RIP Macho Man Randy Savage, Age 58
Tragic news is in from the pro wrestling world today. Former WWF Champion, Macho Man Randy Savage, has been killed in a car accident earlier today. Macho Man, real name Randall Mario Poff, was just 58 years old at the time of his death.
Website Sky News HD reports that the car crash happened near Savage's home in Seminole, Florida this morning. Reportedly, he lost control of his 2009 Jeep Wrangler around 9:30 AM in the morning local time, leading to the crash. The report says he drove over a concrete central reservation into oncoming traffic lanes before crashing into a tree. Savage's wife, Barbara Poffo, was with him at the time but survived the crash.
A statement from WWE.com said the following about Poffo's life:
"WWE is saddened to learn of the passing of one of the greatest superstars of his time. Our sincerest condolences go out to his family and friends."
Macho Man worked with WWE from 1985 to 1993. Among his championship accomplishments, Savage won the WWF Championship twice, and the Intercontinental Championship once. He worked with WCW as well and won its World Heavyweight Championship four times. Savage was also 1987's King of the Ring winner as well. He did a brief stint with Total Nonstop Action (TNA) wrestling from 2004 to 2005.
It's with sadness that I report this news as Macho Man Randy Savage was one of my earlier favorites in the WWF. He's one of the reasons the early days of WWE took off and became so much more popular for generations to come. One of my favorite all-time matches involved Macho Man in a retirement match against Ultimate Warrior at a previous Wrestlemania. These were two of my favorites and they put on a great match early in WWF's heyday.
Deepest condolences go out to the friends, family and all fans of Macho Man Randy Savage. He is truly one of the big legends in pro wrestling and will be sorely missed.
