CM Punk's World Championship
CM Punk's World Championship Reign
As of this past Monday night, there's a major title back on the Raw television show. Thanks to Batista, CM Punk was able to finally cash in his Money in the Bank contract at just the right time. Punk possibly shocked the world, taking a page out of the Ultimate Opportunist's own playbook as he waited for Edge to be beaten down and without backup in the ring. Congratulations go out to CM Punk and the WWE for a classic moment, but this raises the question: how seriously can Punk be considered as a World champion? Not only that, but will Punk simply be a transitional champion?
On one side of the equation, Punk hasn't really proven himself as champion. He took the title away from Edge, but all thanks to Batista beating Edge senseless beforehand. Punk also successfully defended the title later in the night, against JBL. But the win came thanks to the distraction and interference run by John Cena along with Cryme Tyme. So in reality, Punk has yet to really be tested. In weeks prior, he seemed to be on a downward streak, losing matches to guys like Randy Orton, William Regal and even Edge.
Now on the other side of things is the idea that wrestling isn't always about overpowering your opponent as much as it's about using brainpower and taking advantage of opportunities. Punk did exactly what Edge has done in the past, cashing in the briefcase at the perfect opportunity. Why work harder than you have to in order to capture the title? Punk now can etch his name along with many other greats to have held the title such as Batista, Undertaker and Ric Flair.
So where does the title picture go from here? It looks like John Cena, Batista, Rey Mysterio and even Chris Jericho may be amongst those lining up for a title shot at Punk. JBL still will continue to be the major heel going after him, until we see a return from guys like Randy Orton and William Regal. And there's always the possibility that Edge's future wife and Smackdown GM, Vickie Guerrero, makes a Smackdown to Raw trade. Don't be surprised if Triple H gets swapped for Punk, bringing the World Heavyweight title back into Edge's realm. If not, Edge will most likely be challenging Triple H, with Vickie helping make the Game's life hell. The possibilities will definitely be interesting for the future of both shows.
