Smackdown Recap 04.16.10

Smackdown recap from London, UK:

After a pyro display fired off for several moments, before Grisham welcomed fans to Smackdown from UK and Chris Jericho came down to the ring. Striker talked about how Jericho is disgruntled over the World title match between Swagger and Orton, as set up by David Hasselhoff.

Jericho talked about how a Raw superstar is going for the World Heavyweight title, when it should be exclusive to Smackdown. Jericho complained about not having a rematch for the title because Teddy Long is an incompetent buffoon. Jericho kept complaining he deserves a title shot after Orton v Swagger is over. This brought out Edge to the ring.

Edge agreed with Jericho that the title should be exclusive to Smackdown and defended between its stars. He also added Jericho deserves a swift kick. Edge told Jericho to give up on the rematch, saying he's been speared multiple times. The crowd started up the Spear chant as Edge and Jericho faced off. Teddy Long came out to break it up. Jericho demanded Teddy give him what he deserves right now. Teddy said it's up to him to decide when the rematch happens, and it will happen tonight. Jericho smiled about it and said Teddy finally has done the right thing. Jericho said Edge will never get a title shot again. Teddy said tonight's main event will be Jack Swagger defending the title against Chris Jericho, and Edge in a Triple Threat match. Jericho was upset over the decision as he walked up the ramp.

Drew McIntyre made his entrance to the arena, then got on the mic in the ring. McIntyre said the people here don't like him, maybe because he's young, handsome and the IC champion. Drew called himself the "chosen one". He said the people might not like him, well he doesn't like them either. Just then, Kane's pyro exploded near the top of the ramp.

Kane vs. Drew McIntyre

Late in the match, Kane took control with a huge clothesline on Drew in the corner, followed by the sideslam for a near fall. Kane went to the top of the corner for his clothesline and hit it. He prepared for the Chokeslam as Drew got up, then saw Kane and rolled to the outside. Drew started backing up the ramp, waving off the match. The ref began the countout. Matt Hardy came rushing down the ramp and grabbed McIntyre to toss him back in the ring for Kane. The ref called for the bell for a DQ giving Drew McIntyre the win. Kane still chokeslammed McIntyre. Hardy came into the ring to check on McIntyre, and Kane chokeslammed Hardy too, then unleashed his pyro from the corners of the ring.

Winner: Drew McIntyre wins due to DQ against Kane.

Jack Swagger barged into Smackdown GM Teddy Long's office and asked who he thinks he is. Swagger said this is the most unfair ruling he's ever made. Long said he's the GM of Smackdown and as long as Swagger is champion he'll deal with his rulings.

R-Truth vs. Dolph Ziggler

They showed footage from last week's Ziggler interview where Dolph put the sleeper hold on Josh Matthews to leave him passed out on the floor. Ziggler got on the mic in the ring saying GM Long has demanded he publicly apologize for abusing a TV announcer. Ziggler said from the bottom of his heart, deepest depths of his soul he severely and humbly apologizes to Josh Matthews. Just then, R-Truth's rap song came on and out came Truth delivering his entrance theme with the audience.

Truth told Ziggler he's got no heart, no soul and no sincerity or humility. Truth said Ziggler didn't mean a word he said earlier. Truth said in a few minutes he'll find out that "the truth hurts".

Truth had Ziggler down in the late stage of the match. He went for the Lie Detector, but Ziggler wisely dropped down to the mat to duck it. As Truth stood back up, Ziggler got the sleeperhold locked on from behind. Truth clutched around for the ropes, but Ziggler kept him away and then dropped to the mat to lock his legs around Truth's midsection. Eventually, Truth was out and Ziggler won it.

Winner: Dolph Ziggler wins by submission over R-Truth.

Mickie James vs. Michelle McCool

McCool arrived to the ring with Layla and Vickie Guerrero. Early on, McCool taunted Mickie by doing pushups, so Mickie did some as well. McCool sat up looking stunned and Mickie dropkicked her to take control for several near falls.

McCool regained control and locked a hold with her legs around Mickie's neck for quite a while. McCool held onto the ropes for a bit until the ref ordered her to stop. McCool broke the hold to pose for the audience, but Mickie began punching back. McCool kneed Mickie in the face a few times and shoved her, before a running knee to the head. Mickie managed to get a headscissors from off the corner to throw Michelle to the mat. Michelle eventually rolled out of the ring to recover, so Mickie chased her and threw her into the crowd barrier. She jumped off the barrier to take McCool down, then jumped on layla too. She almost went at Vickie but held back.

Layla jumped up on the apron to distract Mickie and the ref after Mickie DDT'd McCool. Mickie went over and kicked Layla off the apron, which allowed McCool to score a hard kick to Mickie's head for the KO. McCool continued to knock Mickie around in the ring despite the ref warning. Suddenly, Beth Phoenix rushed to the ring and grabbed McCool's leg. Layla pulled McCool out of the ring so Beth chased them all through the commentators area and into the crowd. Finally, Beth returned to the ring to raise Mickie's arm up.

Winner: Michelle McCool wins via pinfall over Mickie James.

Striker and Grisham reviewed last week's Smackdown where Swagger captured the World Championship after cashing in the MITB on Jericho.

Backstage, Luke Gallows told WWE NXT Darren Young if he gets another opportunity he'll beat him to a pulp and shave his head personally. Young asked what it feels like to lose to a NXT rookie. CM Punk rushed up to them to rally the troops. He said they don't fight backstage, they do it in the ring to show that Straightedge means "I'm better than You". They all made their way to the ring with Serena before a commercial break.

The Hart Dynasty & Rey Mysterio vs. CM Punk, Luke Gallows & Darren Young

The Miz joined Striker and Grisham on commentary. Miz bragged about defeating DH Smith in his dad's hometown and that Bret Hart will have to declare ShowMiz greatest tag team in the history of WWE. Miz said Hart Foundation, Dynasty and British Bulldogs were all good, but there can only be one best. Striker said they very well may be the greatest tag team of all time and Miz said they retired DX.

Hart Dynasty did an impressive double suplex, but held Punk up in the air for Mysterio to jump on from the top rope. Punk regained control in the corner and began pounding away on Mysterio's face, then stomped on him in the corner. Moments later, Mysterio countered a Punk move to get a tornado DDT. He was able to get Punk against the bottom rope and went for 619, but Punk escaped outside to regroup with SES. Commercial break ensued.

In the closing moments, Punk and Smith were legal in the ring. Smith watched as his partner Kidd jumped off the apron onto Luke Gallows. Punk took advantage by delivering a hard kick to Smith's head for a pinfall. Smith kicked out at 2 1/2. Smith avoided a charging Punk by hitting a drop toe hold to send Punk face first down into the corner. Serena slid under the bottom rope to interfere, but that only allowed Mysterio to deliver a 619 using the ringpost to knock Punk back. Smith grabbed him for the running powerslam and pinfall.

Winners: Rey Mysterio & The Hart Dynasty win via pinfall over CM Punk, Darren Young and Luke Gallows.

Chris Jericho was backstage with his NXT rookie Wade Barrett. Jericho said he hopes some day Barrett gets an opportunity to show he's the best at what he does. Barrett said he's in awe of Jericho's brilliance, and Jericho told him he should be.

JTG vs. Caylen Croft

Croft's Dudebusters partner Trent Barretta was with him for the match. Striker said JTG will need to retaliate for what Shad did to him to keep his cred on the block in NYC. Shad arrived out and walked down the ramp to watch the matchup.

JTG managed to recover a bit from Croft's dominating performance. JTG hit a spinning neckbreaker, then several clotheslines. He tossed Croft into the corner for a Facebuster, but Croft shoved him away then did a bulldog for a near fall. Croft whipped JTG to the corner and went for a move, but JTG kicked him. He rushed at Croft and hit a finisher for the win.

Just as JTG's music started up, Shad was in the ring to clothesline him down. Shad chased the ref off and looked down at JTG menacingly. He picked up his former partner then punched him down. He yelled in JTG's face "you ain't nothin' without me!" then whipped him to the corner. JTG retaliated though and managed to get Shad in the corner for a Facebuster. He dropkicked him out of the ring and yelled for Shad to get back in. Shad backed up the ramp looking angry.

Winner: JTG wins via pinfall over Caylen Croft.

Backstage, Edge was talking to Josh Matthews saying he can relate to Swagger cashing in the MITB just like Edge did. Edge said either way tonight he's walking out as World Heavyweight Champion.

Smackdown returned with Raw Rebound to show highlights from Orton vs. Batista. Orton avoided a Spear late in the match by kicking Batista in the shoulder. He then threw him into the ringpost shoulder first. Orton hit the RKO and had the pinfall, but Jack Swagger rushed into the ring to grab Orton for the Gutwrench Powerbomb. As Swagger left the ring to back up the ramp, John Cena rushed down the ramp and knocked Swagger down. Cena got in the ring to put the STF on Batista until refs restrained him.

Striker and Grisham talked about Extreme Rules 2010 matches including Cena vs Batista for the WWE title in a Last Man Standing match, Rey Mysterio vs CM Punk with Punk's hair on the line, and a Street Fight between HHH & Sheamus.

Jack Swagger made his way to the ring for the main event before Smackdown took a commercial break.

Edge vs. Chris Jericho vs. Jack Swagger
World Heavyweight title Triple threat

During the match, Swagger and Jericho worked together for a bit on Edge. They went for a move with Edge as they sent him to the ropes. Edge held on though and then ducked as Jericho and Swagger each ran at him. Both men went over the top rope. Edge ran from across the ring against the ropes and then dropkicked both guys down outside. He went to the outside the attack both men.

At one point, Jericho was on the apron with Swagger in the ring. Each guy tried to suplex the other, with Edge on the outside yanking Jericho's legs out. Jericho hit the apron chin first and Swagger snapped neck first off the top rope back into the ring. Commercial break followed.

Towards the end of the match, Swagger was out of the ring, and Jericho gained control to put Edge into Walls of Jericho. Swagger rushed in and Jericho broke the hold. He managed to get Swagger down and into the move as well. Swagger struggled to get free and finally Edge came over to DDT Jericho. Edge took Jericho down, then waited for Swagger to get up near the corner. Edge rushed at him for a Spear, but Jericho ran to clobber Edge down.

The close saw a series of moves, including Jericho hitting a Codebreaker on Swagger. Edge managed to Spear Jericho down and had a pinfall opportunity. Swagger was on the outside and yanked Edge out of the ring, threw him into the barrier. Swagger got into the ring and pinned Jericho after he had been Speared.

Winner: Jack Swagger wins via pinfall over Chris Jericho to retain the World Heavyweight title.

Post-match Swagger got Edge from outside the ring and brought him back in for a Gutwrench Powerbomb. Striker said it may have been a message for Randy Orton. Swagger held his World title up for display as his theme music hit and he headed up the ramp. Jericho returned to the ring to beat up Edge who was already down. Jericho went after the left achilles area that Edge had rehabbed to get back to WWE. Jericho pulled Edge groin first around the ringpost and put his left leg in between the steel steps area. Jericho ran and kicked the stairs to cause Edge immense pain. Jericho smiled an evil grin as he backed up the ramp. Edge was in pain in the ring as Smackdown ended.
