Wrestlemania 23: The Aftermath
Wrestlemania 23 has come and gone, and Vince McMahon is now as bald as Daddy Warbucks. Undertaker remains 15-0 and becomes a champion again. And John Cena holds on to his title, still.
It appears many fans are upset over the fact that Shawn Michaels did not capture the title at Wrestlemania 23, but it seems to be a trend over the last several years in the WWE. There have been many Pay Per Views in the past where I really expected to see HBK emerge victorious. Such as that brutal elimination chamber match he barely lost. His recent battle with Cena and the outcome is yet another reminder that the WWE will push certain stars, most likely based on how the marketing department sees things. Triple H has seemed to shadow over Michaels for many years now. I confess, I am a Cena fan, but have also seen Shawn Michaels since his days as a Rocker, double-crossing partner Marty Jannetty to go solo, enlisting the services of ring valets like Sensational Sheri and Luna Vachon. I have witnessed him become champion over Bret Hart, and befriend and backstab the likes of Triple H and Diesel, and now John Cena. But it seems as of late, WWE has not wanted Shawn Michaels to be carrying its championship belt.
The WWE knows the formula for success and how to make money. It's important to remember that the fans do start young and the WWE wants to capture this. If the youngest of fans are rooting for John Cena, they are developing and appealing to these fans early, and these fans will grow up loving the WWE. HBK does have a wide fan base as well, and many may be young, but it could be possible that Cena has captured more of this base. The marketing departments and the merchandise sales figures may tell the full story, if Cena outsells HBK shirts or items. Cena also is becoming a "semi-bonafide" star in the tradition of The Rock, where he wrestles, does movies and commercials, and has his own rap album which sold many, many copies.
With the upcoming Fatal Fourway, it is tough to predict who's gonna take this one. If the WWE wants to continue to show the dominance of Cena he just might emerge victorious. But I see Orton and Edge probably neutralizing one another, starting a singles feud between the two, and allowing either HBK or Cena to be the victor. The question is will the Showstopper finally make history, again?
