Cena's Return a True Surprise
The surprise return of John Cena to Sunday night's Rumble is truly what makes it great to be a WWE fan. I'm not speaking from the perspective of "Yes! John Cena is back!", but more from the idea that WWE has done it yet again by surprising us. Nobody saw this coming, there were no spoilers or rumor sites to spoil things for us. There was even a recent interview with Cena where he said he would not be wrestling at Wrestlemania. I think bigtime surprises of this nature always make for an exciting Pay Per View. It will aslo make the upcoming title chases and stories even more interesting.
It's going to be intriguing to see what happens in the next few weeks. We now have Cena awarded the WWE title shot at Wrestlemania. That means he will most likely wrestle Randy Orton or Jeff Hardy for the WWE title. Cena eliminated Triple H from the Rumble, so that may come into play as well. Not many people would object to Cena vs. Triple H at Wrestlemania. I think the one thing that most people will contend is Cena did not have to earn this surprise spot in the Rumble. Very interesting, considering that Vince McMahon made Triple H go through hell to get there. HHH after all is a former WWE champ, and has held the belt more recently than Cena (albeit a few hours). We also saw several other guys just "show up" for the Rumble match without qualifying, in CM Punk, Chavo Guerrero, Superfly Snuka, Roddy Piper and Elijah Burke. For consistency sake they could have announced these entrants on the WWE.com site. It's quite possible WWE was trying to secure a few names and couldn't do so in time (such as Big Show or other legends).
The World Heavyweight Title picture is going to be very interesting. We don't have a clear frontrunner right now as it seems like Undertaker is involved with fighting big men such as Snitsky, Big Daddy V and Mark Henry. Batista is also confusing as he isn't really making a challenge and isn't really in a feud at the moment. Nobody expects Mysterio to continue challenging Edge through Wrestlemania. Things will become more clear in the coming weeks as we have No Way Out in Februrary followed by Wrestlemania 24. There's been rumors that No Way Out will have an elimination chamber matchup. Many feel that Jeff Hardy will win this match and maybe become WWE champ. That would set up a Cena vs. Hardy match at Wrestlemania. It still leaves us without the #1 contender for the World Heavyweight title at Wrestlemania.
Things are going to get very interesting in the coming weeks. As JR would say "looks like business is about to pick up!"
