Smackdown Recap 05.14.10

Smackdown Recap from Buffalo, NY:

After the opening fireworks show, Grisham and Striker reminded fans that a new IC Champ will be crowned tonight. Also, Rey Mysterio and CM Punk will battle one-on-one in the ring.

Smackdown GM Theodore Long was in the ring with the Intercontinental title. He then said to introduce the competitors, and Long sat near ringside holding onto the belt.

Kofi Kingston vs. Christian
Intercontinental Title match

Striker noted that Buffalo has previously seen the IC title change hands three times. Those 3 previous times were: Honky Tonk Man in 1987 (WWF Superstars), Jeff Jarrett in 1999 (Fully Loaded PPV) and Lance Storm in 2001 (RAW).

Kofi knocked Christian to the outside. Kofi went for a jump over the top rope, with Christian moving away. Christian jumped from off the inside corner to take out Kofi outside the ring. Smackdown took a commercial break and returned with Christian in control in the ring.

Christian charged at Kofi in the corner. Kofi caught Christian with his own pendulum kick from the apron, then did a flying cross body for a near fall. Kofi was about to go for the Boom Boom leg drop, but Christian blocked and went for a pin. Kofi reversed for his own near fall. Kofi tried to leapfrog Kofi at one point, but Christian caught him with an electric chair to slam him back. Christian and Kofi continued trading near falls.

Kofi eventually landed the Boom Boom leg drop, then got ready for Trouble in Paradise. Christian blocked and hit an inverted DDT for the near fall. After several more moves went for Killswitch but Kofi elbowed out of it, then slammed Christian for a near fall. Christian hit his own pendulum kick then a flying uppercut to take Kofi down. He went for Killswitch but Kofi shoved him to the corner. Christian hopped onto the middle of the corner then went for the reverse Sunset Flip. Kofi escaped it, surprising Christian. Christian got up and then ate a Trouble in Paradise kick to the head.

Teddy Long got in the ring to hand Kofi the IC title belt. Kofi was ecstatic. Christian was dejected in defeat but still gave a handshake and hug before leaving. Suddenly, Drew McIntyre's music came on and the fired IC champ came walking out to the ramp. Teddy grabbed a mic and said he would have security escort him out of the building again tonight. Drew came to the ring to stare down Kofi, then slapped some sort of envelope against Teddy. Teddy opened the envelope to read a letter with Drew smirking. Teddy said he was sorry to Kofi, but he would have to take his title. Teddy said he'd talk to him about it later, but Kofi shook his head. Teddy ordered Kofi to hand the title back to him as GM of Smackdown. Kofi did it but was not happy. Teddy Long handed the title back to Drew McIntyre, who smiled at Teddy then left the ring. He smirked, then turned to hoist the title up and showed Kofi several times from the ramp.

Winner: Kofi Kingston wins via pinfall over Christian to become the new Intercontinental Champion. Title was returned to Drew McIntyre right after the match though.

Jesse Guyver vs. Shad Gaspard

Gaspard pummeled the amateur opponent early on, taking him down in a headlock. Gaspard choked Guyver against the ropes with the ref counting and warning him. Guyver started trying to fight back, punching his way out of the corner, but got booted down. Gaspard continued to toss Guyber around, with Guyver going for a Sunset Flip, but Shad held his ground. Shad picked him up for the STO and the victory.

Winner: Shad Gaspard wins via pinfall over Jesse Guyver.

JTG & MVP vs. The Dude Busters

Caylen Croft and Trent Barretta are The Dude Busters. Striker called Dude Busters his favorite tag team right now. Grisham called them "goofballs" saying their biggest claim to fame is beating Call of Duty in one day.

Early on, all four men were in the ring with JTG and MVP managing to clothesline both of the Dude Busters outside the ring. Eventually, they made a comeback and Barretta was kneeing JTG in the corner. Croft got in a cheapshot with the ref distracted. The Dude Busters continued effectively tagging in and out to wear down JTG. JTG finally escaped after a clothesline on Croft, and then kicking away Barretta. MVP came in on fire, using a facebuster on Barretta, then hitting the Ballin' elbow drop for a near fall. Croft tried to elbow drop MVP who moved away so he hit Barretta instead. Grisham called it "dude on dude crime". MVP tossed Croft out of the ring, as JTG beat up Barretta. MVP finally managed to hit the Playmaker on Barretta to take the win for his team.

Winner: MVP & JTG win via pinfall over The Dude Busters.

Punk said he forgives them, because he knows Rey Mysterio put the doubt in them. Punk said Mysterio is trying to poison them, and they need to get the poison out. He told them to stay backstage while he fights Mysterio tonight. Punk said he'll show why he is the leader of SES. Punk said at OTL Rey's salvation will begin, but it will be a long journey. When Smackdown returned a whole bunch of trophies were in the ring along with a Scrabble board and some uniforms, as well as the World Heavyweight title. Jack Swagger came out in a suit and tie. He looked around at everything inside the ring and then paused with a mic in hand. Swagger said he needed a moment first, then removed his suit coat. He got down and did some pushups on the ring mat which was covered in a red carpet piece.

Swagger said he called up daddy and had him assemble every medal, trophy and piece of memorabilia so he could share them with the fans, and Big Show. Swagger said one of these trophies is enough for most people. He kept talking as Smackdown took a commercial break. When they returned he was still talking asking if the audience members were jealous of all his accomplishments.

Just then, Big Show's music hit and out came the World's Largest Athlete. Show came to the ring to admire Swagger's prizes.

Show dropped the Scrabble board on the mat then stepped on it. Swagger told Show to not touch anything else and kindly leave so he could talk about this stuff. Show picked up the Viennese ballroom dancing trophy and started to mock dance around with it, then smashed the head of it on the mat.

Swagger was visibly upset so he kicked Show in the midsection. Swagger tried to DDT Show, but couldn't budge him. Show planted Swagger face first on the mat. Finally, Swagger escaped to the outside, and inside Big Show started to break his trophies one by one. Swagger was livid outside the ring. Show kicked a football out into the audience. He took a baseball bat to the huge pictures of Swagger as well. Finally, Show picked up the World Heavyweight Title and raised it up with one hand.

Beth Phoenix vs. Rosa Mendes

The Glamazon returned home to show off her WWE Women's Championship belt. Grisham noted that Beth suffered a knee injury last week against Rosa Mendes on Superstars. Smackdown consultant Vickie Guerrero arrived out with a mic in hand yelling "excuse me". Vickie told Rosa she needs to exit the ring. Rosa started to whine about it asking "Why?" Vickie said as "General Manager of Raw" and "official Smackdown consultant". Vickie said Michelle McCool has asked for her rematch clause to occur here tonight in Buffalo. They showed highlights of Kofi defeating Christian for the title, but then Drew McIntyre came to the ring in a suit and gave GM Teddy Long a note from Mr. McMahon. Teddy was forced to take the title away from Kofi and hand it back to Drew McIntyre.

Backstage, Teddy Long was watching a flatscreen monitor when Drew McIntyre came into the room. Drew asked why he wanted to see him. Teddy brought up how it seems Drew can get whatever he wants around there. Teddy said he realized he can't take anything away from him, but he can give him something. A match against Big Show was booked for next week's Smackdown.

Striker and Grisham discussed the upcoming Over the Limit matches including Cena vs Batista, Edge vs Orton and Swagger vs Big Show.

Rey Mysterio vs. CM Punk

At one point in the match, Rey managed to knock Punk to the outside. Rey tried for a jump off the apron, but Punk ducked it, then came back to clobber Mysterio into the crowd barrier. After a commercial break, Punk had Rey held back in a submission hold. Rey started a comeback, but as he went up on the corner, Punk knocked his footing out, causing Rey to be hung upside down. Punk hit a running dropkick on Rey to drop him out of the corner.

Punk beat up Mysterio outside the ring some, then came back into the ring with a springboard clothesline for a near fall. He used a submission hold to wear down Rey some more. Rey used kick moves to break out of it, then ducked a Punk clothesline and hit a Bulldog move.

In the closing moments, Mysterio was able to knock Punk against the ropes. He started for the 619, then saw Luke Gallows rush down to the ring and get on the apron. Rey knocked Gallows off, but the distraction allowed Punk to try a rollup pin. Rey escaped and kicked Punk back onto the ropes. This time he hit 619. Mysterio dove off the top rope for the headbutt. He had the pinfall, but suddenly a person in a hooded sweatshirt and black gloves/mask came in the ring. Rey stopped the pin to go after them. Just as he was ready to throw a punch, the person pulled the hood down and it was Serena. Rey was shocked.

Just then, the real mystery man snuck into the ring behind Rey, wearing all black. He knocked Rey down from behind. Luke Gallows came into the ring and did the Gallows Pole on Mysterio. Punk slid over The mystery man and Gallows then loaded Mysterio onto Punk's shoulders so he could connect on GTS. Punk sat Rey up, then put one hand on his heart and another arm raised up. Punk yelled out "I pledge allegiance to the StraightEdge Society". Punk's music started up, with Punk comforting Mysterio as Smackdown went off the air.

Winner: Rey Mysterio wins due to disqualification of CM Punk.

I think I have figured who the mystery man is: Cody Rhodes
1. The move he did to Rey this Friday looks a lot like the Cross Rhodes finisher.
2. Cody wasn't in action this week, last week he was and there was no mystery man.
So thats my guess.

That's a good guess...the guy in the ring this past episode didn't seem like Darren Young's height either. In the past he wasn't wearing gloves on his hands and they appeared very light complexion. We probably find out at Over the Limit. I'm guessing Rey wins and fights off the mystery guy or unveils who it is.
