ECW Recap 07.21.09

ECW Recap from Richmond, VA:

Josh Matthews welcomed fans to the ECW show less than a week before the upcoming Night of Champions 2009 Pay-Per-View.

Yoshia Tatsu vs. William Regal

Regal had a mic and told Yoshi prior to the match he "truly despises all foreigners", prompting a "You Suck" chant from the crowd. Despite some early offense from Yoshi, it wasn't long until Regal had control and began to punish the new superstar. Yoshi fought out of Regal's submission hold on his feet, but got kneed in the gut. Regal continued using holds to wear Yoshi down on the mat.

Yoshi was able to do a running bulldog like move from the corner and had Regal sitting on the mat so he could kick his back. As Yoshi went to the corner ropes, Regal got up and knocked him off. Regal prepared to deliver a running knee at Yoshi, but Yoshi avoided it then landed his roundhouse kick to finish off Regal.

Winner: Yoshi Tatsu wins via pinfall over William Regal.

Mike Williams vs. Ezekiel Jackson

Amateur wrestler Mike Williams got to feel the raw intensity of the recently-rebuilt Ezekiel Jackson in the ring. Ezekiel delivered a huge boot to level Williams from the start of things. Next, he delivered a vicious clothesline to knock Williams down, and for his third move picked him up to slam him to the mat for the pinfall win.

After the match had ended, Vladimir Kozlov made his way down to the ring. The two stared each other down, and then Kozlov grabbed the wrestler from the mat to show off his slam move, before leaving the ring. Jackson looked puzzled but finally left the ring too.

Winner: Ezekiel Jackson wins via pinfall over Mike Williams.

A new segment called "Ask the Divas" was shown with divas Eve Torres, Maria Kanellis, Kelly Kelly and the Bella Twins all giving relationship advice. Fans can log on to WWE Universe to send their own questions for the divas.

Goldust vs. Shelton Benjamin

Goldust had control early, until Shelton was able to slam him face first into the turnbuckle. Benjamin took control from here as he started kneeing Goldust in the back, then pulled him into a hard clothesline. Shelton continued the punishment with a neck submission hold to wear Goldust down. Goldust started to fight back and tried to run at Shelton in the corner. Shelton booted him away but as he ran Goldust grabbed him for a powerslam.

Goldust gained momentum and was able to hit a barrage of moves including a legdrop, but couldn't capture the pin. Shelton fought out to counter a move and hit a backbreaker, but couldn't get a pin either. Shelton went for a move off the corner and Goldust caught him with a punch from the mat. Goldust used the ropes to pull himself up, but Shelton got up fast, ran and jumped over the top rope, yanking Goldust's neck against the rope. Shelton then came back in the ring to hit Paydirt.

Winner: Shelton Benjamin wins via pinfall over Goldust.

ECW returned with Sheamus backstage. Sheamus mentioned how fans may have been used to seeing a Irishman running around with a leprechaun and shilaleigh. Sheamus said his career won't be a laughing matter and all opponents will fall prey to him.

Matt Striker and Josh Matthews discussed the upcoming Night of Champions featuring the Triple Threat match for the WWE Title, as well as the Unified Tag Team match where Jericho will choose a mystery partner. They also discussed Christian facing Tommy Dreamer for the ECW title.

Backstage, Gregory Helms interviewed Paul Burchill about his upcoming match against Tyler Reks. Just then they heard some strange noises, and looked over to see Goldust nearby holding the back of his head. Burchill walked over to yell at him and Goldust said it's because he got electrocuted two years ago. Burchill said he didn't care. Goldust said he was sorry but accidentally had a spasm and hit Burchill in the face with his hand. Burchill wanted to fight him but Katie Lea stopped him and told him to focus on his match instead.

Tyler Reks vs. Paul Burchill

Reks was able to hit a clothesline off the ropes early but Burchill came back with a backdrop. Katie Lea distracted Reks from ringside allowing Burchill to hit him from behind. Burchill tried to ground Reks with a submission. Reks battled back, and Burchill whipped him to the corner. Burchill ran at him but Reks avoided it. Unfortunately for Reks, Burchill took control yet again. Burchill locked another neck hold on Reks on the mat.

Reks got to his feet yet again and punched at Burchill, only to be thrown to the mat and kicked. Burchill used another headlock, and Reks stood up to power out, punching back. The two traded punches with Reks getting the upperhand. Reks was able to slam Burchill face first to the mat. Reks hit a dropkick off the top rope but couldn't get the pin for 3. Burchill grabbed Reks and hit a suplex, but failed at the pin as well. Finally, Burchill charged at Reks in the corner, and Reks dodged him, then rolled up Burchill for a pinfall.

As Reks was going out onto the apron to leave the ring, Burchill ran over and knocked him off the apron. The ref warned Burchill and Katie Lea to stay away from Reks who was down near the ring.

Winner: Tyler Reks wins via pinfall over Paul Burchill.

Backstage, Abraham Washington was shown shaking hands with people on his way out for the talk show.

The two men that got up in each other's faces. Dreamer told Christian his comment was a real slap in the face. Christian slapped Dreamer and said no that was. Dreamer slapped Christian back.
