Raw: Y2J Saves the Show
Last night's Raw included more mayhem to continue feuds and title contention into the Backlash PPV. Mickie James pulled off a big upset win, Chris Jericho was made a special referee, Randy Orton beat Regal in his homeland, John Cena was a no-show, and we received news on next week's 3 hour show. Most impressive match of the night was easily the Intercontinental title defense by Y2J.
The Chris Jericho Umaga IC title fight on Raw Monday night had the intensity and feel of a PPV match, so it's surprising they didn't add it to the Backlash card. It's how more matches should be done on the WWE TV shows. Jericho did an impressive job of convincing fans that he was giving it all he had and outsmarting his opponent to keep the belt around his waist. He definitely has the ability to become a top notch WWE or World Heavyweight champ as Jim Ross pointed out in a recent blog. Either way, last night's performance definitely showed Jericho's abilities to tell a great story in the ring.
The other title match of the night saw Mickie James surprise pin Beth Phoenix to take the Women's Title back. It's highly doubtful that Mickie can continue that sort of thing against a dominant diva like the Glamazon Beth Phoenix. Carlito & Santino are now #1 contenders for the WWE tag titles. Expect to see them use some sort of antics to pull off a win against Rhodes and Holly for the belts, maybe at Backlash.
Other great news came on Raw that next week's 3 hour Raw will actually be the King of the Ring tournament. Superstars from Smackdown, Raw & ECW all compete for the title of "King". As fans know the last wrestler to be crowned King was Booker who has since left with Sharmelle for TNA. After watching Raw last night, Paul Burchhill seems to fit the role of King despite the fact he is so now. Many of the past Kings also had a Queen along with them. It would work perfectly for Burchhill with his sister in the strange sort of relationship they display. Another logical choice would be Edge who could further make his romance with Vickie Guerrero disgust fans and wrestlers more. It's tough to really make a pick for the winner of this tournament as the competitors are yet to be announced, but it will definitely be an interesting and entertaining night.
