Raw Review 04/11/11

This past week's episode of Raw featured plenty packed into the 2 hour show on USA. The biggest story was of course Edge announcing his sudden retirement from the WWE. Also, the show gave way to a new Divas champion, new #1 contenders for the WWE Title, a coming soon promo for a diva, and a tag team match for Extreme Rules.

First up, the Edge retirement is being discussed at length. It's tough to see Adam Copeland leaving the WWE Universe in this capacity. You have to wonder if he's going to take over in a commentary role at some point on Smackdown, because he'd do a great job there. He very well may go the road of Shawn Michaels and stay out of the WWE spotlight so he can enjoy his personal life. However, a recent tweet from his pal Christian makes it sound as if Edge will be a Hall of Famer next year. This news is still a bit of a shock because Edge was just seen wrestling a Wrestlemania match a few weeks ago. He'll surely be missed.

For the other topics of this past week's Raw, it appears Awesome Kong, the former TNA Knockout Champion, is on her way to the WWE ring soon. Her first promo featured Kong off camera, but holding a Barbie-style doll and flicking its head off. With the segment on Raw, it seems after Eve's loss she is doubting the rest of the divas, and there's dissension in the ranks. So who will Kong be going after?

Maybe this is why the WWE Divas Championship was transferred to Brie Bella? If any diva can handle two conniving divas, it will be Awesome Kong. There's no reason she won't get that title at some point.

Raw also gave us two matches for Extreme Rules. One match was made during the Jerry Lawler victory over Jack Swagger. Lawler chose to have a good old fashioned tag team match, with Jim Ross as his partner against Michael Cole. Since Cole berated and slapped his trainer, Jack Swagger, Lawler wisely made Swagger Cole's tag partner. We all see it coming, Swagger abandoning Cole during the match, leaving him to fend for himself against Lawler and Ross.

The other match came as a result of a five-man gauntlet match on Raw to determine the #1 contender for The Miz's WWE Championship. Fighting in the gauntlet were Randy Orton, John Morrison, R-Truth, Dolph Ziggler and John Cena. Most people expected Cena to prevail, but in fact, R-Truth won due to Miz interfering. The Raw GM decided that both Cena and Truth would be the dual #1 contenders. Why? Because it gives Miz the ability to win the match without actually pinning Cena at Extreme Rules. Will there be a special stipulation on the match though, which gives Miz some outside help via Alex Riley? The WWE Universe will wait to find out!

Finally, in case you've missed it, here's a link to the "That's What I Am" movie trailer. The new film from WWE Studios will star Ed Harris and WWE's own, Randy Orton.
