Wrestling Shows Try to Heal

The News and Tribune has an article up discussing "a time for healing" in the wake of all the recent tragedies that have been engulfing us. These include the bridge collapse in Minnesota, the trapped miners in Utah, sports scandals all over and the recent WWE/pro wrestling pitfalls (specifically Benoit and policy issues). The article looks at the XCW Midwest wrestling show run by Mitch Ryder of Floyd County, Indiana. It was started as a fund raiser for a local police officer who was shot and injured. His partner was killed in the shooting. The article also asks about the comparisons between the local show and pro wrestling in general, such as WWE.

From news-tribune.net:

“That ugly side of the business has to be exposed, unfortunately,” said Rico Beatty, a New Albany resident who makes the ring announcements at Ryder’s shows. “It takes a tragic thing to make people pay attention, but this show isn’t that.”

Ryder makes a very clear distinction between his show and Vince McMahon’s World Wrestling Entertainment, which has come under fire for everything from racy storylines to lax drug policies, resulting in the deaths of an entire generation of young grapplers.

“The first obstacle is to convince people that I am not Vince McMahon and this is not WWE,” said Ryder, who was continually interrupted by fellow wrestlers telling him how much fun their kids were having. “This is a quality product and anyone who comes to the show would tell you they had a good time.”

A salute to the smaller organizations like this that are trying to entertain despite the tough times that entertainment, sports and the world in general face. Read the full article here, detailing Ryder's independent wrestling show.
