2009 Extreme Rules PPV Predictions
Extreme Rules comes our way on Sunday June 7th, 2009 on Pay-Per-View. The Extreme Rules 2009 card features WWE matches each with various stipulations, meaning wrestlers are going to put it all on the line. In one situation, Randy Orton will be locked inside a steel cage, forced to defend the WWE Title against an angry Batista. In another, Jeff Hardy attempts to climb the proverbial ladder and win the World Heavyweight Title for the first time in his career. Speaking of careers, Tommy Dreamer's is on the line as he enters into a Triple Threat match for the ECW title. If he doesn't win it, Dreamer's time with WWE & ECW is finished. Most likely we will see 2 or 3 titles change here, which is most of them. Here's a look at predictions for Extreme Rules 2009.
CM Punk vs. Umaga
Somethings gotta give for CM Punk, winner of the 2009 Money in the Bank match at Wrestlemania 25. Either he's holding the briefcase until someone else takes it from him, or WWE's really leading us to a big payoff for Punk. Could it be at this Pay-Per-View? Quite possibly. A Jeff Hardy and CM Punk feud over the title could be an interesting affair. But back to this match, it seems as if Punk needs a major win over the Samoan Bulldozer and at Umaga's own game. Punk should get the win here, but can he do enough to prevent Umaga from stopping him from cashing in the MITB briefcase again? It's doubtful that Punk will tie up Umaga to a fence backstage or outside, but that might be what it takes.
Prediction: CM Punk finally gets a win in his feud with Umaga.
Chris Jericho vs. Rey Mysterio
Jericho seems like the likely inheritor of the IC title and probably does it here. He won't demask Mysterio, but will probably try during their fight. Jericho will find some way to incapacitate the champ enough to gain a pinfall victory and break his own record as 9 time Intercontinental Champ. He recently took out Mysterio on Smackdown and usually that's an indicator the underdog or injured star will win it. Here we'll probably get the opposite and Jericho is your winner.
Prediction: Chris Jericho wins via pinfall to become new Intercontinental Champion.
Tommy Dreamer vs. Jack Swagger vs. Christian
Tommy Dreamer has stated if he doesn't win the ECW title prior to his contract expiration, he's done with WWE/ECW. He's had two opportunities at the title in recent times, both of which were spoiled by Jack Swagger. So they can really go two ways with this. Give Dreamer the much needed big win and keep him alive for the sake of the fans, or Swagger wins it to establish his heel character even further. He'll be more hated by the fans. I think Dreamer wins it. He had his contract extended by a day by ECW's interim GM Tiffany, and there's also been news that he's been announced for various WWE house shows. It'd be a shame to see Dreamer go out this way with just 1 ECW title reign, so let's pick Dreamer as your new ECW champ.
Prediction: Tommy Dreamer wins the ECW title over Swagger & Christian, to keep his career going.
Santina Marella vs. Vickie Guerrero
This will be the comedic relief of the whole event, with Santino as Santina in full drag wrestling Raw's snotty and annoying General Manager Vickie amongst pigs in a hog pen. There will be pigs, mud, dirt and grime and in the end Santina will not only embarass Vickie but also regain the Miss Wrestlemania crown. Of course, some other unforeseen superstar may interfere to set off a feud with Santino, such as William Regal or The Miz, but most likely Santina scores the victory in this one after Vickie embarassed Santino on Raw last week.
Prediction: Santina Marella defeats Vickie Guerrero to win back Miss Wrestlemania crown.
MVP vs. Matt Hardy vs. William Regal vs. Kofi Kingston
This is the newest announced match of the Extreme Rules card. With Kofi just recently winning the United States title it would really diminish things if he lost it suddenly. It would not only diminish the respectability of the US title but also make people question Kofi as a serious competitor, much like they might have with CM Punk when he lost the World Heavyweight title so fast. I think Kofi retains by pinning Matt Hardy or perhaps MVP/Regal gets clubbed with Hardy's cast, then pinned by Kofi.
Prediction: Kofi Kingston retains the US title with a pinfall on Matt Hardy.
John Cena vs. Big Show
The theme we've got going here is Cena overcomes the toughest challenges, no matter what or who he faces. That's been the basis of his career, his character and now his push towards another WWE Title reign. He's being propelled for another eventual tangle with Batista, because these guys had just one fight and each was injured in it. There's most likely a second battle coming at Summerslam, the anniversary of their only other match. In this submission match, Cena finds a way to make Show submit. Maybe it's not by STF but some other means, but Cena will overcome, again.
Prediction: John Cena wins via submission over Big Show.
Batista vs. Randy Orton
Unfortunately for Batista, he's just the guy that is helping Orton continue his WWE title reign. In the past weeks, Batista has had to watch his friend Ric Flair get pulverized by Orton and Legacy. Batista's tried to warn Flair not to compete anymore at least not to tangle with Orton, but Flair continued to do so. Last week's Raw saw Flair decimated inside a steel cage, Punt kicked by Orton. I had started kicking around (no pun intended) a Flair conspiracy theory against Batista, but we all know the Punt kick knocks guys out for weeks (McMahon, HHH, Batista). So I don't see Flair getting involved here, but possibly Legacy or even Orton's father shows up to slam the cage door on Batista's head as he tries to exit. Either way, Orton finds a way to win it and retain his WWE title.
Prediction: Randy Orton wins to retain the WWE Title against Batista.
Jeff Hardy vs. Edge
Jeff Hardy got to choose the stipulation and it hopefully will aid him in the win. He's had Edge's number quite a bit, then was beat up in a 2 on 1 Handicap match by Edge and Jericho. Hardy's the master of extreme, and both he and Edge have competed in plenty of Ladder matches. Edge has lost the title before in a TLC match. Hardy used a ladder to make his brother say "I Quit", before jumping off it onto Matt on a table. I think Jeff's poised to finally win the title...
However, the more you think about it, a ladder is what took CM Punk to the 2009 Money in the Bank briefcase. Could both men be layed out in the ring as Punk cashes in and climbs the ladder to retrieve the belt?
Let's play it safe and pick Jeff to win this one, but don't count CM Punk out unless he's a bit "tied up" from earlier in the night.
Prediction: Jeff Hardy climbs the ladder to retrieve and win the World Heavyweight Title.
