A recap of Monday Night Raw, 4.9.02 from Bridgeport, CT:
RAW kicked off with Shane McMahon arriving to the ring to a mixture of crowd cheers and jeers. Shane told the crowd "McMahon" is one of the most powerful names recognized worldwide. Shane said recently when the McMahon name is mentioned he hears laughter due to Vince being shaved bald at Wrestlemania 23. Shane said tonight is all about the McMahon Dynasty and putting respect back in the McMahon name. Shane demanded Bobby Lashley come to the ring to talk. Lashley came out in a suit carrying his ECW title. Shane told Lashley he took the McMahon family's dignity at Wrestlemania, so tonight Shane would take the 1 thing which means the most to Lashley away. Shane said tonight Lashley would defend his title against Shane McMahon. Just then Umaga and manager Armando Estrada came down the ramp to the ring. Shane slid out of the ring and confronted Umaga and manager and told them to go back to the lockerroom, because he would handle this himself. Shane slapped Estrada in the face and stared nose to nose with Umaga. Eventually the 2 backed up the ramp, still staring down Shane who then returned to the ring. Shane told Lashley tonight he would get the beating of his life. Lashley told Shane he wanted to make the match interesting. Lashley said if Shane beats him, he wins the ECW title, but if Lashley wins, he gets to shave Shane bald. Shane told Lashley he was on and left the ring.
Mickie James & Candice Michelle vs. Victoria & Melina - The 4 Divas squared off after Mickie attacked Melina last week, knocking her out after a match on RAW. Candice started off vs Melina, until Melina taunted Mickie and Candice tagged her in. Mickie was able to gain the upperhand throwing Melina by her hair then dropkicking her, to tag in Candice. Candice was able to lock a submission hold on Melina, hanging over the ropes until Victoria ran over and kicked Candice in the stomach. Victoria and Melina able to doubleteam Candice and hang her in their corner, then Melina was able to run and jump on her. Melina able to do a "Bow andArrow" type submission move causing obvious pain to Candice. Melina kept Candice away from her side of the ring and Victoria went to flip over the ropes onto her but missed. Mickie then tagged in picked up the pace on Victoria with several quick attacks on her opponent. As Mickie had VIctoria ready for the pin, she saw Melina come in and got up to go attack her. This allowed Victoria to attack from behind. Melina then grabbed Mickie from behind and held her for Victoria to run at. Mickie able to escape the maneuver and punch Victoria as Candice got in the ring and kicked Melinadown. A Spike DDT by Mickie on Victoria gave her team the pinfall victory. Mickie and Candice win via 3 count pinfall.
Backstage Mick Foley seen walking with a young child, who Mick called "Honorary General Manager" for RAW tonight. Mick introduced the boy to the Highlanders and then DIVA Maria. Mick told the child to tell the fans what the best city in the world is and he said "right here in Bridgeport, Connecticut".
Ric Flair & Carlito (with Torrie Wilson) vs. Lance Cade & Trevor Murdoch - Carlito had the mic in ring and told Ric Flair he questioned Carlito's desire several weeks back, and it made Carlito angry, but its not every day he gets a wakeup call from a legend like Flair. Carlito had footage shown of "Ric Flair & The Four Horsemen" dvd by WWE, which included commentary and interview pieces from various wrestling superstars as well as highlights of Flair moments. Carlito told Flair if they win their match tonight they get to compete for the WWE tag team titles at Backlash. Cade/Murdoch arrived to ring as RAW went to commercial.
Back from break, Ric Flair was chopping away at Lance Cade until he clotheslined Flair down and tagged in Murdoch. Murdoch punched Flair in the face then yelled at the ref. Cade/Murdoch continued to work together on Flair, tagging in and out to doubleteam Flair. Murdoch tried to pin Flair until Carlito intervened. Murdoch then put a headlock on Flair, until Flair got to his feet and fought his way out of the opponent corner briefly. Flair able to avoid an elbow drop from both Murdoch and Cade and eventually able to tag Carlito in. Calriot then able to take it to both Cade and Murdoch with backflips, dropkicks and clotheslines. Carlito tried to pin Murdoch but Cade broke it up, then threw Flair out of the ring. Carlito then left alone to fend for himself against Cade/Murdoch in the ring, as the two were able to knock him out for a victory. Cade & Murdoch now receive the opportunity to compete for the WWE Tag title at Backlash. Flair tried to help Carlito up in the ring, but a frustrated Carlito pushed Flair away then stormed up the ramp.

Coach rushed into the backstage office of Shane McMahon and told Shane he was there to give him some guidance. Shane said that things would be done "his way" tonight to put respect back into the McMahon family name. Shane told Coach to leave the office and focus on his "day to day" duties.
Todd Grisham interviewed Shawn Michaels backstage about his #1 Contender's Match vs Randy Orton. HBK said nice guys dont finish first, which is where he wants to be. HBK said tonight it's about who wants it more. Randy Orton interrupted the interview and told HBK he already had his chance at Cena's title. Orton said his desire to win tonight's match is stronger than HBK will ever understand. HBK told Orton he was gonna "kick his teeth out of his face tonight". Orton said "we'll see about that" and left the interview.
Shawn Michaels vs Randy Orton (#1 Contender's Match for WWE Title) - Early on the 2 wrestlers grappled with each other, and Orton and Michaels then exchanged armlocks on each other. Orton got away with a hair pull on HBK to yank him down to the mat for a pin. Orton then managed to put HBK in another armlock from behind as the 2 stood in the ring. HBK again reversed until Orton elbowed HBK then clotheslined him down. HBK began bleeding from his eye, but managed to take Orton down to the mat and put a headlock on him. Orton able to escape then knock HBK down and hammer away at him. Orton with a kick to HBK's stomach then slammed HBK down. Orton attempted a double knee drop on HBK center of ring, but HBK moved. HBK recovered to get up then use a knee to the back of Orton's leg, causing an injury. Orton grabbed his left leg as Michael's continued to kick away at it. Michales kept Orton down the mat, trying to keep his leg isolated. As Orton got back up and managed to toss HBK into the corner, Edge came walking down the ramp to the ring. Orton began yelling for Edge to get out of there, as HBK then ran up to try to pin Orton. A failed pin and Orton knocked HBK back down. Orton yelled at Edge as RAW went to break.
Back from break with Edge still looking on from ringside. Orton and HBK collided center of ring causing both men to fall to the mat. Orton up to his feet first, managed to toss HBK to the ropes then elbow him, causing Michaels to land on the apron. Orton then used a DDT on Michaels, followed by 3 failed pin attempts by Orton. With both men on their feet in the ring, Michaels able to leapfrog Orton off the ropes and roll him up for a pin attempt. Both men battled each other with chops and punches back and forth, then orton tried to whip HBK to the ropes. As Orton lowered his head, HBK able to use a neckbreaker. Both men then layed flat on the ring mat as the ref counted them down. Both men got up and then Orton and Michaels exchanged more punches. Orton threw Michaels off the ropes, Michaels ducked then came back to try to clothesline Orton. Orton ducked causing HBK to clothesline the ref out of the ring. Despite the ref being down, HBK able to land a flying elbow off the top ropes onto a fallen Orton. HBK preparing for Sweet chin music, until Edge came to the apron to interfere. HBK went over to knock Edge out, but then Orton able to push HBK off the apron and fly out of the ring with him. Outside the ring, Orton RKO'd Michaels into the floor with Edge watching. Orton tossed HBK back into the ring, then confronted Edge. Edge went to swing at Orton, who ducked. Orton went to RKO Edge, but Edge shoved Orton away, as Orton turned, Edge managed to run at him and spear him down. Edge then tossed Orton into the ring and went to revive the ref outside the ring. As Edge pushed the ref back into the ring, another ref ran down to the match, just as HBK got to his feet. With Orton up, HBK superkicked Orton down, then fell backwards on top of Orton. The ref scored a pinfall then raised HBK's arm in victory. The other ref came over and raised Orton's arm, since HBK's shoulders were also down. Edge backed up the ramp saying he shouldbe #1 contender since they pinned each other. No clear winner for this match announced as RAW went to break.
Backstage Shane in his office as Orton ran into the office and demanded the #1 contender spot. Shane told Orton if he had a problem to take it up with Coach, because he has enough to worry about tonight.
Mick Foley seen with his honorary General Manager, Michael from Make a Wish, backstage. Mick introduced him to Val Venis, Super Crazy and Crime Tyme. Johnny Nitro walked up briefly and scoffed at the two then walked off. Coach came up to Mick and the boy and told them he would let Michael make simple decisions like who wears what trunks, etc. Mick told Coach that Michael needed to tell him something. The boy began to say something about Backlash, until Edge walked up and interrupted, telling Coach they needed to chat about what went down with the #1 contender match between HBK and Orton. Coach and Edge left the scene.
World's Greatest Tag Team vs. The Hardys (Tag Team Title match) - Haas started vs Matt Hardy, and the two went back and forth, until Matt could slam Haas to the corner and tag in Jeff. All four men got into the ring and Jeff prepared to jump from the ropes until Shelton ran up and hit him down. Matt Hardy then dropkicked Benjamin out of the ring, but Haas managed to take control over Jeff as the ref restored order and cleared the ring. Haas and Benjamin managed to doubleteam Jeff for a while, until Jeff was able to flip out of a leg hold by Benjamin. Matt Hardy tagged in and began to clothesline both opponents taking them down to the mat, then hitting a side effect on Shelton Benjamin. After Jeff knocked Haas off the side apron, Matt and Jeff worked together to hit a Twist of Fate followed by a Swanton Bomb on a fallen Shelton Benjamin. Jeff with the pinfall giving the Hardys the victory.

Cutting Edge Interview with John Cena - Edge with mic in hand told the crowd that both HBK and Orton lost in their #1 Contender Match. Edge said backstage Coach agreed that Edge should be the new #1 Contender for Cena's title. Edge was about to introduce Cena, until Randy Orton's music came on. An enraged Orton ran into the ring as Edge slid out of the ring. Orton yelled at Edge saying he also talked to Coach and Coach agreed that Orton should be the #1 contender. HBK then came out to the ring and took the mic and told Edge and Orton that he is the better man and at Backlash it should be a rematch between he and Cena for the title. Just then John Cena's music came on and the champ came down to the ring with his title in hand. Cena addressed how all 3 men were complaining about being #1 contender. Cena turned and spoke to each man seperately saying he was happy to accept their challenges. Coach then came out to the ramp, mic in hand and told Cena he doesn't make the decisions around there. Coach said Orton and Edge were the only 2 to seek out Coach and talk to him about the #1 contender spot, so at Backlash Cena will face Edge and Randy Orton in a 2 on 1 handicapped match, with whoever scores the pin walking out as champion. Just then Mick Foley came out to the ramp, mic in hand and told Coach that the decision isn't his to make. Mick said the honorary General Manager for the night, Michael Pena would get to make the final decision. Mick asked Michael to tell the fans what the new Backlash main event would be. Michael took the mic and told the audience that the new Backlash Main event would be a Fatal Fourway match for the title, with Cena, HBK, Orton and Edge all competing.
Bobby Lashley vs Shane McMahon (ECW Title vs. Hair Match) - A barbershop chair with haircutting items was set up outside the ring as both men came down for their match. As Lashley entered the ring through the ropes Shane ran at him and speared him outside of the ring. Lashley tried to pick up Shane and run him at the steel ringpost, but Shane escaped and pushed Lashley into it. With Lashely trying to get back in the ring, Shane dropkicked him out of the ring, then took the battle to him outside the ring. Shane rolled Lashley into the ring as the bell finally sounded. Shane attempted several pinfalls. Despite Shanes fast and furious attacks of Lashley, the ECW champ's pure strength was able to slam Shane backwards. As Shane was struggling to get to his feet, the ref came over to him. Shane got to his feet then punched out the ref. The bell then sounded after this disqualification. Lashley started to attack Shane, kicking and punching him corner of the ring, until Umaga, Estrada and Vince all came walking down the ramp to the ring. In ring, Lashley was overpowered by the Samoan Bulldozer. Lashley was put into the corner of the ring and Umaga ran at him, hitting Lashley with his hip. With Lashley knocked out, Vince handed a steel chair to Shane. Umaga brought Lashley to his feet as Shane smashed a steel chair across Lashley's head. Vince then came in the ring with the mic, as Shane and Umaga held a bloody Lashley. Vince yelled at Lashley that he humiliated him, and so at Backlash it would be a 3 on 1 handicap match with Lashley facing Umaga, Shane and Vince. Vince then ordered Umaga to continue the beatdown on Lashley. Vince continued to punch away at the face of Lashley as RAW went off the air.

With Lashley knocked out, Vince handed a steel chair to Shane. Umaga brought Lashley to his feet as Shane smashed a steel chair across Lashley's head. Vince then came in the ring with the mic, as Shane and Umaga held a bloody Lashley. Vince yelled at Lashley that he humiliated him, and so at Backlash it would be a 3 on 1 handicap match with Lashley facing Umaga, Shane and Vince. Vince then ordered Umaga to continue the beatdown on Lashley. Vince continued to punch away at the face of Lashley as RAW went off the air.
