Raw Recap 05.17.10

Raw Recap from Toronto, Canada:

Michael Cole and Jerry Lawler were on hand, with six nights until Over the Limit. On tonight's show, WWE Champ John Cena faces Sheamus. The guest host will be NASA's Buzz Aldrin.

Bret "The Hitman" Hart arrived out to start the show off. In the ring, he brought up how he saw Raw last week where Miz wanted to face him in a US Title match. Bret said he called WWE HQ and agreed to the match. He talked about being remembered the right way in his wrestling career. Bret said he gave it a lot of thought, but he won't be wrestling anyone tonight. Just then, Chris Jericho's music hit and Jericho arrived down the ramp.

Jericho asked Hart why he even came back to WWE to start with. Jericho said he used to be the greatest of all time, but now he's a pathetic has been tarnishing his legend. Jericho said he's already one of those guys who holds on too long. He said Bret's a shameless, ego-driven phony and that's why he came back. Bret told Jericho he's the phony and needs to take a look in the mirror at himself.

Jericho said he's a man who's much better than Hart ever was, and now he's the best there ever will be. Jericho continued to insult and berate him, with the fans chanting support for Bret. Jericho told him that his father would be so ashamed of him. Jericho started to leave the ring, and Hart got on the mic telling him to tell Miz to go get his boots on. Jericho told Hart if he's smart he'll make this a no DQ match with no exceptions. Hart said he wouldn't want it any other way. Hart told Jericho that after tonight he's going to walk the streets with the US title belt on, and that Sunday the Hart Dynasty will wipe the floor with Jericho and Miz.

Cole and Lawler discussed that Bret may not have made a smart move with the no rules and no DQ. Tonight Sheamus battles Cena. Also, Edge and Orton will be in "Pick your Poison" matches, where they each submitted names of opponents for the other.

Lawler and Cole talked about how it's a no commercial show tonight, except in Canada. They said "now a word from our sponsors" and cut to a fake insurance type commercial with an actor asking if WWEShop could really save you money on WWE merchandise. He asked "Does the Great Khali really hate rental cars?" The skit cut to Khali back in the parking garage in a rental car with Singh in the passenger seat. A big white Hum-V came rolling up next to them and rolled the window down. Hornswoggle was driving and started laughing maniacally, pointing at Khali. Khali let out a scream as the WWEShop.com ad closed.

Christian vs. Edge

Edge got on the mic to say it seems Orton seems to be going after just about anyone including guest hosts. Edge said it's not going to happen to him and he's not going to RKO him at OTL. As Edge kept talking, Christian's music hit. It appeared that Randy Orton selected Christian as Edge's opponent for the first Pick your Poison matchup.

These two former tag partners and champions, had several great exchanges and near falls between them, with each gaining momentum at different spots. In the closing moments, Christian avoided a spear in the corner causing Edge to hit the corner hard. He did his pendulum kick from the apron to knock Edge down on the mat, then jumped off the corner with his uppercut. From there, Christian set up for Killswitch, but Edge countered and threw Christian shoulder first into the corner ringpost. Edge ran against the side ropes then speared Christian down to take the winning pin.

Randy Orton appeared on the Titantron after Edge's win. He said congrats on the win, but asked why Christian was out there, because that's not who he is facing tonight. Orton began laughing as the Undertaker's bells sounded. The lights dropped and The Undertaker arrived to the ring.

Winner: Edge wins via pinfall over Christian.

Edge vs. The Undertaker
Pick your Poison match

Edge was hesitant to even get in the ring from the apron, so the ref began to count him out. The count hit 10 as Edge dropped to the outside floor. Edge smirked from the outside as his plan seemed to work, but Christian snuck up behind him. Captain Charisma grabbed Edge and tossed him into the ring so Undertaker could deliver a Chokeslam to leave him flat on the mat.

Winner: The Undertaker wins due to countout of Edge.

Although it was commercial free, they ran a WWE commercial for Over the Limit PPV featuring Cena vs Batista I Quit Match.

Raw returned with Maryse reading a magazine with Trish Stratus on the cover. She asked why these Canadians like her so much. The makeup lady working on Maryse asked if she was Canadian, and Maryse chuckled saying she is French-Canadian and there's a difference. Maryse then started asking why people like Eve since she has no personality. Eve came walking up behind the makeup lady without Maryse seeing. Eve motioned for the makeup lady to leave, then started dumping powder on Maryse's hair. Maryse turned around and saw her, but Eve slapped her and started slamming her face against the table nearby. Refs ran in to break things up, pulling Eve away.

Buzz Aldrin was backstage with his wife Lois talking about how it's great to be back in Canada. Vickie Guerrero came in to introduce herself and shake hands. She started to say Buzz was in her office, but he said that wasn't true since she walked out as GM last week, resigning. Buzz fumbled with his lines a bit, saying he talked to WWE HQ and they said her replacement will be there next week. Vickie became enraged, so Buzz called in The Bella Twins as security to escort her out.

Cole and Lawler reviewed what Batista did to Mark Henry last week, using a steel chair to hammer away on him, then slapping on a painful submission hold.

Mark Henry vs. Batista

Henry arrived ot the ring with his left shoulder all bandaged up. He was almost down the ramp when Batista came rushing down from behind with a 2x4, smashing it across the back of Henry's shoulder/back. The Animal continued to attack him outside the ring, ramming Henry into the ringpost and kicking him around mockingly. Henry started to get up and Batista whipped him into the steel steps. Batista had a spotlight put on himself again to pose on the ramp after the damage was done.

Winner: No contest match never started.

Cole and Lawler talked about how the odds are looking bad for Cena this Sunday based on his opponent tonight, Sheamus, who he's never beaten. They reviewed highlights from December 09' in a Tables match when Sheamus shoved Cena off the corner through a table to win the WWE Title.

They did a mock "Priceless" credit card ad starring Ted Dibiase. They valued private acting lessons at over $14,000, the million-dollar championship at $1,000,000, then said self-respect: priceless. They showed Truth and Dibiase in their encounter weeks ago in the locker room where Truth slapped Dibiase after he tried to buy him. The ad said there's lots of things money can buy, for everything else the truth - "R-Truth".

Dibiase arrived out, and then Virgil came out from the backstage area. Cole and Lawler were shocked to see Virgil arrive out. They revealed a new match for OTL, where R-Truth will take on Dibiase.

Yoshi Tatsu vs. Ted Dibiase

Virgil was at ringside for the match, holding the ropes for Dibiase to enter the ring and taking his million dollar belt to the outside. Yoshi gained momentum during the match with double knees to Dibiase's chest in the corner, then a series of moves for a near fall. He got up and rallied the crowd. Dibiase stood up near the ropes and stumbled towards Yoshi. Yoshi went for the roundhouse kick but Dibiase ducked and caught him with Dream Street for the pinfall win.

After the win, Virgil started up the steps with the million dollar belt, but Dibiase ordered him to go get the mic and bring it into the ring. Dibiase said he found a guy who's not ashamed to be the new Virgil, the original Virgil. Dibiase said he'll have him in his corner this Sunday for OTL. Dibiase told R-Truth his trust fund has now kicked in and he can buy whatever he wants. He said if he can't buy it, he'll beat it.

Winner: Ted Dibiase wins via pinfall over Yoshi Tatsu.

Another Over the Limit PPV ad aired by WWE. This time it was the CM Punk and Rey Mysterio feud and match highlighted.

Cole and Lawler hyped up this Sunday's PPV. The camera cut backstage to US Champion The Miz talking strategy with Chris Jericho. Josh Matthews came rushing up to ask some questions. Miz snatched the mic away and kept walking as he cut a prom into the camera. He mocked Canadians being excited about Bret Hart competing again tonight. Miz said he's even more excited about Bret competing again though.

Miz came walking out with the mic still going on. He said Bret cost him the Unified tag titles. Miz said he's going to beat and publicly humiliate him to eradicate the Hart family name. He finished off his rant with the "I'm Awesome".

Bret Hart vs. The Miz
United States Championship No DQ match

Bret came to the ring in jean shorts, a Bret Hart hockey jersey and sunglasses. He put the shades on a kid in the front row then got in the ring.

Miz ducked out of the ring to get the mic after the bell rang. Miz said he forgot to tell him that he doesn't trust Hart because of the Hart Dynasty. Miz said he payed some guys to neutralize them when they do show up. Vladimir Kozlov and William Regal came to ringside, a tag team the Hart Dynasty defeated weeks ago. The Hart Dynasty emerged from ringside and immediately began fighting Regal/Kozlov up the ramp. Chris Jericho came rushing out from the crowd and got in the ring. Miz and Jericho prepared to doubleteam Bret. Natalya stepped into the ring to help Bret. Jericho started talking trash so she slapped Jericho.

Miz came up to grab her, so Hart punched him. Jericho attacked Hart knocking him to the mat, but DH Smith arrived into the ring and clotheslined Jericho over the top rope. Miz attacked Smith from behind, tossing him to the outside. From there, Miz began to attack Hart by himself in the ring. Miz began to put the Sharpshooter on Bret. Just then, Tyson Kidd jumped on the apron and did the Springboard dropkick to take Miz down. DH Smith returned to the ring and they did the Hart Attack. Next, Bret did the Sharpshooter and Miz immediately tapped out. Cole questioned if Miz deserved this.

Winner: Bret Hart wins via submission over The Miz to win the United States Championship.

A WWE advertisement for Wrestlemania 26 Collector's Edition DVD was shown, highlighting the "new chapter" and "chapter coming to an end" storylines.

Michael Cole continued to be displeased with Bret Hart winning the US Title after the break. Cole asked didn't Hart get enough at his Wrestlemania moment? Next, the commentators brought up a new Pay-Per-View concept "Money in the Bank". Tickets will go on sale Saturday at 10AM EST for the Kansas City, MO event here at Ticketmaster.

They showed Cena beating Wade Barrett in the "Beat the Clock challenge" on Raw two weeks ago. Cena was about to announce his stipulation for the OTL PPV match against Batista but he was kicked down by Sheamus before he could. Tonight Cena looks to defeat Sheamus for his first time over.

They did a mock commercial with Santino for Raw, based on the Don Cuervo man commercials. At the end, Santino was seated at a table with Jillian and the Bella Twins. He sipped a drink saying he only prefers Raw. Then he spit his drink in Jillian's face and said it tastes like goat urine.

Eve & The Bella Twins vs. Team LayCool & Maryse

Layla and Michelle each came to the ring wearing WWE Womens Championship belts. They showed what happened on Smackdown where there was a 2-on-1 handicap title match versus Beth Phoenix. Layla took the pinfall for the win after Beth and Michelle knocked into each other and Michelle fell out of the ring. Cole and Lawler announced that the Divas Championship will be on the line at OTL, Eve defends against Maryse.

Maryse went after Eve from the start. The two divas were yanking on each other's hair, so Michelle and Layla and the Bellas pulled them apart to start the match. During the contest, the ref became distracted with one of the Bellas on the apron. Michelle ran over and kicked her off.

In the closing moments, the lega Bella scored a series of moves including repeated dropkicks. She knocked Maryse off the apron, then went for a flying crossbody off the corner. McCool moved away though. As Michelle gained the advantage, Maryse slapped her back for a tag in. Maryse rushed over and grabbed the Bella and hit the French Kiss DDT for the win.

Afterwords, Eve had to be held back by the other Bella from getting in the ring to go after Maryse. The ref kept Maryse away from Eve inside the ring.

Winners: Maryse, Michelle McCool and Layla win via pinfall over Eve Torres & The Bella Twins.

Josh Matthews was backstage with WWE Champion John Cena. Matthews said his recent actions have been questioned including the fact he took a match against Sheamus six nights ahead of the OTL PPV. Cena said he chose to fight Sheamus tonight to take him out, so he's not an obstacle at Over the Limit. He said he chose the I Quit match against Batista. Since it's the last time they'll meet, he wants no dispute over who's the best. Cena said he forfeited the rematch clause because if Batista makes him say I Quit, he doesn't deserve another title shot. Cena said he won't be a quitter, and he doesn't underestimate Batista.

Randy Orton vs. Jack Swagger
Pick your Poison match #2

Orton would now have to face Edge's opponent choice in a match. Fans chanted R-K-O as Orton awaited his opponent. Finally, World Heavyweight Champion Jack Swagger arrived to the ring. Cole reminded everyone that Swagger defeated Orton at the Extreme Rules PPV in the World title match. They cut to a shot of Christopher Gorham and Kari Matchett at ringside, stars of the new USA show "Covert Affairs".

During the match, Swagger had momentum and Orton was down near the corner. Swagger went for his running splash off the corner, but Orton got up and kicked him in the gut as he was coming down. Orton took control from there and managed to get his DDT on Swagger from the middle rope. Orton went into a rage and dropped to the mat, pounding away on it. Just as he was stalking his opponent, Edge slid into the ring. Orton went right at him, and the ref called for the DQ.

Orton tried to RKO Edge, but got shoved at Swagger. Instead, Orton hit the RKO on Swagger. As Orton turned back around, Edge hit him with the Spear. Edge raised his arms up over the fallen Orton as his music played.

Winner: Randy Orton wins due to disqualification over Jack Swagger when Edge interfered.

A WWE ad for WWE NXT on SyFy aired. There will be another elimination on tomorrow night's show. Cole and Lawler talked about this Sunday's Over the Limit Pay-Per-View and the upcoming matches including CM Punk vs Rey Mysterio, Orton vs Edge, Big Show vs Jack Swagger and Batista vs Cena.

Justin Roberts introduced guest host Buzz Aldrin, part of NASA history. Aldrin came to the ring with a mix of fans standing to applaud him while others stayed seated in Canada. Buzz tried to rile up the crowd then began talking about space achievements. The crowd started up the "WHAT?!" response and Buzz Aldrin tried to bring up some Canadian contributions to the space program. Buzz seemed at a loss for words once again saying how great Raw is. He paused with nothing to say as Zack Ryder's music hit.

Ryder came to the ring with his new diva, Alicia Fox. He said Canada doesn't even have a space program then accused Buzz Aldrin's walk on the moon of being faked. Aldrin said the last guy who said that to him got punched. They showed a clip on the Titantron of Aldrin slugging some person who came up to him saying he was a liar and a coward. Ryder and Fox started to back away. Buzz said not to worry he won't pounce on them. He kept talking as Evan Bourne's music started up. Buzz tried to announce that it will be Canada's own Gail Kim and Evan Bourne, but the music drowned him out.

Gail Kim & Evan Bourne vs. Zack Ryder & Alicia Fox

At one point in the match, Bourne knocked Ryder down near the corner. He climbed up the corner for the Air Bourne, but Alicia came in to roll Ryder out of the ring. She told Bourne to bring it. Instead, Bourne jumped off onto Ryder outside the ring. Meanwhile, in the ring Alicia grabbed Gail and tried to bring her center ring. Gail grabbed her arm and put her foot against Gail's throat then dropped to the mat for the winning pinfall.

After the win, Buzz Aldrin got in the ring with Gail Kim and Evan Bourne to try to have a WWE moment for the paparazzi. Buzz did the moonwalk making Cole and Lawler giddy, so they had to show a replay of it.

Winners: Evan Borune & Gail Kim win via pinfall over Zack Ryder & Alicia Fox.

Another ad for Over The Limit was shown, this time higlighting Swagger vs Big Show World Title match. Then it was on to a new WWE skit commercial. This one featured Goldust on a blind date. He asked the woman "so should I call you?" and she said "No" disgusted. Then he asked if it was ok if he breathed on her. She again said "No" but just as he blew on her face. It ended with 15 minutes will save you 15% on WWEShop.com.

John Cena vs. Sheamus

heamus began to dominate Cena outside the ring and then inside. He whipped Cena hard to the corner, then continued the attack. After a near fall he went for a suplex, but Cena blocked it and suplexed Cena instead. Cena got up then threw Sheamus shoulder-first into the ringpost. Sheamus fell out of the ring. Once he was finally back in, Cena went for Attitude Adjustment. Sheamus slid off and then hit a backbreaker on Cena. However, Cena responded once again as the two went against the ropes and he hit a Sidewalk slam on Sheamus.

Sheamus was able to recover and caught Cena hanging through the ropes on the apron with a knee. Cena eventually got back onto the apron. Sheamus went for the boot kick, but Cena avoided it. With Cena in control he went for the Bulldog, but Sheamus shoved Cena off it then hit a slide dropkick to knock Cena to the outside.

Cena gained momentum again, hitting a series of shoulder blocks and then slamming Sheamus on his back for the "You Can't C Me" and Five Knuckle Shuffle elbow drop. He went for Attitude Adjustment near the ropes, but Sheamus grabbed the top rope. Cena mustered up strength. Just then, Batista arrived to the ring. Cena dumped Sheamus over the top rope to the outside, then Batista grabbed him for a Spinebuster. He continued to beat on Cena with two more Spinebusters and then went for the Batista Bomb. He didn't do it though, dropping Cena to the mat and locking on the same submission hold he put on Mark Henry last week. Cena began to turn purple in the face with the ref trying to break it up. Batista yelled at Cena to say he quit but he wouldn't as Raw went off the air.

Winner: John Cena wins due to disqualification over Sheamus when Batista interfered.

I thought the commercial free RAW was a great way to showcase the PPV Over the Limit, I'm surprised they dont do this more often.
