CNN: No Apology for John Cena
WWE.com has noted on its website that media powerhouse, CNN has refused to give an apology to WWE or John Cena for how he was portrayed on their recent report. Cena had an exclusive written interview on WWE.com last night in which he responded to how CNN edited his comments. Apparently, CNN had sent a statement just as ECW was airing, at 10PM EST Tuesday night.
The statement, from CNN's Director of Public Relations, Jennifer Dargan:
"CNN felt that Mr. Cena's statement in the interview:
"My answer to that question 'have you ever used steroids' is -- the only thing I can say -- I can't tell you that I haven't, but you'll never be able to prove that I have"
was a more expansive and complete answer -- and that's why we used it in the first run of the program. And we stand by that decision. But, we added the other quote on the Sunday replay where Mr. Cena first denied using steroids. We did this because of his complaint and the attention it received so that viewers could see how he said it both times."
It seems like a classless move on the part of CNN to not offer a simple apology. In journalism, you need to stick to the facts as best you can. Cena gave them his straightforward answer in their interview, and they spun it a different way, leaving his "Absolutely not" out of the initial piece. The initial report was probably seen by way more people than the re-airing which includes Cena's extra 5 second answer. CNN will damage their credentials and professional nature if they carry on this way. Don't expect to see too many candid interviews from Vince or Cena on CNN anytime soon.
