbed the mic back and said that neither Orton nor Kennedy could beat Lashley in the matches they had separately vs him, so tonight they would team up in a handicap match. Vince then announced it would also be a Tables match.

Joey Mercury & Johnny Nitro vs Paul London & Brian Kendrick (WWE Tag Team Championship Match) - Kendrick & London originally won the titles from MNM and now would put them on the line prior to Wrestlemania 23. Looking on from ringside were Ashley & Melina, who would be facing off at Wrestlemania for the Women's title. Early on, London faced off with Mercury in a shoving match, until Nitro entered the ring to interfere. Kendrick came in to rescue his partner and cleared Nitro out of the ring. London and Kendrick doubleteamed Mercury with a double flying clothesline. MNM then gained the advantage after London missed a dropkick near the ropes. MNM began doubleteaming London, and then Mercury kept London neutralized on the mat with a hold around the waist. London with a reverse pin attempted, was pushed forward by Mercury off him but tagged in Kendrick. Kendrick entered with high-flying moves dropping both opponents in ring. Paul London entered the ring with a flying dropkick off the ropes, and then a pin attempt on Mercury. Nitro in to break things up. All 4 men in ring, with Kendrick and Nitro tumbling out of the ring to fight. Mercury then battled London on the top ropes, with London punching Mercury down to the mat. London about to jump off the ropes, but Melina ran over to grab his leg, holding him there. Ashley ran over and grabbed Melina and then slammed Melina's head onto the side apron. Melina fell to the ground outside the ring, as London flew off the top ropes with a bodypress onto Mercury. London with the 3 count pinfall victory to retain the tag titles.

Kristal backstage interviewed Kane. Kristal asked Kane how far he is willing to go after what he did to Daivari recently. Photos were shown of Daivari's brusied and scarred back from their recent encounter. Kane said he is prepared to go "All the way" in his match with The Great Khali at Wrestlemania 23. Kane then laughed maniacally, holding up the chain/hook weapon from his "See No Evil" movie, as Kristal ran off.

Jimmy Wang Yang vs. Chavo Guerrero - A non-title matchup between the resident redneck of Smackdown and Cruiserweight Champ, Chavo. Early on Jimmy flew off the ropes towards Chavo, who managed to dropkick him in the air. Chavo then with an attempted pin and an armlock hold on Wang down on the mat. Yang then able to get back up but Chavo dropkicked him down again for another attempted pin. Chavo pulling Yang's arms back down on the mat, but Yang got to his feet to try to gain momentum. Chavo then clotheslined Yang down again. Chavo with a suplex of Yang onto the top ropes of the ring. Yang gained momentum after escaping the corner, by running at Chavo and landing a scissor leg lock around Chavo's neck to take him down. Chavo tried to whip Yang into the corner, but Yang able to kick Chavo as he ran at him. Chavo with an attempted flip off the top ropes, but Yang able to reverse and score a pinfall victory. As Chavo exited the ring, Yang signalled the belt would soon be around his waist, pointing to Chavo with his title.

Tribute payed to Arnold Skaaland, the late, great WWE superstar. (1925-2007)

The trailer was shown for the new Stone Cold Steve Austin movie, "The Condemned", which is Rated R and opens April 23, 2007.

MVP came into the ring and grabbed the mic from the announcer. MVP told the crowd he had searched for a good world representative to face prior to facing the US Champion at Wrestlemania. MVP said he found the Lichtenstein Heavyweight Champion who came out in traditional garb including a beige vest, shorts and cap. In ring MVP offered a handshake to the champ, then clotheslined him down quick. After a barrage of moves, MVP able to quickly take out the Lichenstein champ. MVP then took the mic back and told Benoit he will lose the US title to Smackdown's franchise player. MVP said Benoit will make history being the first to lose their title to MVP. MVP said Benoit will then be featured in documentaries and highlight reels, and that when MVP gets into the Hall of Fame, it will be mentioned how it all started with the win over Benoit at Wrestlemania.

Backstage, Orton and Kennedy held a table between them discussing strategy for their handicapped tables match vs Lashley tonight.

Recap highlights shown for Battle of the Billionaires, as well as interviews with celebrities over who they believe will win. Tony Hawk, Jim Cramer, Ricki Lake, John Salley, Jewel, Jimme Johnson & K-Fed were all shown giving their thoughts on who would win or look better bald.

Bobby Lashley vs. Mr. Kennedy & Randy Orton (Handicapped Table Match) - The ECW Extreme Champ in a tough battle prior to his main event match with Mr. McMahon on Monday Night RAW. In order for Lashley to win, he would have to slam both Kennedy and Orton through a wood table. Early on, Lashley punched back and forth on both competitors. Hitting Orton into a corner and then slammed down Mr Kennedy. Orton able to run over and knock down Lashley. As the 2 tried to doubleteam clothesline Lashley off the ropes, Lashley kicked Kennedy and then grabbed Orton to throw him out of the ring. Lashley went to work on Kennedy 1 on 1 in the ring, assaulting Kennedy repeatedly. Kennedy able to battle back, with Orton still out of the ring. As Lashley went of the ropes, Orton able to grab Lashley's leg tripping him. Lashley then went outside the ring and took down Orton. Lashley back in ring, escaped a kick attempt by Kennedy and then dropped him down. Orton re-entered ring and the two competitors able to gain an advantage on lashley when he missed while running at them in the corner. Lashley injured his shoulder and the 2 competitors then began to repeatedly assault Lashley who was down on the mat. As the battle continued, Mr. McMahon walked down the ramp with a grin on his face. Randy Orton exited the ring and retrieved the table, then set it up near the corner of the ring. Orton went over and hit Lashley who tried to battle back from Kennedy. Orton placed Lashley on the table and ordered Kennedy to go up on the ropes and jump onto him. As Orton tired to hold Lashley down, Lashley punched Orton and then went to slam Kennedy down off the ropes. Orton able to prevent Lashley from slamming Kennedt off the ropes. As Orton fought Lashley more in the ring, Kennedy went outside the ringa nd grabbed another table. Kennedy propped the tabled up in the other corner of the ring. Lashley then began to go crazy, attacking both men from corner to corner with clotheslines and shoulder rams. Lashley put Orton up on his shoulders, but Kennedy ran over to kick him in the leg, knocking him down. Lashley able to regain control, as he grabbed Mr. Kennedy in a bear hug hold and slammed him against the table propped up in the one corner. As Kennedy sat stunned, Lashley then scooped up Orton and ran him over to slam him through the other set up table. Lashley victorious, overcoming the odds to defeat both competitors. Mr. McMahon back pedaled up the ramp looking at Lashley who celebrated in the ring.

Kristal backstage interviewed Batista. Footage shown from last week's Smackdown, where Undertaker faced Finlay in action with Batista at the commentator's table. Undertaker tossed Finlay into Batista outside the ring. Batista said he expects tonight he will get along just fine as Undertaker's partner, during the match.

Chris Benoit vs. Gregory Helms - a tune up match for Wrestlemania 23 for Chris Benoit, the US Champ. Early on Helms punching away at benoit in the corner of the ring as the ref warned him to back off. Benoit then with several chops to the stomach and chest of Helms, followed by a toss against the ropes and throwing Helms up over his head onto the mat. Benoit slammed Helms head into the corner and then began to kick away at the former cruiserweight champ. Benoit went to grab Helms who had rolled onto the side apron, but Helms then pulled Benoit down onto the ropes snapping him back. Helms then got back into the ring with the advantage. Helms able to knock Benoit out of the ring and then flew over the top ropes onto him, crashing down. Helms got back in the ring and as Benoit came back as well. Helms able to snap Benoit up with a catapult type move into the bottom rope. Helms with the advantage began to use various holds and attacks, until Benoit started to fight back. Helms then with a thumb to Benoit's eye to regain control. Helms went for a pin but only a 2 count, Benoit began to fight back and suplexed Helms back for a pin attempt. Benoit then able to land 3 German Suplexes on Helms. Helms lay flat on his back in the ring, as Benoit climbed the ropes and then landed a flying headbutt on Helms off the ropes. A stunned Helms stood up near the ropes, but Benoit stood up and was able to take Helms down into the Crossface Crippler. Helms tapped out, giving Benoit the submission victory.

The latest 2007 WWE Hall of Fame inductees were introduced, The Wild Samoans, who debuted in 1979 with their manager Captain Lou Albano. The tag team title holders are part of a great stable of Samoan wrestlers who have been part of WWE, including Rikishi and The Rock. Afa and Sika will join Dusty Rhodes, Nick Bockwinkel, Jerry Lawler, Mr. Fuji, and The Sheik at the Hall of Fame ceremony prior to Wrestlemania.

Backstage Kristal was in Teddy Long's office, Teddy told Kristal she's doing a great job on Smackdown. Teddy gave Kristal a single red rose as she lit up with a smile on her face and thanked him. Just then, JBL entered the office to talk to Teddy. Kristal left, as Teddy asked JBL what he wanted. JBL told Teddy he wants an exclusive interview next week on Smackdown. JBL said he would interview Batista and Undertaker both in the same ring at once. Teddy Long said that was a huge interview, but he liked it and granted JBL permission to do the interview next week.

Batista walking backstage en route to the ring for his tag match with Undertaker. Booker came out in front of Batista and told him he needed to discuss some things. Just then, Finlay came charging from behind and ambushed Batista, knocking him down. Booker and Finlay proceeded to continue kicking and hitting away at the champ who layed on the concrete. WWE officials finally able to clear them away, but the damage was done, as Batista lay injured on the ground.

King Booker & Finlay vs. Undertaker & Batista - A true test to see if Undertaker and Batista could coexist as tag partners prior to their monumental Wrestlemania matchup. Undertaker came down to the ring solo, as Batista seemed to be delayed backstage after being attacked by his opponents. Undertaker attempting to take on both men, went old school walking the ropes while holding Finlays arm. Taker then clotheslined Finlay down. As Booker entered, Taker able to clear him out, throwing him over the ropes. Taker then pulled Finlay out of the ring and tossed him into the steel steps. Finlay lay outside the ring as Smackdown went to commercial break.

Back from break, Taker had Finlay with his head on the side apron. Taker on the side apron about to do a leg drop on Finlay, but Booker ran over from across the ring to knock Taker out of the ring. Booker went outside after Taker and punched away at him, then tossed him back into the ring. King Booker then cornered Taker and assaulted him, followed by a kick to the head in the center of the ring. Tagging in Finlay, Finlay continued to attack the Deadman and tried for a pin. Finlay with a series of vicious punches in the corner of the ring and a clothesline. Finlay then backed Taker into the corner where Booker stood. Booker tagged back in and continued with even more attacks on Taker who tried to battle his way back. The 2 opponents continued to double team Taker, with Finlay ramming Taker into a corner then bringing him down to the mat. Finlay with a kick to Taker's spine, and then a submission hold to try to keep Taker down on the mat. Taker able to roll over on top of Finlay and started punching away at Finlay. As Booker entered to assist, Taker then backed Booker into a corner. Just then Finlay attacked Taker from behind, bringing him back down. Finlay picked up Taker and held him as Booker then entered and kicked Taker in the stomach. Booker went for a scisscor kick, but Taker ducked. Booker able to still clothesline Taker and tried for a pin. As Finlay got back into the match and tried to continue the assault, he whipped Taker against the ropes and went down to do a flip of Taker off him. Taker grabbed Finlay from off the ropes and DDT'd him down. Booker tried to enter again, but Taker able to throw both men into opposite corners. Taker then ran back and forth with a clothesline to each man. As Taker went after Booker, Finlay able to retrieve his shalalee and went at Taker. Taker grabbed Finlay by the neck for a chokeslam, but Booker prevented the move. Both men then grabbed Taker, and Finlay smashed the shalalee into Taker's midsection. As the ref rang the bell, awarding Taker the DQ victory, the two opponents began to viciously attack Taker in the ring.

Just then, Batista's music sounded and Batista ran down the ramp and slid into the ring to try to aid the Undertaker. Batista able to start attacking Booker and brought him down to the mat, punching away. Finlay then hit Batista from behind, but Taker able to grab Finlay. As Batista stood up he signaled for a Batista Bomb and grabbed Booker.. As Taker had Finlay up for the last ride, Batista then tossed Booker over into him, causing Booker and Finlay to both crash onto Taker. As the 3 men lay in the ring in a heap, Batista left the ring, having gained his revenge after what Taker did last week throwing Finlay into him.
