Add More Cyber to Sunday?

WWE began Cyber Sunday several years ago as a new "innovation" to allow the fans to interactively participate and control the card for a PPV. While the fans do vote and have some control over the show, the WWE ultimately has the say in what goes down. Normally, it seems as if the event is geared to look like the fans played a part, but everyone holds onto their belts. Last night actually gave us a nice surprise as one match produced a new champion in Batista, but did the fans really determine that?

Batista was able to capture the World Heavyweight title from Chris Jericho in the main event. The fans voted in Stone Cold Steve Austin as guest ref, and he played his part well. While the fans made this choice, the WWE still sent down the other 2 refs to participate, as well as JBL. When all was said and done, Batista found a way to defeat the trash talking, arrogant Jericho, and the fans may feel as if they helped somewhat in granting Batista a fair fight. If HBK had been voted to start the match as ref, would we have seen a similar scenario, with HBK knocked out, and Stone Cold running down to make a count for Batista?

It would be very interesting when WWE starts allowing fans to vote even more on complete matches. For example, allowing two title holders to fight, and choosing which belt is up for grabs. Santino vs. Shelton, which title will be up for grabs, or both? How about the fans possibly determining a title holder? The WWE lists 5 wrestlers including the current champ, and the fans choose 3 for a Triple Threat match. If the current title holder isn't in that Triple Threat Match, they won't be wearing the belt after Cyber Sunday. Instead of diva costume contests, how about classic diva matches as voted on by fans? And how about fans deciding between a Punjabi Prison, Hell in a Cell or Elimination Chamber...Alright, that might be a bit much, as WWE would need to prepare three huge structures and have them hanging above the ring.

As for the format of the show, why not start off with the matches fans weren't as interested in. Most likely these were the Intercontinental match involving Santino and Honky Tonk Man (no disrespect to the legends), and then the Miz/Morrison vs. Cryme Tyme match. In a related note, it was surprising to see the fans would prefer to see a war between feuding video bloggers instead of a title match involving Kofi Kingston, CM Punk facing Rhodes & Dibiase. This either says the WWE is really good at influencing the fan vote, or the fan vote was overruled.

Stone Cold, Jeff Hardy and Evan Bourne were landslide vote winners at Cyber Sunday, which may be the same thing we see in this year's presidential election with Barrack Obama. Unfortunately, fans will not be able to vote for the type of match Obama beats down John McCain in, it'll have to be an old fashioned election.
