Smackdown Recap 5.18.07


Recap of 4.18.07 Baltimore, MD Smackdown

Matt Hardy vs. MVP- MVP targeted the lower back of Matt Hardy by tossing Matt to the ropes, then hitting him in the back with a forearm. MVP held Hardy down with a submission style move, but Hardy got to his feet and managed to toss MVP to the ropes to elbow him down. As Hardy started to gain momentum, MVP was able to knee Matt in the face, knocking him out the ring and Smackdown headed to commercial.

With Matt stunned in the ring corner, MVP ran at him and landed a strong kick to the face. After a failed pinfall attempt, Matt staggered back to his feet. MVP knocked him back down several times and tried for yet another pin. As MVP and Hardy got back to their feet, Matt was able to duck an MVP clothesline and land a Side Effect on MVP. Hardy went for the pin but only received the 2 count. Matt was still stunned from MVP's attacks but climbed the ropes to get an elbow off the ropes. Hardy tried for the pin but yet another 2 count in this match. With both men back to their feet, MVP was able to finally land his finisher and grab a pinfall victory. Michael Cole entered the ring to ask MVP about his matchup with Chris Benoit this Sunday for the US title. MVP said he will beat Chris Benoit twice this Sunday and be "ballin" as new United States Champ.

Exclusive footage of Undertaker - Michael Cole introduced footage as the Undertaker's soul leaving Smackdown. Footage shown from last week's Smackdown, following the Undertaker's beatdown at the hands of Edge & Mark Henry. Undertaker seen lying in the ring as a group of 8-10 hooded druids came down to the ring, and carried Taker's body up the ramp. Highlights were shown from Taker's beatdown by Mark Henry, then Edge taking away his title.

Deuce & Domino with Chavo Guerrero vs. Kendrick & London with Jimmy Wang Yang - Early on London used hishigh flying speed against Chavo. London and Kendrick with a series of moves and tagging each other in and out against Chavo, til he could get Deuce in. After a brief apperance from Wang Yang, Kendrick came back in and was able to start taking out his 3 opponents knocking them down both inside the ring and the outer apron. Kendrick lost momentum when he got slightly distracted, allowing the 3 foes to isolate him in their corner of the ring. Kendrick finally escaped by elbowing Deuce & Domino off the side apron, then catching Chavo with an elbow. Kendrick tagged Wang Yang back into the match, who then went at Chavo. Wang Yang climbed the corner ropes. London ran at Domino and knocked him off the side apron. With the ring cleared of Deuce, Domino and Kendrick, London, Jummy Wang Yang did a moonsault backflip onto Chavo to score a 3 count victory.

Funaki vs. Mark Henry- Early on Funaki ducked several Henry clothesline attempts and ran off the ropes. Funaki tried to fly at Mark Henry, but bounced off Henry like a brick wall. Henry then with a headbutt to Funaki and also walked on his chest. Funaki tried to get a move off the ropes, but as he jumped Henry caught him in mid air. Henry then bodyslammed Funaki down with a special finisher to capture a very quick pinfall victory.

Benoit shown backstage headed to the ring for his upcoming match vs. Finlay.

Finlay vs. Chris Benoit- A prep match for Benoit prior to his 2 of 3 falls match at Judgement Day, where he will defend the US Title. The 2 men locked up in the middle of the ring early. Once in the corner of the ring, Benoit finally able to gain some momentum and then knock down Finlay. Benoit with a slam of Finlay, then ran off the ropes to drop an elbow on Finlay. After a failed pinfall by Benoit, Finlay able to reverse things and take Benoit down for a submission hold. Finlay continued to hold a headlock on Benoit in the center of the ring. As Benoit finally got to his feet, Finlay slid out of the ring. Benoit ran off the ropes and tried to dropkick Finlay, who moved aside. Finlay then tossed Benoit into the steel steps/ringpost. Finlay went to use his Shalalee, but the ref slid out of the ring and prevented him from doing so. Once the 2 men got back into the ring, Benoit started to gain some momentum, and landed a series of German Suplexes on Finlay. Benoit went onto the outside apron to try to climb the ropes, but Finlay able to run over and knock Benoit down to the outside of the ring. As Benoit re-entered the ring, Finlay with a takedown and then submission hold center of the ring as Smackdown went to break.

Back from break, Finlay was continuing to punish Benoit's left leg and knee with a submission hold. Benoit got back to his feet briefly to land a series of chops to Finlay's chest. Finlay knocked Benoit down yet again then put a Boston Crab style move onto Benoit. When Benoit was finally able to get to his feet again, Hornswaggle came out from under the ring. Hornswaggle entered the ring and went to go at Benoit, who turned and grabbed him and started to put a figure 4 on the Leprechaun. MVP then randown into the ring and attacked Benoit. As Benoit fought with MVP in the corner, Finlay ran at Benoit from behind and hit him in the knee with the shalalee. MVP then continued to beatdown the injured Chris Benoit, in an attempt to gain advantage for this Sunday's match. Benoit won this match via disqualification.

Ozzy Osbourne and his band seen walking backstage with Jillian trying to tell Ozzy about her singing. Ozzy waved her off as he and the band continued to head out for their upcoming performance.

"I Don't Want to Stop" performed live by Ozzy Osborne from his upcoming album, "Black Rain" available May 22nd. The performance featured flames, firework explosions and camera shots of a rockin crowd.

Christian York vs.The Miz - Miz clotheslined York down early and then used a neckbreaker on him. Miz tossed York to the corner after he fought back briefly. Miz then ran at York and clotheslined him in the corner,followed by a swinging neckbreaker for the pinfall victory.

Backstage Kristal thanked Teddy Long for allowing Vickie Guerrero the opportunity to be the Smackdown assistant. As they were talking, a knock came and Vickie entered. Vickie began thanking Teddy for the opportunity to come talk to him. She also mentioned how special Kristal is and how she always talks about Teddy. Teddy then began smiling and granted Vickie the interview for Smackdown assistant GM.

William Regal vs. Kane - Before the match started, Boogeyman's music came onto the speakers. The arena darkened as Boogeyman crawled onto the ramp with Little Boogeyman on his back. Boogeyman and Little Boogey watched the match from outside the ring.

Kane put Regal in the corner early and started to choke him,but then was stunned when he ran at him and Regal kicked Kane. Regal dominating Kane for a bit as a foam-mouthed Boogeyman looked on. Regal hammered away at Kane who was down on the mat. With the two men on their feet, Kane and Regal traded punches. Kane grabbed Regal off the corner for a sidewalk slam. Kane then jumped off the ropes and flew at Regal, knocking him down. Dave Taylor went to interfere in the match from the side apron, after Regal slid out of the ring. Taylor got down outside of the ring, but then managed to clothesline Boogeyman from behind outside the ring. Taylor then grabbed Little Boogeyman and tossed him into the ring, where Regal was waiting. Regal put Little Boogey in the corner, who was able to escape from Regal, as a waiting Kane chokeslammed Regal down. Kane scored a 3 count pinfall victory. Boogeyman and Little Boogey slid back into the ring with a bag of worms. Regal managed to slide out of the ring and head up the ramp with Taylor, as Boogeyman and Little Boogey enjoyed a mouthful of worms. Kane smirked at the 2 as they left the ring.

Edge's Inaugaral Smackdown Address- Teddy Long in the ring introduced the World Heavyweight Champion, Edge to the crowd. Edge took the mic in the ring and told the crowd he is their World Heavyweight Champion. Edge told the crowd he's ashamed to be a Canadian citizen and an American citizen. Edge said he never got the respect he deserved on Monday Night RAW and it made him sick. Edge said he believes Smackdown audience is more sophisticated and will judge someone based on talent and not popularity. Edge said he will be a champion that they can be proud of, and that he will take on all comers. Teddy Long interrupted and told Edge he would hold him to that statement, and that this Sunday Edge needs to remember he is taking on Batista. Edge said he doesn't care and isn't afraid of Batista, because he was able to do in 3 seconds what Batista couldn't in 3 months. Just then Batista's music came on and Batista came down to the ring.

Batista welcomed Edge to Smackdown, then told him the same thing he told the Undertaker: "That title belongs to me, and this Sunday I'll be needing it back". Batista then grabbed Edge's hand and shook it tightly as the two stared each other down.
