WWE's Next Champions - 2010 edition

With the impending Royal Rumble in about 2 weeks or so, and Wrestlemania 26 around the corner, speculation can begin on who will have which titles heading into the event. Based on recent storylines and match setups on ECW, Smackdown and Raw, let's consider the possibilities and speculate a bit...

WWE Raw - WWE Title belongs to Sheamus right now. Randy Orton just earned a sneaky WWE title shot at the Rumble thanks to Legacy's help in a Fatal Fourway. It's rare to see two heels face off at a Pay-Per-View, unless Orton is going face. My first thought is that somehow, Cena and/or Kofi Kingston who were screwed out of the title shot Monday, will somehow get put into a Fatal Fourway with Orton/Sheamus at Royal Rumble. My next though, if it holds up as just Orton vs Sheamus, we'll see Orton possibly as WWE Champion come Wrestlemania, with the possibility that Ted Dibiase wins the Royal Rumble this year. That may be why Legacy gave the help to Orton 1)they don't want him in the Royal Rumble match so they can win, and 2) they want to face Orton at Wrestlemania 26 for the title. Smart move by Legacy. I don't expect Sheamus to be WWE Champion at Wrestlemania 26, unless WWE does a lot more to build up his heel status.

WWE Smackdown - World Heavyweight title belongs to The Undertaker, and he's held it for a surprisingly long reign. He's not competing as much as he did in the good ol' days, but it looks like he and Rey Mysterio will face off at the Rumble. With the challenge Shawn Michaels issued for a rematch with Undertaker, it seems unlikely Taker will be a title holder if he accepts HBK's rematch for WM26. That opens up the possibility that either Rey Mysterio or Batista will be your champ come Wrestlemania 26, so they can defend. My other thought is somehow Edge is going to factor into all of this, whether it means he and Jericho are competing at WM26, or Edge sneaks into this year's Royal Rumble. Would be a great surprise! For now, I foresee Rey Mysterio as the champion at WM26, because he's a huge crowd favorite.

ECW - Christian is your current ECW Champion, and another lengthy title holder. With the recent ECW Homecoming tournament and finale Battle Royal, Ezekiel Jackson has emerged as #1 Contender. He's being trained and groomed by William Regal, and I expect Jackson will probably win the title at the Rumble. However, there's the speculation that they are getting rid of the ECW name, with that the ECW title would somehow be retired, and possibly Christian needs to be the guy wearing it when that happens. Jackson will likely be holding that title after the Rumble, whatever it's been called.

The WWE Divas Championship will be decided as well and it seems way too obvious that Maryse will win that tournament. If not Maryse, Alicia Fox. I don't see Eve Torres advancing to the finals, so Maryse will be there. But will Maryse face Gail Kim, a face, or Alicia Fox a heel? That will be the interesting part. Maryse has been built up as the top heel contender prior to Melina's injury, so I expect she'll be our new WWE Divas Champion soon.

DX likely won't have the tag team titles at WM26, especially if Michaels is in a match with The Undertaker again. That opens up possibilites for a near team like The Hart Dynasty from Smackdown or Croft and Baretta from ECW to either be the champs or become champs at WM26. Perhaps they'll hold a fourway tag match or something. I think Drew McIntyre can hold the IC title until Wrestlemania 26, but not sure The Miz will do the same with the United States belt. He's being built up well though, so it may be time for his spotlight. Other US title contenders probably include MVP, Mark Henry, Primo, Carlito and Chris Masters right now.

So there's some food for thought on how the title situations should play out. And don't forget we have the popular "Money in the Bank ladder match" each year at Wrestlemania 26, and why not have Punk become a back to back to back champ for history's sake?
