Raw Preview 01.26.09
Sunday night's Royal Rumble produced one final winner in the 30 Man Over-the-Top-Rope contest, and that was Raw's very own, Randy Orton. Orton managed to last almost 50 minutes after entering at #8, and with the help of fellow Legacy members Cody Rhodes and Ted Dibiase, Orton managed to hang around until the final participants were left. Legacy used several triple team attacks and in the end faced just one man, Smackdown's Triple H. The Game seemed to have their number as he was able to eliminate both Rhodes and Dibiase. However, Randy Orton was ready to seize the opportunity as he knocked Triple H out of the ring and possibly out of a headline match at Wrestlemania 25. Orton's win won't be without a good deal of controversy though. Last week on Raw the Legend Killer went on a rampage in the ring when he knocked down Chairman Vince McMahon and delivered a punt kick to his head. The scene was one of horror and anguish as Orton realized what he had done, while Stephanie cried over her father. What will be in store for Randy Orton as he returns to Raw as the Royal Rumble victor? Will Stephanie McMahon have a punishment in line for the Rumble winner?
Last night's Rumble also saw a title change hands which had seemed to be tightly held on Raw. The Glamazon Beth Phoenix was defeated in her Women's title defense against Melina. For weeks it seemed like Beth had Melina's number, but Melina had returned to form and was ready for this challenge. In their match, Melina managed to overcome the power and strength of Beth, using quickness and in-ring savvy. In the end, it was Melina grabbing a quick roll up pin, giving her another reign as WWE Women's Champion. Now that Melina holds the women's title, will Beth demand a rematch on Raw? Will Santino and new intern Rosa Mendes play a part in the rematch? Will Santino even show his face after achieving a new record for lasting just :01 second in the Rumble?
At the Royal Rumble, John Cena also put his World Heavyweight Title up for grabs as he faced tycoon and self-professed "wrestling God" JBL. JBL had the services of his personal employee, Shawn Michaels, who he guaranteed a lot of money and a spot in the Rumble should he help JBL win the title. With the referee knocked out, Cena was shocked as Shawn Michaels got into the ring and delivered Sweet Chin Music on JBL. But even more shocking was Michaels also hitting Cena with Sweet Chin Music, then placing JBL's arm on top of Cena. Cena managed to escape the pin attempt when another ref rushed in to make the count, and in the end it was Cena's FU which won the match to retain his title. Now with Shawn Michaels strangely at odds with his employer, what will come next from their working relationship? Will Cena have anything to say regarding last night's incident, or will his focus shift to Randy Orton and Legacy?
The Royal Rumble also saw several surprises such as the return of Rob Van Dam. Will RVD be returning to WWE, and if so will Raw be his brand of choice?
