Raw Revelations: WWE's All-Stars in LA
The latest WWE Raw on 5/25/09 was of course a quick scramble for the WWE creative team and Chairman Vince McMahon. It was something they had to get together quickly and at times seemed extremely improvised. This was of course due to the fact that the NBA's Denver Nuggets displaced WWE from their arena on Monday, so Raw was forced to do its show in Los Angeles. WWE tickets are never really a tough sale, but it was surprising to see the arena so full on very short notice. At first one may have wondered if thousands of tickets were handed out promotionally. Nonetheless, the show kicked off with the whole mock confrontation between Vince and the Chicken Nugget, Denver sports owner E. Stanley Kroenke.
Vince's routine was definitely off in terms of how he demeanded the fake owner in the ring before shoving him down. Even the Los Angeles fans seemed to "oooh" at some of Vincent's comments towards the fake Kroenke. In particular Vince started making childish jokes about how the E stands for "Enos" and rhymes with a certain something, which Vince didn't actually say. There were also 3 really bad looking fake versions of Jack Nicholson, Lakers owner Jerry Buss and NBA Commissioner David Stern seated behind commentators Jim Ross and Jerry Lawler in the crowd. As an NBA fan, the resemblance of the fake Stern to the real one was non-existant. But it's the thought that counts. Still, Mr. McMahon may have done better if he just held a mock match and KO'd the owner, then pinned him. The point would have gotten across.
Something else you may have noticed was the tag match involving Kendrick and Festus versus Goldust and Hornswoggle. At one point in the match Kendrick slapped Festus in the face because he refused to tag in. I can't recall if the referee saw that go down, but he was right near Festus and stopped him from getting in the ring. In previous tag matches, guys have slapped each other on the chest or shoulder and even in the face for a legal tag. Possibly the ref didn't notice. Also, it was odd that Goldust's stuttering problem showed up out of nowhere when in past episodes he had clear conversations with Cody Rhodes and others backstage. The Hornswoggle-Goldust pairing is also interesting, possible tag champs?
In WWE Divas action, Kelly Kelly won due to disqualification of Maryse. I like the potential buildup of Kelly and wouldn't mind seeing her get another title shot. Unfortunately, it looks like Mickie James will be put into that role again, while Kelly would make a great representative for the Divas belt. The push would be perfect for another blond face diva. Other "divas" action saw a mixed tag match with Mickie James and Santino defeating Chavo and Beth Phoenix. Because of that win, Santino got to choose a stipulation for his sister Santina's Extreme Rules match against Vickie Guerrero. After several jokes, Santino said it'll be a Hog Pen match, and began making his pig squealing effects again. The crowd didn't seem to react to it much, but it'll make some possible fun filler at the Pay-Per-View where fans can see Vickie Guerrero with mud on her face.
The Miz continues to shine in his bigger heel role on Raw, this time insulting the Los Angeles fans and their NBA championship caliber Lakers. Miz revealed a Cleveland Cavs Lebron James jersey and let everyone know who the eventual champs will be. The crowd definitely gives some major heat to Miz, and it's good to see his stock rising. At some point you've gotta believe he will be facing a not so happy John Cena in the ring.
The final match of the night was all in good fun, with Batista's WWE All-Star team representing the good LA Lakers and Orton's team representing the evil Denver Nuggets. Even though Denver won back in Colorado, the WWE Lakers picked up the win for Raw and helped appease the WWE Universe.
