New Champs & New Feuds
Wrestlemania 24 is now a few days away allowing its aftermath time to set in for us all. We've been left with continued news/sports coverage of Floyd Mayweather taking on Big Show, and discussion of how he was payed $20 million for it. The rapper Snoop Dogg seems like a pro wrestler after his role in the event, but is not officially on any rosters. The Undertaker's streak continues, CM Punk is now Mr. Money in the Bank 2008, and Randy Orton surprised the world by successfully defending his WWE title.
Last night's Raw had a perfect opener with the theme music of Cena, then Triple H but neither guy showed up. Fans were thinking it was some early April Fool's joke or a technical screw up by WWE staff. However, it was set up so Orton could deliver his line "Expecting someone else?" Orton basically was sending the message that he is your WWE champ and nobody expected him to be holding the title after WM24. I'm not sure which of the two competitors will be his challenger next, as both Cena and Triple H should be wrestling for that opportunity. Cena vs. Triple H should have been the main event at Wrestlemania. Matt Hardy made another surprise entrance, when he snuck into the ring behind Orton and attacked. But later in the night, Orton won a match against Hardy with a surprise RKO. Orton is really solidifying his current title reign as a heel, and doing it with some clean wins.
Beyond that, you'd have to think that maybe Jeff Hardy was scheduled to win the MITB so he could again challenge Orton for the title. His role now is questionable, as CM Punk is your MITB winner. Punk took on Jericho last night, and when I first saw that match announced, I figured Punk was cashing in for the IC title. Rumors are already circulating that Punk's moving to Smackdown and will cash in for the World Heavyweight. I don't see him challenging Undertaker though, so it's even possible he goes after Orton, or *gasp* stays on ECW to challenge Kane.
That brings us to Kane, the new ECW champion. It's a great move for him to add another title to his career. Kane's been a fan favorite and mainstay, as well as a hardworker in WWE for a long time now. He deserves to hold a title, and now he has the top title on the Extreme brand. Kane definitely is a symbol of extreme as he's created havoc for years on his competitors in the ring.
On another note, it's a bit hard to understand why Flair's career should end with a loss. If anything he should have been involved in one last title match at Wrestlemania 24, won that title, then immediately retired, vacating the title. It would set up a tournament for the title. It's always best to go out on a win. Now we have the Shawn Michaels angle of the "guy who put Flair out of wrestling", and Batista seems to be looking his way. Regardless, the admiration and celebration given to Flair by his wrestling friends and co-workers was a memorable and emotional scene to witness.
