Slammy Awards & Orton's Snub

The winners of the 2008 Slammy Awards provided very little in terms of surprises, unless you count the "Khali Kiss Cam" acceptance speech and after-party. WWE Diva Jillian Hall screeched out a tone-deafening version of the Titanic theme song as Mickie tried to get a kiss from Khali at the podium. The Fink, Hacksaw Jim Duggan, Kung Fu Naki and Sgt. Slaughter all came out to the ramp to join in the fun, waving their arms side to side with Ranjin Singh, as Jillian kept singing, Khali kissed Mickie, and Ron Simmons capped it off with his trademark "DAMN!". A good time was had by all...

There were some exciting matches in the show including the Kofi Kingston vs. Rey Mysterio match for the Intercontinental Championship Tournament. Mysterio won the match in surprise fashion setting up what could be another great match at Armageddon. According to Raw, both Mysterio and Punk are nursing their own injuries, and it's hard to tell if either was real. Punk seemed to really be limping on that leg in the ring for a good part of the match. One match we didn't get to see was Batista vs. Triple H. While this was disappointing the WWE dangled that one right over us like a teaser for what may come at Wrestlemania 25. Perhaps another Brand Superiority contest, this time involving Triple H vs. Batista?

Superstar of the Year went to Chris Jericho. That award was most likely spoiled earlier in the show when John Cena announced he was going to find Jericho and beat him down during Raw, to avenge last week's attack. It made perfect sense that Jericho would need to be involved in another segment to allow Cena the chance to attack. At first, the attack was interrupted, as Jericho escaped into the crowd, and Edge made his way to the ring for the main event match with cena. That match saw a frantic series of pinfall attempts, FU's, an STFU, and then a WTF as Jericho made his way back down the ramp to come after Cena. Cena took the opportunity to beat Jericho senseless around the arena. Meanwhile, Jeff Hardy & Triple H managed to get into the ring and the act, attacking Edge to promote their upcoming Triple Threat match.

And that brings us to Randy Orton, who made an excellent point about being snubbed for 2008 Superstar of the Year. Orton held onto the WWE title for 4 months of 2008. John Cena has barely held the title for a month, and held the tag team belts briefly with Batista earlier in the year. While Cena made a great return from injury to win the World Heavyweight belt, and a surprise return to win the 2008 Royal Rumble, he was defeated by Orton at Wrestlemania 24. Cena also lost to Batista before returning to win a title. Sorry Cena fans, it may look like WWE has some explaining to do. Batista and Jeff Hardy may also have been lackluster nominees. CM Punk made another point earlier how he has won the World Heavyweight title, tag titles and possibly the IC title. If Punk wins that IC title before 2008 closes, he may have been snubbed as well.

But we all know the basis of the wrestling business is promotion. The 3 hour special edition was set up not only to give out awards, but also to bring everyone from the PPV into the spotlight. Having Orton in the candidates and no John Cena would do little to pump up the big Cena vs. Jericho title match for this Sunday at Armageddon. And while Orton may have been snubbed for a Slammy, he won his match against HHH & Batista, and looks to be in prime position to take the runner-up prize of #1 Contender at the Armageddon Pay-Per-View.

I liked the episode it was fun and had its momments, but I thought the whole slammy winners and everything was a big set up and a gag mostly. Like Beth was in the ring when they announced her award and John Morison had a match right after he got his, there was no surprise in it at all but it was still fun.
