Extreme Makeover for Cena?

Phillyburbs write Eric Gargiulo discusses the insider info (from PWInsider.com), that John Cena's WWE character will be changing soon. Gargiulo and others speculate that Cena will finally turn heel, and that's it a good thing just as it was for characters like The Rock and Hulk Hogan.

Gargiulo writes:

I don’t think this is a bad thing or any kind of an insult towards Cena. All of wrestling’s biggest superstars tweaked or changed their gimmicks from time to time. Hulk Hogan is the perfect case of a wrestler who found a second lease on life with the N.W.O. The only thing wrong with listening to the fans is when you don’t. The writing has been on this wall for quite a while.

Some are already concluding that this will lead to a heel turn by Cena. Cena hasn’t been a heel in years, but knows the part well. I think this would be a tremendous business move from all involved. Half of the crowd hates him already. Cena won’t have to do much to lose his remaining loyalists. The turn would also open a ton of doors to new feuds for the next few years.

Will this move hurt merchandise sales that Cena has propelled? Even though Cena is out with injury, fans still support and buy his items. The success of a new Cena really depends on the angle the creative team takes. This may very well be the time to give Cena a Stone-Cold/Rock type transformation. Fans will remember Cena's past heel character, a battle-rapper who insulted his opponents in the ring. He even went as far to cut a promo urinating on Undertaker's grave. Gargiulo also writes that "babyface thugs", which is what Cena's character currently is, never get over with the fans. I'm not sure I full agree as Cryme Tyme aren't exactly heels, but some may call them "thugs".

So will a Cena character change be good or bad for the brand? Does it matter at this point? Feel free to leave your thoughts on Cena below.

I'm here to say that, if it happens, I stop watching wrestling from this point on. I like him just as his character is now, and I'm not in the mood to suddenly have to switch. To me, there's almost no one else really worth watching these days, based on personality, and he never goes over the top with it either, unlike a lot of other young wrestlers. Randy Orton is the worst character they've ever had, and if that's the way they're going to take Cena, I'm outta here.

I think that "mitch" needs to calm down, this has been happening since I was a kid, go ahead and quit watching buddy, it wont hurt the WWE any.

Cena is Cena it dont matter which way he is. hes gonna put on a show, but it would be awesome if he goes back to battle rapping. But not likely. I also think this could give it more storylines for him and more fights. I'm a cena fan. i guess ill have to wait and see how it plays out before i can assume anything

I am a big Cena fan. It could go either way good or bad. Look what happened with stone cold, he played the bad ass role and everyone still cheered for him. I would like to see it only if its done in a tastful, entertaining way, that way maybe later on down the road he have the fan base as a babyface that he once had....

I think they may be doing this to lead to a Cena/Hogan riveraly, since there are rumors of a posible Hogan return.

I think it should be a good move. while a lot of cena's fans are the young folk, cena has been babyface for a while and i'm sure many of those younger fans are beginning to grow older and maybe even more rebellious. now would be a good time to capitalize on those maturing kids by maturing and evolving Cena's character. It would be fresh and "cool". Kinda like the original ECW product. it was geared towards a more mature crowd.. but keep in mind that many fans in that mature crowd were once little hulkamaniacs. they grew and matured and therefore flocked to a new mature product in ECW and it became hot.

I think this will be very interesting, considering almost everybody hates him.
