WWE Survivor Series History (1998-2007)

Yesterday, WWE Characters the Blog took a look at the first 11 historic Survivor Series Pay Per Views. Here's part 2 of the showcase of the November annual tradition for WWE, with a quick look at 1998 through 2007.

The 1998 Survivor Series was held at Kiel Center in St. Louis. The event was headlined by a tournament for the World Wrestling Federation Championship called Deadly Game, in which the Rock defeated Mankind in the final match to capture the Vacant WWE title. Also on the card, Undertaker defeated his brother Kane, and diva Sable won the WWE Women's title by pinning Jacqueline.

1999 Survivor Series
returned to Detroit and also featured the elimination matches. There was a normal 4 on 4 tag team match featuring divas Mae Young, The Fabulous Moolah, Tori and Debra who defeated Ivory, Luna, Jacqueline and Terri Runnels. Kurt Angle also made his on-air WWE debut at this event, defeating Shawn Stasiak in a match. Big Show managed to win a 4 on 1 handicap Survivor Series match when he defeated The Big Boss Man, Prince Albert, Mideon and Viscera. Later in the main event match, Show won the WWE title by defeating The Rock and Triple H in a Triple Threat matchup.

Survivor Series 2000, brought the event to the Ice Palace in Florida. There were two traditional elimination matches on the card. In a tag team version, The Dudley Boyz teamed up with The Hardy Boyz and defeated Edge and Christian and The Right to Censor (Bull Buchanan and The Goodfather). Also on the card, several titles were defended successfully such as the European title held by William Regal, the WWF title held by Kurt Angle and the WWE Women's title held by Ivory.

2001 Survivor Series was held in Greensboro, North Carolina and featured some intriguing matches. There was a six-pack challenge for the vacant WWE Woment's title which Trish Stratus took home. Test won an "Immunity Battle Royal" against several other wrestlers so that he wouldn't be fired for a year. And in the sole elimination match of the Pay Per View, Rock's "Team WWF" won over "Team Alliance". Rock's team was made up of Chris Jericho, The Undertaker, Kane, and Big Show. Team Alliance consisted of Steve Austin, Kurt Angle, Booker T, Rob Van Dam, and Shane McMahon, all products of WCW & ECW, with Austin as the captain. Rock was the last man in this match after he pinned Stone Cold Steve Austin.

In 2002, Survivor Series was back in New York's Madison Square Garden. At this event, several titles changed hands. Victoria won the WWE Women's belt after defeating Trish Stratus in a Hardcore Match. The Dudleys along with Jeff Hardy won an elimination "Tables Match" over Rosey and Jamal and their manager Rico. Eddie and Chavo Guerrero won the WWE Tag team titles in a triple threat tag team match. Big Show defeated Brock Lesnar to capture the WWE Championship. And in the main event, the "Elimination Chamber" was unveiled in which Shawn Michaels defeated Booker T, Rob Van Dam, Chris Jericho and Triple H to win the World Heavyweight Title.

Dallas, Texas was home of Survivor Series 2003. For the main elimination match of this PPV, Team Bischoff consisting of Randy Orton, Chris Jericho, Christian, Scott Steiner and Mark Henry defeated Team Austin. Austin's team included Shawn Michaels, RVD, the Dudley Boys and Booker T. Due to the team's loss, Stone Cold lost his position as Co-General Manager of the Raw show. Goldberg also retained the World Heavyweight Title by defeating Triple H at the event, and Mr. McMahon beat the Undertaker in a "Buried Alive Match" thanks to Kane's help.

2004 Survivor Series was held at the Gund Arena in Ohio. Team Angel defeated Team Guerrero in one of two elimination style matchups. Team Orton (Randy Orton, Chris Benoit, Chris Jericho, and Maven) defeated Team Triple H (Triple H, Edge, Batista, and Snitsky)in the second. Trish Stratus retained her Women's title by defeating Lita. JBL also defeated Booker T to retain the WWE title.

At Survivor Series 2005 in Detroit, the two major WWE brands faced off in a traditional elimination match. Team SmackDown (Batista, Rey Mysterio, John Bradshaw Layfield, Bobby Lashley and Randy Orton) (w/Bob Orton and Jillian Hall) defeated Team RAW consisting of Shawn Michaels, Kane, The Big Show, Carlito and Chris Masters. Orton was the sole survivor, winning the match for his team. Also during the event, John Cena defeated Kurt Angle to retain the WWE Championship, and Smackdown GM Theodore Long defeated Raw GM Eric Bischoff, with help from The Boogeyman.

In 2006, Survivor Series was held at the Wachovia Center in Philly. In an early 4 on 4 survivor series match at the show, Team WWE Legends consisting of Ric Flair, Sgt. Slaughter, Dusty Rhdoes and Ron Simmons defeated the 4 man Spirit Squad. Flair was the last man surviving for his team to win. Mickie James also defeated Lita for the Women's title and Mr. Kennedy defeated Undertaker in a First Blood Match. In the main event 5 on 5 Survivor Series match, Team Cena (John Cena, Kane, Bobby Lashley, Sabu and Rob Van Dam) defeated Team Big Show (The Big Show, Test, Montel Vontavious Porter, Finlay and Umaga). Cena and Lashley were the last two men, collecting the win for their team.

Survivor Series 2007 will mark the 21st annual event of its kind for WWE. It comes to us from Miami Florida's Airlines arena where the Miami Heat play. It has just one traditional Survivor Series match on the card, with Triple H's team of himself, Matt Hardy, Jeff Hardy, Kane and Rey Mysterio facing Umaga's team which includes Finlay, MVP, Big Daddy V and Mr. Kennedy. Also on the card is a "Hell in a Cell" Wrold Heavyweight title match between Undertaker and Batista, and a WWE Title match between Shawn Michaels and Randy Orton.
