Wrestling Poll: Save a Superstar!

Last week the WWE decided to give the proverbial axe to 6 of its wrestlers and 1 veteran referee.

Here's a look at the six wrestlers cut:

Big Daddy V - Also known as "Viscera" and "Mabel" from Men on a Mission. A former Hardcore champ who was most recently on the ECW's roster and at one time was a #1 contender for the ECW title.

Braden Walker - Newer star on ECW who was undefeated and part of Teddy Long's new talent initiative.

Domino - A member of the Smackdown roster and at one time one half of the tag team champs with Deuce and manager Cherry.

Nunzio - A one time Cruiserweight champion and member of the FBI (Full Blooded Italians). Nunzio was seen on all three rosters, Raw, ECW and Smackdown.

James Curtis - More of amateur wrestler losing to various superstars. Most recently seen on ECW's show.

Shannon Moore - The punk rocker who saw plenty of time on Smackdown and ECW as a singles wrestler, protege of Matt Hardy, and tag team partner with Jimmy Wang Yang competing for the titles.

So which of the above stars would you save? Vote today in the latest poll here at WWE Characters to decide which WWE superstar you would have kept with the company!

6 Superstars Cut & WWE Going PG

This past week on August 7th, recent ECW phenom Braden Walker was cut loose by WWE. Just one day after, six more superstars were released. The names included Nunzio, Big Daddy V, Shannon Moore, Domino, James Curtis and referee Nick Patrick. A few surprises in there, as Big Daddy V, Shannon Moore and Domino seemed like they could fill roles in some capacity. Big Daddy V aka "Viscera" or "Mable" was a former hardcore title holder, and 40 years old, making him one of the longtime vets of the WWE. Shannon Moore wrote on his Myspace page earlier that he and WWE were parting ways, so it might not be a huge shock. James Curtis and Nunzio served merely as wrestlers for others to beat up on, but Nunzio did have a cruiserweight title reign to his credit. Referee Nick Patrick had the longest tenure of all the names listed.

According to SLAM sports of Canada:

Of those released, Patrick had been the longest consecutively-serving member of the roster, having come over to WWE during the WCW/ECW InVasion. Patrick, known previously, as being the personal referee of the nWo during WCW's peak years, became a high-ranking member of the Fed's refereeing staff, at one point being named senior official of Smackdown. Though he would not be involved in angles as he had in WCW, which at one point included a match against Jericho, Patrick remained one of the most recognizable faces on WWE TV.

Shannon Moore was seen on Smackdown this past Friday night, and Braden Walker appeared on ECW last Tuesday, as did James Curtis. Big Daddy V hasn't been seen from for some time. Read more about the superstars let go: SLAM sports of Canada.

The other recent murmurs about WWE have been their plans to move programming to a "PG" rating level, meaning less of the stuff many fans have come to love. This may appease parents if it becomes more of a family program, but it's more likely to alienate the older demographics who can handle PG-13 and even NC-17 content.

WM 24 Man Battle Royal Participants

A reminder to fans that there will be a live streaming "Freeview" of the 24 Man Battle Royal at 6:30PM EST on the WWE.com website. This over the top rope match will leave one man victorious in the ring, earning him a shot at Chavo Guerrero's ECW title later during Wrestlemania.

Participants in WM 24 Man Battle Royal

    Brian Kendrick
    Chuck Palumbo
    Cody Rhodes
    Deuce
    Domino
    Elijah Burke
    Festus
    Great Khali
    Hacksaw Jim Duggan
    Hardcore Holly
    Jamie Noble
    Jesse
    Jimmy Wang Yang
    Kane
    Kofi Kingston
    Lance Cade
    Mark Henry
    Matt Striker
    Shannon Moore
    Snitsky
    The Miz
    Tommy Dreamer
    Trevor Murdoch
    Val Venis

You'll notice that Big Daddy V is not a participant even though he had been mentioned on WWE TV shows as one before. V's handler/manager, Matt Striker seems to have a spot in the match. Another guy absent is Santino Marella, who most likely will get a role in the Bunnymania match.

Many have speculated that Mark Henry really seems to be getting the push to win this battle royal. I have a feeling the ECW original Tommy Dreamer may get his "dream" come true with a Mania title match against Chavo.

Raw Rebound focused on the Big Show Floyd Mayweather weigh in. Show called down WWE superstars to surround the ring. Mayweather came to the ring with an entourage of about 8. After the weigh in was completed, Mayweather and Show were left alone in the ring. Show grabbed Mayweather, then picked him up to toss out of the ring. Mayweather landed on a pile of WWE wrestlers, then got up holding his arm as if hurt.

Joey Styles said earlier today Floyd Mayweather had his elbow taped at the WM24 press conference. Footage will be available on Smackdown this Friday.

Styles and Tazz ran down the various WM24 matches including the just announced 24 man Battle Royal to determine a challenger for Chavo Guerrero immediately after. Also shown were the World Heavyweight title match, WWE title Triple Threat and WWE Divas Bunnymania.

Backstage, diva Lena Yada interviewed CM Punk. Punk said he's got some things going for him tonight, especially the fact they are in his hometown of Chicago.

Maria Playboy signing at the Virgin music store in New York was shown. Fans waited for as long as 12 hours to get to meet the WWE Diva and get her autograph.

Festus vs. Elijah Burke

As the bell rang Festus went into "monster mode" and tried to attack Burke. Burke was ready though and drove Festus to the corner for some punches. Festus tried to whip him to the opposite corner and ran at him, but Burke moved. Burke continued to maintain control of Festus as he worked on his left arm. Festus was able to stand up then slam Burke to the mat. Burke tried to run at Festus off the ropes but received a boot to the face instead. Festus followed with a Flapjack face first slam of Burke to the mat.

At one point, V got up and stood on the back of Punk. V continued to dominate and tried to run at Punk in the corner. Punk moved away then tried for a bulldog. V wouldn't move. Punk tried to lift up V on his shoulders for the GTS but had no luck.

V went at Punk but Punk moved away from the ropes. V fell out of the ring to the floor. His handler Matt Striker ran over to try to revive him, but V couldn't beat the 10 count to return to the ring. Punk got the victory and a spot in WM24's Money in the Bank ladder match. As ECW was ending, Matt Striker attacked Punk from behind. Punk quickly recovered the grab Striker and hit him with the GTS. Floyd Mayweather's Big WWE Payout

According to various sources including Mlive.com, Floyd Mayweather will receive a gross payout of $20 million for his Wrestlemania XXIV appearance against Big Show. According to the site, that figure is more than just one or two of Mayweather's 39 professional boxing matches earned him.

From Mlive.com:

"For WWE to cough up that kind of money for this one-time event, with no commitment beyond March 30, is amazing," said Leonard Ellerbe, who worked for months negotiating the appearance with World Wrestling Entertainment. "It tells you all you need to know about the financial power of the WWE, that they could afford to pay Floyd Mayweather $20 million."

"It's a great achievement for us, but it's just indicative of where Floyd is as an entertainer," Ellerbe said. "Ric Flair ran up to Floyd, wanted to take a picture with Floyd, said he and his wife were Floyd's best fans. All these wrestlers wanted pictures with Floyd, Lindsey Lohan wanted a picture. All the celebrities that have been calling me since this was announced, Eddie Murphy, you name it, you wouldn't believe it.

So is Mayweather worth it? This match won't be the favorite on the card as it's already drawn criticism from WWE fans and analysts all over as more of a farce. It wasn't the originally planned concept WWE had, for just Big Show to face Mayweather one on one, as it was intended to be a tag match involving Rey Mysterio, MVP and possibly Oscar De La Hoya. WWE may have spent its money better on acquiring more celebrity names or former wrestlers, such as Hulk Hogan and The Rock to be a part of the huge spectacle.

Smackdown Preview 01.18.08

Tonight's Smackdown will kick off with an appearance from The Phenom, The Undertaker. Undertaker will most likely be calling out Matt Striker, Mark Henry and/or Big Daddy V to the ring after last week's assault. Clearly the Deadman will not be happy after last week's show. What will have have to say in the ring?

In another match, Finlay will get to take out his frustrations on The Great Khali. This comes after Monday Night Raw where Finlay confronted Vince McMahon. Finlay continues to remind Vince about "their deal" which is a mystery to many. What exactly is the deal, and how will Finlay do when competing against Great Khali?

In a tag team match, CM Punk will team up with Rey Mysterio to face Edge and Chavo Guerrero. Punk was attacked last week by Edge and clearly will have revenge on his mind. Rey is the #1 contender for the World Heavyweight Title and Chavo is #1 contender for CM's ECW title. It should make for a great mixed match of contenders and feuds!

Check out Smackdown Friday night at 8PM EST on the CW network.

Miz said he had forbidden her from going out with Mahoney, and since he owns her contract, he could fire her on the spot. Miz said since he's a nice guy, he's going to let her stay. but plans to make her life miserable week after week now.

Just then, John Morrison came down to the ring. Morrison told Miz neither of them want Big Daddy V to get voted in, but Miz needs to face reality that nobody will vote for him. Morrison then asked Kelly why she associates with The Miz when she could align herself with Morrison. Morrison told Kelly he can tell she's been wanting to spend a night in his Palace of Wisdom. Kelly slapped Morrison in the face, then Balls Mahoney ran down to the ring to attack. Miz and Morrison were able to doubleteam and knock Mahoney down. Once Mahoney was knocked out of the ring, Morrison tossed Miz out over the ropes, then started to pose. As Morrison continued to celebrate in the ring, CM Punk ran down to the ring, attacking Morrison and forcing him out.

Backstage, Miz ran up to John Morrison asking why he cheapshotted him. Morrison said Miz cheapshotted him last week and the two began yelling. Armando Estrada came up and said they better start getting along because they will team up to face CM Punk and Balls Mahoney in a tag match tonight. Estrada left and the two started to argue over strategy and who will be in charge.

Kane vs.Big Daddy V

Kane slapped V in the face then ran off the ropes to try to clothesline. V didn't budge and Kane tried to slap the chokeslam on him. V didn't move and then clotheslined Kane right down to the mat. V took control, standing on Kane, then bodyslamming him to the mat. V went at Kane in the corner where Kane escaped. Kane tried to do a jumping clothesline at V in the ring, but V grabbed him for the side slam. V was able to knock Kane out of the ring, then whipped him into the steel steps. V tossed Kane back in, and Kane started to fight back a bit as ECW went to break.

ECW returned with V on top of Kane down on the mat, holding him in a headlock. Kane was able to struggle and crawl over to grab the bottom rope. The ref broke the hold, but V pulled Kane to the center of the ring then splashed down on his back. V layed on top of Kane keeping a headlock applied. As Kane got to his feet he recovered and gave a couple uppercuts to V. V stumbled back to the corner and Kane clotheslined him hard twice. Kane climbed the corner ropes to jump at V and knocked him down finally with a chokeslam. As Kane was in control, Mark Henry appeared, getting into the ring. Kane started to beat up Henry in the corner with V already down. All of a sudden, Great Khali came walking down to the ring and also entered.

Joey Styles remarked the monsters kept coming and getting bigger. Kane turned to face Khali and Khali booted him down. Nunzio followed with a dropkick onto Burke then began to attack him in the corner.

With Nunzio climbing up on the ropes, Burke yanked him down causing him to hit head first into the turnbuckle area. Burke took control and began punishing Nunzio around the ring. With Nunzio down on the ropes, Burke ran from the opposite side then jumped onto Nunzio's back. Nunzio stood up briefly then fell to the mat swinging at nobody. Burke continued to beat up Nunzio, then slammed him in a corner of the ring. Burke ran at Nunzio, then stopped himself and exited the ring to attack Nunzio from the side of the ring. WWE Cyber Sunday Matches

Here's a look at the 3 title matches for Cyber Sunday, that you, the fan can vote on and influnence.

ECW Title Match:

CM Punk vs. Fans Choice: The Miz, Big Daddy V or John Morrison

World Heavyweight Match:
The Undertaker vs. Batista (Triple Threat) - Fans choose referee: JBL, Mick Foley or Stone Cold Steve Austin (Read more about the match)

WWE Title Match:
Randy Orton vs. Fans Choice: Jeff Hardy, Mr. Kennedy or Shawn Michaels

The above matches seem easy to predict in terms of who the choices will be. Most likely Punk will be facing John Morrison, Stone Cold will referee in the Batista match and Orton will face the returning Shawn Michaels.

In a previous entry we took a look at the fact that Shawn Michaels is getting a title shot so quick. Triple H should be amongst the choices, therefore WWE Characters vote went to Mr. Kennedy.

It's also curious why a name was left out of the ECW choices, Tommy Dreamer. Fans might vote for Dreamer over John Morrison and WWE knows that. The Ultra Wrestling Roundup even speculates that Morrison will recapture the title from Punk at Cyber Sunday. Fans, you can prevent this, simply vote for The Miz. Make history, the WWE won't let him hold the title. However, doing this just might put a temporary stop to the WWE's ECW title plan. Morrison will probably take the belt away from Punk at the ECW show or a future PPV, but it's worth a try to see if it can be postponed.
