Is Orton the #1 Contender?

It's interesting the way Coach determined Randy Orton to be a #1 contender for Cena's title at Summerslam. Coach informed the audience and wrestlers he would personally select a contender by watching matches on Raw. Randy Orton won a single match against a newcomer in Cody Rhodes, then seriously injured his legendary father Dusty. The main question would be, how is that deserving of the #1 contender spot? Furthermore, it's strange how Lashley went from a top notch viable #1 contender to the role of chasing Carlito around the arena on Raw. We saw Shawn Michaels come out on Raw the night after losing to Cena at Wrestlemania, and HBK was still challenging Cena. So why would Lashley stop after the Bash? Yes he has a history with Coach, but Coach could have interfered in Lashley earning the previous #1 contender spot and didn't.

The best way to determine the contender would have been another tournament, not Coach's choice. Even a battle Royal would seem a better idea. Check out who wrestled on Raw: Randy Orton, Jeff Hardy, Mr. Kennedy, Cody Rhodes, Carlito, Hacksaw Jim Duggan, Kendrick & London, World's Greatest Tag Team, Sandman, William Regal, Umaga, Cade and Murdoch. The divas as well. Lashley and King Booker were not involved in any contests, yet both were considered top contenders for the past months (both competed in a title match with Cena as well). Mr. Kennedy while losing, gave a strong performance against Jeff Hardy. Jeff Hardy was coming off a tough loss to Umaga after giving his all the night before. By my judgement Jeff Hardy appeared as more of a #1 contender then Orton did on Raw. While Orton has good in-ring skills, so does Jeff Hardy. Hardy showed more skill, resilience and intelligence in his victory, outlasting Kennedy and getting into the ring to avoid a countout. It's tough to fathom how Coach can say he picked the best #1 contender when not everyone from the roster was involved in a match, and wrestlers besides Orton gave better performances in their matches.

To inject some creativity into the title match, why not a Triple Threat or Fatal Fourway for Summerslam? Cena vs. Lashley vs Orton, or toss King Booker into the mix. Orton beating a relative newcomer to WWE and sending his legendary father out on a stretcher doesn't prove he is title-worthy. A well-earned victory in a tournament or battle royal would. As much as I enjoy WWE, the fans always deserve the best matches possible, because it's what they pay for. Putting Orton into a title spot again and again after he's been there and failed doesn't make sense at this point.

I agree with you 100%. What is there about Randy Orton that deserves another shot at the title? Nothing, at this point.

You brought up a good point.... the fans deserve to see the best matches becasue that is what they pay for. By Coach picking who he sees fit as the No.1 contender does not in any way shape or form represent what the fans would want. I am quite sure I can speak for a lot of fans when I say I am tired of seing the same matches over and over again. More specifically, I am tired of seeing Orton go up for the belt when there are other wrestlers who are far more talented/ qualified.

It's kinda funny really, my fiance and I were just discussing the same thing the other night. RAW needs some new blood to go up for the belt, to bring something fresh to the storyline. I think you pick as Jeff Hardy as a better #1 contender is dead on. Call me biased if you will (I am a Hardy fan through and through), but that would at least be something new, something we haven't seen the writers spit out a gazillion times. Jeff deserves a big push, and I think that would be just the way to do it. I attended RAW in Lafayette, LA just recently and (aside from Lashley), Jeff got the best crowd response when he entered the ring.

I myself was curious as to why Lashley was not persuing Cena after the GAB. I thought that would at least make a good storyline. Since Lashley did not win the title, I thought for sure this would become a drawn-out fued with Cena. Funny how it hasn't.

Well, those are my thoughts. Hardy for Champ! I'm out...
