RAW Recap 4.23.07


A recap of Monday Night RAW 4.23.07 from London, England:

Shane McMahon arrived to the ring dressed to compete. Shane said Lashley would not be present tonight. Shane chastised Lashley for shaving his father bald and causing Umaga to lose the IC title. Footage was shown of Lashley interfering in the Umaga vs Santino Morella matchup. Shane said tonight a member from the crowd would have the ability to wrestle against him. Shane asked for a volunteer as the crowd went wild. Shane said it will be a NO DQ match. Shane said he scoured the UK to find the baddest man in the area. Shane introduced his opponent, Robbie Brookside, from Liverpool, England.

Robbie Brookside vs Shane McMahon (No DQ match) - The two locked up early with Shane locking a headlock on Robbie. Shane with several takedown moves then started to pummel the back of Robbie with elbow drops and knees. Shane got Robbie to the corner for more of a beatdown. With Robbie seated in the corner, Shane left the ring and grabbed a garbage can from under the ring. Shane placed the trash can right in front of the seated Brookside's face. Shane climbed the opposite side of the ring's turnbuckle, and then flew across the ring to dropkick the trash can into Robbie's face. With Robbie layed out in the corner of the ring, Shane grabbed a mic and told everyone that he forgot to say this is a 2 on 1 handicap match. Shane introduced Umaga who stormed down the ramp into the ring. Umaga began the beatdown on Robbie then left him seated in the corner. Umaga ran from the opposite corner smashing his hip into Robbie's head. Umaga grabbed Brookside and pulled him to center ring, then layed him down. Shane still in ring ordered Umaga to climb the turnbuckle. Umaga flew off the ropes with a body slam onto the fallen opponent. Shane grabbed the mic again and said he forgot to say its a 3 on 1 handicap match. Shane told the crowd to get on their feet for the Chairman of WWE, Vince McMahon. Vince strutted down to the ring with his hat on. Vince layed across the fallen Robbie Brookside to score the pinfall victory for his team. King announced Lashley will take on Umaga 1 on 1 on ECW tomorrow night on Sci Fi.

Matt Hardy vs. Trevor Murdoch - a matchup squaring off two of the opponents from this Sunday's Backlash tag title match. Murdoch backed Hardy to the corner early til the ref broke things up. Murdoch able to hammer Hardy down in the center of the ring. Hardy able to elbow Murdoch in the corner of the ring then climbed the turnbuckle. Murdoch pulled Matt's leg straight out, causing him to fall to the mat, hitting his head. Murdoch started to take the tape off his wrist to choke Hardy, but the ref pulled it away. Murroch with a sleeperhold on Matt. Matt able to gain advantage when he threw Murdoch to a corner, then clotheslined him down. Matt with the Side Effect, and a pin attempt, but only got the 2 count. Matt then did a leg drop off the corner, landing on the back of Murdoch's neck. Matt prepared for his finisher, but Lance Cade climbed the side apron. As Matt Hardy went over to punch Cade off, Murdoch snuck up behind Matt and was able to wrap himself around Hardy for a slam followed by a 3 count pinfall.

Maria vs. Melina - A non-title Diva matchup, with two of the WWE's hottest. It was announced Melina will face Mickie James at Backlash this Sunday to defend her title. Early on Melina tossed Maria to the mat, slamming her down head first. Melina rammed Maria to the corner and used a boot to Maria's chin. Maria then wrapped Maria in the ropes and wrapped her up in a strong chokehold. Maria flew off the ropes at one point to start attacking Melina. Maria had a brief burst of energetic takedowns on Melina, and until Melina caught her off the ropes and slammed her down for a pinfall victory. Melina wins a very quick match.

Carlito shown backstage preparing for a match with Great Khali. Ric Flair walked into wish him good luck but Carlito made a remark and walked out.

Carlito vs The Great Khali -Khali stood in the ring awaiting his next victim, Carlito to come to the ring. Carlito arrived without his valet, Torrie Wilson. Carlito tried to hammer away at Khali early and went off the ropes at Khali. Khali bumped Carlito down to the mat. Carlito rolled out of the ring to recompose himself. Carlito slid back into the ring under Khali's legs, then got up to start kicking at Khali's leg. Khali able to headbutt Carlito down, then picked him up for a slam. Carlito raked Khali's eyes to stun his opponent and escape. Carlito climbed the ropes then to fly at Khali, but Khali just pushed Carlito down mid-air. Khali picked up Carlito high with his 2 hands and slammed him down, then put 1 foot on Carlito for the 3 count victory. Ric Flair came down to the ring in a suit and tried to ask Carlito if he was ok. Carlito started yelling at Flair in Spanish, angrily. Flair backed away and rolled out of the ring still looking at Carlito.

Mick Foley backstage talked about his friend Michael Pena from Make a Wish Foundation, who announced the Fourway match for Backlash. Edge came up and hi-fived Foley, his former tag team partner. Edge said thanks to Michael Pena, he know will have to go through 3 people to win the WWE title. Edge said tonight he just needs to take care of Randy Orton, and then watch Shawn Michaels and Cena destroy each other in their rematch. Edge then left saying "Good book" to Foley.

Shawn Michaels walking backstage, walked up to the Champ, John Cena. Cena told Michaels he may be known as the Showstopper or Heartbreak Kid. Cena said but himself, he's just, John Cena, the champ. Cena held his title high up, as HBK walked off.

Shawn Michaels vs. John Cena -A great (and lengthy) rematch from Wrestlemania 23 which included about 4 commercial breaks. The two competitors traded trash talk, punches and isolated different injuries on each other. Cena kept his focus on the back of HBK, while HBK was able to injur Cena's left arm and continue the assault on it. Cena had more control and momentum in this match, able to land several fierce moves on HBK, including an F-U, which HBK kicked out of. Both men were able to toss each other out of the ring several times. At one point, HBK knocked Cena off the side apron into the announcer's table. HBK then left the ring and removed one part of the side metal steps. HBK brought Cena to the stairs for a piledriver. Cena countered the move and flipped HBK over his back, causing HBK to land on his back. Cena assaulted HBK who tried to get back to the ring, punching away at HBK on the announcer's table. Cena tossed Michaels back into the ring, then slid in after him to slap an STFU on Michaels. Michaels tried to restrain himself from tapping out. HBK able to turn to his side and slowly inch his way over to the ropes. HBK able to escape the hold by grabbing the bottom rope as the ref ordered Cena to break the hold.

HBK back up as Cena tried to do the F-U again. HBK escaped and was able to deliver a Superkick straight to Cena's face. Both men down, as HBK crawled over to Cena and put his arm over Cena. Cena was close enough to the ropes to grab the bottom rope and prevent the pinfall. As the two men got back to their feet and battled in the corner, Cena able to whip Michaels to the opposite corner. Michaels hit hard and flipped up into the corner but managed to flip back down off it to his feet. Cena went and held HBK up for the F-U. Cena performing the F-U but Michaels flipped off him to his feet and turned to deliver a 2nd dose of Sweet Chin Music to Cena. Cena knocked out cold as HBK fell onto Cena in the ring, giving him a pinfall victory. HBK with a hard fought victory over Cena in this match, which drained both competitors of much energy. Michaels picked up Cena's title which was laying next to the champ in the ring. HBK said something to Cena then stood up holding the title up for the crowd. HBK with several DX crotch chops as RAW went off the air. Backlash is sure to prove interesting with the 4 man battle between HBK, Cena, Orton and Edge for the WWE title!

Michaels vs. Cena - 56 Minutes. I don't think the word "lengthy" really does it justice. WAY too long for a 2-hour TV show.
