2008 One Night Stand Predictions
Sunday's One Night Stand Pay-Per-View offers a unique format in that all matches will be fought under "Extreme Rules" meaning wrestlers will shed blood, knock each other out and force opponents to quit. The PPV originated from the ECW brand, and has been continued over the past several years as ECW joined WWE. Now there will be titles, opportunities and careers on the line as various WWE Superstars and Divas battle it out. Here's WWE Characters the Blog's predictions for the entire One Night Stand card.
Jeff Hardy vs. Umaga
Jeff Hardy's looking to work his way back towards the IC title and winning this match should help. Look for Hardy to pin Umaga, possibly doing a daredevil move to win it, ala his leap of death onto Randy Orton on Raw months ago. It should be a fierce battle, but makes more sense for Jeff Hardy to pull off the win as he pushes his way back towards the IC or WWE title.
Prediction: Jeff Hardy wins, possibly pinning Umaga in the audience or up near the top of the ramp.
John Cena vs. JBL
First guy to draw blood on his opponent in this one wins it. JBL may bring another object into play with the ref not seeing it. In their feud lately, it has seemed the advantage has gone to Cena lately, so it might time for a JBL win here. Eventually Cena will need some time away to promote or work more on his WWE movie "12 Rounds".
Prediction: JBL draws blood on Cena 1st to win the match.
Shawn Michaels vs. Batista
Smackdown superstar Batista says he's a man of his word, and the word is he plans to hurt Shawn Michaels. In a stretcher match, the way to win is to beat your opponent to the point he must be taken away on a stretcher. The last one of these contests at a PPV featured Finlay vs. Rey Mysterio. Expect both HBK and The Animal to give this match their all. The wildcard could be Chris Jericho interfering as he stopped himself from hurting HBK on this past week's Raw. Also, Batista has been warned by Vickie Guerrero not to make Smackdown look bad at the event.
Prediction: Batista wins possibly thanks to interference from Y2J. Shawn Michaels leaves via stretcher.
Melina vs. Beth Phoenix
In a first, a divas match will be part of the Extreme Rules competition. Recently Melina has cost Beth the opportunity to win the Women's title back, setting off this ferocious feud. It wouldn't be surprising to see one or both of these WWE Divas moved to the Smackdown roster in a few weeks with the WWE draft. Both make for great heels, but recently Melina has seemed to become more of a face. Both divas will try to make their opponent quit, but WWE Diva Beth Phoenix is definitely the more dominant diva. Expect Phoenix to put Melina in some sort of submission hold forcing her to quit.
Prediction: Beth Phoenix wins the match after making Melina scream "I Quit".
CM Punk, Morrison, Chavo, Dreamer & Big Show
Five guys face off here, each of whom has worn the ECW belt at one time or another. The winner gets to face WWE Superstar Kane for the ECW title at Night of Champions. Big Show has shown his dominance in the past few weeks as he came back on his own and tossed his name into the mix. He's decimated the other guys in the ring and looks on track to win this one. I'd rule out CM Punk due to the fact he has that MITB briefcase, so his winning makes little sense here. Punk may even cash in for one of the other titles as Smackdown commentator Mick Foley suggested. With a Last Man Standing match or TLC, Punk could turn heel and cash in to grab the title. The win should go to Big Show setting up a new battle of the behemoths for ECW.
Prediction: Big Show wins the Singapore Cane match to set up a showdown with Kane at Night of Champions.
Randy Orton vs. Triple H
A fierce battle should go down yet again between these two superstars over the coveted WWE title. Triple H has been getting it done lately, no matter what the circumstances involved. In the previous Last Man Standing match where he lost the WWE title to Orton, Triple H was competing in his third match of the card. At One Night Stand he will be fresh as he goes one on one with Orton. Expect Triple H to be the Last Man Standing, but it will be a brutal one.
Prediction: Triple H is Last Man Standing and retains the WWE title.
Edge vs. Undertaker
The toughest match to predict on the card, with the added stipulation that Undertaker is banished from WWE forever should he lose this one. On Smackdown, WWE Superstar Edge and La Familia tried their best to put Taker in a casket. However, Undertaker escaped as the lights dimmed, and he appeared up on the ladder in the ring with Edge. Taker knocked Edge from the ladder, but will this be the outcome Sunday? With the WWE anything's possible, and to think that Undertaker would be done forever in this manner is hard to fathom. He'd most likely go out in a way similar to Ric Flair, at Wrestlemania 25 with his streak in tact. So if he loses, expect that maybe Teddy Long shows up on Smackdown again telling Vickie she over-stepped her authority in banishing Taker. Edge does very well in TLC matches, so it wouldn't be a shocker for him to cheat yet win to get the title back.
Prediction: Edge wins the TLC match to win the World Heavyweight Title. Taker's loss means he is banished from WWE, but don't count on the "forever" part.
This card seems a bit easier to predict due to the nature of the matches, but there's always chance for surprises, interference and CM Punk cashing in that MITB contract. Should be a good one!
