Colin Delaney - Next WWE Superstar?
The past month or so has seen amateur wrestler Colin Delaney being absolutely pulverized on the ECW show on Sci Fi. First he loses to Shelton Benjamin. Next up, he's completely destroyed by the monstrous Big Daddy V. He appeared this past week and was told he wouldn't be facing an ECW star. The battered and bruised youngster seemed anxious to leave the ring, but Tazz informed him he'd be facing Mark Henry from Smackdown. Needless to say, it didn't look pretty for the newcomer as Henry beat him down quickly and soundly.
According to an ECW article by Zack Zeigler on WWE.com, Colin Delaney may be destined to be a superstar:
"While watching a Colin Delaney match can be as one sided as a singles match with an old school Wrestling Buddy doll, he still entertains us. Holding steadfast to the hope that he’ll figure out a way to thwart off opponents like Big Daddy V, The Dominating Force in WWE, or Shelton Benjamin, a proven amateur wrestling standout, demonstrates Delaney’s commitment to the sport. He never quit and never ran away from the ring."
There's been other wrestlers in the past who started off as amateurs and weren't expected to become much in WWE. Examples are Paul London and Brian Kendrick who eventually became the tag champs. Santino Marella was picked randomly out of a crowd at the Raw event in Italy, and ended up winning the Intercontinental title (thanks to Bobby Lashley's help). There was also Zach Gowen who entertained WWE fans as he wrestled on just one leg. He was involved in a famous situation with Hulk Hogan as Mr. America, and also with Brock Lesnar who was attacking him on episodes of Smackdown.
He doesn't have a superstar profile on WWE.com yet, but it's quite possible that Colin Delaney is destined for greatness. Despite his scrawny appearance, he may be that next "1-2-3 Kid" (X-Pac) type wrestler who grabs a surprise win and becomes a recognizable superstar in the WWE. In the meantime, he'll most likely be the punching bag for various top notch wrestlers looking to gain some quick and easy wins.
