Smackdown Recap 09.19.08


Smackdown Recap from Nashville, TN:

Smackdown opened with highlights of the Championship Scramble from Unforgiven, Triple H came out successfully with his WWE title despite Jeff Hardy having a pinfall at the same time as HHH's last second pin. The two confronted each other on last week's Smackdown, with HHH saying he hopes Jeff becomes #1 Contender for the title, so he can barely miss winning it again. Later in the night, Hardy was abl eto win the Fatal Fourway to capture the #1 Contender spot. Hardy's celebration was short-lived because Vladimir Kozlov walked down to the ring and left Jeff decimated in the ring.

Tazz announced tonight's match between Jeff Hardy and Brian Kendrick, with Jim Ross announcing that the champ Triple H will go against MVP. Divas Champ Michelle McCool came down to the ring to start off the show.

Maryse vs. Michelle McCool
Divas Championship match

In a rematch from Unforgiven, McCool defended her title against Maryse on Smackdown. Maryse seemed to have control of things as she kicked Michelle down on the mat, and eventually locked in a modified Camel Clutch type submission. Michelle was able to stand up and back into Maryse several times to break things up. Maryse quickly yanked Michelle's hair and slammed her back to the mat.

Michelle finally regained control after Maryse tried to throw her over the top rope. Michelle landed on her feet on the apron and rammed into Maryse. The two continued to battle with Maryse grabbing Michelle's arms to try to lock her up for a pinfall. Michelle reversed the move then was able to pick up Maryse and slam her down in a vicious finisher, the Wings of Love.

Winner: Michelle McCool defeats Maryse via pinfall to retain the WWE Divas Championship.

Jim Ross reminded fans that Thursday October 2nd will be a world television premiere of Wrestlemania 24. Friday October 3rd will be the debut of Smackdown on MyNetwork TV at 8PM. Check your local listings for more info.

Backstage, Vickie Guerrero and Big Show were discussing the Undertaker situation and the the World Heavyweight title. Eve came into the office for an interview, and asked about Undertaker. Vickie told Eve to ask her next question and Eve started to ask about getting in the ring to wrestle. Vickie and Show chuckled and Vickie told Eve to take a seat. Big Show had a remote control and played the video of Unforgiven where he layed out the Undertaker in the ring.




Ryan Braddock vs. Festus

Jesse and Festus came down to the ring dressed in movers uniforms carrying bubble wrap and wheeling down a box on a dolly. Last week Festus was wrestling Kenny Dykstra but the match ended when Jesse and Festus wrapped Dykstra up and taped his mouth, then wheeled him backstage on the dolly.

As soon as the bell sounded, Festus unloaded on Braddock, punching him in the corner. Braddock managed to escape the corner and dropkicked Festus into it. Braddock tried to come off the ropes at Festus but was met by a huge righthand punch. Festus continued to go after Braddock, but missed on a shoulder block. Braddock started using a headlock on Festus. Festus got to his feet, lifting up Braddock, then dropped down to slam him. From here Festus, performed his jumping splash to sit on Braddock, then used his face first slam to KO Braddock. Jesse tossed in some duck tape to Festus who began to tie up Braddock. The ref called for the DQ, sounding the bell, and Jesse got in the ring to continue tying up their latest victim.

Once again Jesse & Festus took their opponent hostage during the match as they wrapped Braddock in bubble wrap and tape, then wheeled him backstage.

Winner: Ryan Braddock wins via disqualification over Festus.




Backstage, Big Show and Vickie joked about Eve asking what they'd do if Undertaker shows up. Vickie said she'll make him get on his knees and apologize. The two reviewed the highlights of what they did to Taker at Unforgiven again.

R-Truth vs. Shelton Benjamin

In a non-title bout, the rising star R-Truth took on US champ Shelton Benjamin. R-Truth came down through the audience performing his "What's Up" rap song. Shelton Benjamin stood in the ring looking part bewildered and part unimpressed.

Benjamin displayed dominance early on, but Truth was able to hit a spinning forearm off the ropes to knock him down. Truth took Shelton to the corner and kept attacking, with Shelton recovering to start hammering Truth to the mat. Truth went for a hip toss as Shelton came off the ropes, but Shelton turned it into a powerslam. Shelton started to dominate again using a stretching submission of Truth over his knee, then an Irish whip to the corner. Truth was able to escape another hold and got to his feet throwing forearm punches at Shelton. The two continued to battle it out with Shelton trying to reverse an R-Truth move into a face-first slam. Instead, R-Truth countered and used a surprising roll-up pin to take the upset victory.

After Truth's victory, Gregory Helms appeared in a small circle up in the corner of the the screen saying he had a Smackdown update: "it appears the price of Gold just went down".

Winner: R-Truth wins via pinfall over Shelton Benjamin.




Smackdown Rewind showed Jeff Hardy's victory in the Fatal Fourway last week, followed by Vladimir Kozlov coming to the ring to attack him.

Jeff Hardy vs. The Brian Kendrick

Jeff came to the ring with a mic in hand to address the fans. Jeff discussed his rocky road in the WWE, and how he's still confident in himself, so the negative thoughts don't get to him. Jeff discussed HHH accusing him of never winning the big one. Jeff said he realizes that HHH was really trying to motivate and change him to be better. Jeff said it's worked, and he's better and ready to fight for the title.

Jeff began to speak to Vladimir Kozlov for the sneak attack last week, when Brian Kendrick came out to interrupt. Kendrick had a mic in hand and told Jeff he needs to worry more about him, right now. Kendrick said he lost last week in a free for all, but tonight's its 1 on 1.

Hardy was clearly upset as he started things off, taking Kendrick to the mat ferociously several times and beating him up in the corner. Kendrick was able to recover and knocked Jeff to the outside with Ezekiel looking on. Kendrick got Hardy back in the ring and began to put a submission on Jeff's leg. Jeff grabbed the ropes to break the hold. Jeff gained momentum and after knocking Kendrick down was trying to go to the corner for a Swanton. Kendrick grabbed his leg to stop Jeff. As they fought on their feet, Kendrick delivered a huge boot to Hardy. Kendrick whipped Jeff to the corner, where Jeff was about to do a Whisper in the Wind, but Ezekiel was near the corner eyeing him. Jeff came down and turned,and Kendrick kicked him in the stomach. Despite Kendrick's move, Jeff was able to reverse Kendrick's attempt to roll him up for a win.

After Hardy's victory as he was celebrating up the ramp, Vladimir Kozlov appeared to knock Jeff down on the top of the rampway. Kozlov stood over Jeff looking down at him.

Winner: Jeff Hardy wins via pinfall over The Brian Kendrick.

Vickie was speaking to an unknown man in her office when Big Show burst in. Show informed Vickie that he just saw the Undertaker. Show stood in a fighting stance, as the camera view switched to 1st person of the cameraman. Vickie told Show she'd handle this. Vickie demanded that the person supposed to be Undertaker kiss her feet and apologize. The fake did so, then revealed himself as Chavo dressed as Undertaker. Show, Chavo and Vickie all chuckled over it.




Smackdown saw the return of Carlito's Cabana, featuring host Carlito and his brother/tag team partner, Primo. Primo began saying the competition seems easy on Smackdown and it won't be long before they become tag team champs. The tag champs, Zach Ryder and Curt Hawkins showed up to interrupt the show. Gregory Helms showed up in the corner of the screen in a circle saying maybe they should be named Curt and Jerk. Carlito and Primo joked about not knowing who Ryder and Hawkins are.

Ryder and Hawkins got upset, then told them they are the tag team champs, and Carlito challenged them to a tag match right now. After some insults in Spanish, Ryder and Hawkins finally agreed to give them a tag team title shot next week on Smackdown. Jesse and Festus began to arrive down to the ring with bubble wrap and the dolly, just as Ryder and Hawkins started to attack the Colons. Jesse and Festus rushed into the ring to save the Colons and chased Ryder/Hawkins up the ramp.




Backstage, WWE Divas Maria and Brie Bella are show talking. Victoria and Natalya walked up to interrupt, promising that next week when they face off, they will find out Brie's secret.

Scotty Goldman vs. The Great Khali

Prior to the match a promo was shown of Goldman mocking Khali and Runjin Singh using a paper bag puppet to represent Singh as he translated. Khali dominated the match from the onset, tossing Goldman into the ring corner and then back down to the mat. Khali used standing clotheslines, then picked up Goldman for the doublehanded slam to the mat. Khali put one foot on Goldman's chest to make the pin.

Tazz announced that next week on Smackdown, Great Khali will face Vladimir Kozlov one on one.

Winner: The Great Khali wins via pinfall over Scotty Goldman.




WWE Mobile presented the Raw Rebound. Covered in the highlights were Jericho winning against CM Punk in the Steel Cage match for the World Heavyweight title. Later in the night, GM Mike Adamle decided to announce who would face Jericho for the title at No Mercy. Jericho came to the ring saying JBL and Batista should face off at No Mercy, then the winner faces Y2J for the title. Adamle came out and agreed to JBL vs. Batista, with the winner facing the champ, but not at No Mercy. Adamle presented that another wrestle came forward to give him a title match idea. Shawn Michaels came out and informed Jericho he'll be his opponent at No Mercy, in a ladder match.

Backstage, Ryder & Hawkins were shown discussing what just happened with the Colons, Jesse & Festus in the ring. Chavo told Bam, Ryder and Hawkins to leave so he could watch the footage of Big Show beating up the Undertaker. Chavo rolled the highlights from Unforgiven once again. Suddenly, the TV screen went to static and The Undertaker appeared on the screen. The Undertaker's music sounded and a hand, the Undertaker's was shown grabbing Chavo around his neck.




MVP vs. Triple H

In the main event, non-title bout, Triple H tuned up against MVP. MVP was impressive as he dominate The Game for a good part of the match. MVP tried to wear HHH down with a move holding HHH's arm back to strain it. HHH stood up on the mat and broke the hold, but MVP kneed him in the gut. MVP tried to whip HHH to the ropes, but MVP reversed it and was able to use a vicious armbar takedown to slam HHH to the mat. MVP went to charge at HHH in the corner with his running kick, but HHH turned and gave a boot to MVP's face, knocking him down. HHH and MVP began to punch back and forth in the ring, with HHH using a neckbreaker to drop MVP. HHH came off the ropes to drive MVP's face to his knee, then clotheslined MVP off the ropes.

After a failed pin, HHH whipped MVP to the corner. MVP used a boot in the charging champ's face. However, as MVP ran towards HHH he received a Spinebuster. MVP escaped out of the ring to recover, and as HHH came out, MVP was quick to retaliate. MVP tossed HHH into the ring and then climbed the corner. MVP jumped at HHH, but The Game recovered to kick MVP in the gut and deliver the Pedigree!

After Triple H's victory, Vladimir Kozlov came to the ring and Triple H motioned for him to bring it. Kozlov walked down staring at HHH, then got into the ring. The two faced each other from opposite corners with HHH asking for it. MVP got back up on the side apron and distracted HHH enough so Kozlov could attack. HHH fought back, punching Kozlov, but the Russian had too much brute force and started to ram HHH in the corner. HHH continued to fight back off the ropes, but a massive headbut from Kozlov dropped him to the mat. Kozlov let out a scream and stood looking down at HHH as Smackdown ended.

Winner: Triple H wins via pinfall over Great Khali.
