Raw Revelations: Dibiase vs. Orton
On the 7/6/09 episode of Raw from San Jose, CA, perhaps we saw a glimpse of the future. The special guest host for the show was Million Dollar Man Ted Dibiase and he definitely shook things up, making it an exciting show. To kick off the show he brought Legacy to the ring and then said he was going to showcase their talents. Dibiase booked Cody Rhodes to try to get revenge against Mark Henry for beating Randy Orton last week, and then made the big move. Million Dollar Man told his own son it was time to make a statement and scheduled him to face Legacy leader, Randy Orton, in a non-title bout.
The set-up there was well done and sets the stage for a future face turn by the younger Dibiase against Orton. Although his result was a loss in the match, he showed promise and has the ability to perhaps one day defeat Orton. Expect these two to be feuding not in the near future, but at some point. The whole theme of disrespect for their elders came into play in an interesting twist when we saw Dibiase slap his dad, saying he set him up to fail.
Chris Jericho and Edge showed up to fight on Raw. Some fans may have been surprised to see Edge seeming to move quite agilely after news of his recent torn achilles. However, this was a pre-taped show for Raw since they are currently on tour overseas. Million Dollar Man announced that Legacy gets a Unified tag team title shot at Night of Champions. But now we've got to wonder if it will be against Edge/Jericho or if another team will be inserted there.
Raw's two newly acquired divas debuted and Gail Kim took a surprise pinfall on Maryse. Is she going to be elevated to title contender after being misused on Smackdown since her WWE return months ago? Mickie James gets the title shot at Night of Champions, but Gail may have something to say...Maryse looked good as always, even in a loss.
Cena and Triple H didn't necessarily disappoint in their Night of Champions Tournament finals. The two traded all sorts of offense in an exciting match, but as usual it was a teaser for things to come. Legacy came in and interfered in an attempt to cause a double DQ. Randy Orton thought he had outsmarted everyone and that he wouldn't have a title defense at Night of Champions. Instead, Million Dollar Man came out and announced the Triple Threat match for the PPV. Well at least it's not just Orton vs. HHH again, however didn't we see this match a few years ago at Wrestlemania? Why not stick Jack Swagger & Mark Henry in the match and make it a scramble?
Speaking of Swagger, a feud with MVP seems to be on the horizon and this may be just what MVP needs to get the crowd more into him. Last night's VIP Lounge saw Swagger bring up MVP's criminal past and MVP explain how he's put it behind him and uses his starpower to influence kids to do the right thing. Great setup in the ring and their future fights could be just what Raw needs. A fresh new feud between two guys who haven't wrestled one another.
One thing I definitely noticed with last night's Raw was the lack of slapstick comedy. There was no Hornswoggle, Festus or Goldust. No bathroom or shower humor. Miz and Santino Marella weren't in the ring for 20 minutes to drop one-liners. It made for a nice format and maybe Million Dollar Man should become the permanent Raw GM after the batch of good decisions he made last night.
Quick reminder, ECW won't be airing Tuesday night but will be on Thursday on Sci-Fi at 7PM EST.
