Smackdown Preview 01.01.10
Tonight Smackdown will usher in a brand new year, 2010, and what better way to do so than with a championship match? On tonight's episode, the brand new Intercontinental Champion, Drew McIntyre, will have to defend his title in a rematch against the former champion, John Morrison. There's no love lost between these two, especially after Morrison's recent confrontation with McIntyre in the ring. During that incident, Morrison once again insulted McIntyre, saying nobody can understand him, and ended up putting McIntyre down for a Starship Pain in the corner. McIntyre definitely was angered by the attack, but will that give him the momentum to retain his title on Smackdown? Or will Morrison welcome in the New Year with another Intercontinental title win?
Smackdown also heads into 2010 with The Undertaker as its current reigning World Champion. Last week, Undertaker had a Christmas night title defense on Smackdown against #1 Contender Rey Mysterio. Their match was back and forth, with both superstars showing grit and determination. However, when it seemed that the Deadman was preparing for victory, an unexpected attack occurred from The Animal, Batista. The match ended up in disqualification, and afterwords it was the little big man, Mysterio, getting the upperhand on both men. Rey hit the 619 on both Undertaker and Batista, leaving them layed out as he escaped the ring. What will the aftermath be from this title match interruption? Will GM Teddy Long grant Mysterio another opportunity at Undertaker's belt?
As for the Royal Rumble, it has been announced that Smackdown will host a "Beat the Clock" tournament in order to determine Undertaker's opponent for the next Pay-Per-View. Smackdown superstars will do their best to win their matches in a timely fashion. The wrestler with the quickest overall time in the series of matches will move on to Royal Rumble 2009 and get a shot at the Deadman's World Heavyweight title. Who will face who in these competitive matches? Which Smackdown star will prevail and head to RR 2009 to face Undertaker?
