Smackdown Sets WM24 Stage
Last night's Smackdown served to do what the WWE shows will do from here on out; set the stage for Wrestlemania 24. Feuds were built up such as Edge vs. Undertaker, Kane vs. Khali and MVP vs. Batista. It still makes you wonder what WWE is planning to do with some of these guys. We know that Edge & Taker will be squaring off, but MVP is US Champion. Will his title go on the line against Batista at WM24? What will become of guys like Kane, Khali, Big Daddy V, MVP and Batista? Will they be in the Money in the Bank? Will WWE just make a huge tag team match or battle royal of leftover wrestlers? It seems interesting at this point, because you still have a number of fan favorite wrestlers with question marks for their Wrestlemania matches.
The best match of the night was easily Jimmy Wang Yang vs. Shelton Benjamin. They put on a great wrestling show with Yang's quick moves and Shelton's powerful win out of nowhere. It would have been great to see Yang get into the Money in the Bank match with his style of wrestling, but Shelton is just as deserving. Now we have half the field for that Money in the Bank match as well: HBK, Mr. Kennedy, Shelton Benjamin.
The Chuck Palumbo feud with Jamie Noble seems a bit unnecessary at this point. Maybe Palumbo should be rumbling with Kane about now because I don't think people will want another Khali vs. Kane match at Wrestlemania. The fans just don't seem into it and they've fought about 5 times now prior to Chuck losing it, mentally.
WWE Diva Maryse was also part of a brief backstage skit which was intriguing. For a while she had just been cutting promos about watching Smackdown. Now maybe she will be managing a new wrestler or even getting into the ring. It will be interesting to see how this develops for the blonde diva and Smackdown.
Big Show also came out to send a message to Floyd Mayweather as Show dismantled Rey Mysterio. Rey had just pulled off an amazing win with a hurt arm against Chavo Guerrero. Vickie Guerrero was hell bent on revenge and had Show come down to make sure Rey payed. Expect to see Rey back for WM24 and in the corner of Mayweather or maybe assisting him with the cheap shot win.
Edge also tried to set the tone for his World Heavyweight title defense at Mania. Not sure if other fans picked up on this but Edge claims he is undefeated at Wrestlemania just like Undertaker. Checking out the facts though, Edge lost in a Money in the Bank ladder match. While it wasn't singles competition, a loss is a loss.
As good ol' Jim Ross likes to say: "business is picking up", but we are still left wondering what else Wrestlemania 24 will have to offer.
