Smackdown Recap 06.27.08

Smackdown Recap from Houston, TX:

Smackdown opened with highlights of the 2008 WWE Draft. Amongst those drafted were CM Punk to Raw, Jeff Hardy to Smackdown, Matt Hardy to ECW, Batista to Raw, Mr. Kennedy to Smackdown and Jim Ross to Smackdown. The final selection of the night was the WWE champion Triple H who also moved over to Smackdown.

Vickie Guerrero was shown backstage and expressed her sincere wishes for Mr. McMahon to recover after this past week's accident on Raw. Vickie said she needs to focus on other things now like her upcoming wedding and the new acquisitions Smackdown made in the draft. Vickie introduced Smackdown's newest commentator from the draft, Jim Ross, who made his way down the ramp to join Mick Foley. JR shook Mick's hand and said he has a feeling they can take the show to new levels.

The newest member of Smackdown, Triple H, made his way down the ramp to start the show. In the ring, the Game spoke about his new home, Smackdown. HHH said it was good to see familiar faces like Mick Foley and JR at ringside, and even more importantly, all the WWE fans. Edge began talking about his upcoming title defense against Cena at Night of Champions. All of a sudden, Edge's theme music hit, interrupting HHH's speech.

Edge came down to the ring with the World Heavyweight title. In the ring, Edge told HHH he believes they can coexist. HHH told Edge that they both have egos, but HHH's is bigger. HHH added that after Sunday only he will still have a title. Edge became upset and advised Triple H to respect him just like the rest of the roster, because Smackdown is his show. All of a sudden, Batista's theme music hit and the Animal came out. As Edge looked out at the ramp, Batista began to come down. HHH grabbed Edge from behind and tossed him over the top rope. As Edge stood up, he received a spear from Batista, tackling him down. Batista got into the ring with HHH as Edge backed up the ramp. Both Triple H and Batista held up the respective belts, and JR said we may see this scene on Sunday.

Kane & Big Show vs. MVP & Mark Henry

Three of the men involved in Sunday's ECW title match wrestled in this match of behemoths. This past Tuesday, it was Mark Henry defeating Kane in the ring, due to Big Show being at ringside to distract.

In tonight's match, MVP decided he had had enough. MVP rolled under the ropes to the outside. Mark Henry saw it and went to retrieve his partner. Henry tossed MVP back into the ring and as he got up, he was on the receiving end of a chokeslam from Kane.

Winner: Kane & Big Show win via pinfall over Mark Henry & MVP.

Backstage, Vickie was meeting with her wedding planner when Edge rushed in. Edge started complaining about how HHH and Batista treated him earlier, and how Batista still has his belt. Vickie told Edge to focus on his match with Matt Hardy later and their wedding in a few weeks. Vickie assured Edge he'd have his belt back later on.

When Smackdown returned Jim Ross & Foley introduced a highlight reel of new Smackdown member, Umaga, as he destroyed various opponents.

Finlay & Hornswoggle vs. Ryder & Hawkins

After ramming Hawkins into the corner, Finlay hoisted him up on his shoulders. Finlay hit the Celtic Cross to slam Hawkins to the mat, as Hornswoggle climbed the corner, then hit the Tadpole Frogsplash to win it. The two began to do an Irish jig in the ring, but Miz and Morrison came out to the ramp. The WWE tag champs pointed at their opponents and showed off their belts. In the ring, Finlay & Hornswoggle motioned that they'd soon have the belts around their waists.

Winners: Finlay & Hornswoggle win via pinfall over Ryder & Hawkins.

Matt Hardy vs. Edge

In a battle of champions, new ECW member Matt Hardy took on Edge. Matt gained serious momentum at one point, hitting an elbow drop off the ropes. Matt went for Twist of Fate, but Edge blocked, so Matt hit a DDT instead. Unable to take the pin, Matt went for a moonsault off the ropes, but Edge avoided it. The two continued battling it out with Matt trying for Twist of Fate several more times. On one attempt, Edge shoved Matt towards the corner where he almost ran into the ref. Matt stopped himself, but as he turned Edge was ready and ran at him to deliver a Spear.

Winner: Edge wins via pinfall over Matt Hardy.

Jim Ross & Mick Foley ran down the various matches for Night of Champions including Triple H vs. Cena, Edge vs. Batista and the Triple Threat ECW title match.

Kelly Kelly, Cherry & Michelle McCool vs. Maryse, Victoria & Natalya

Vickie Guerrero was shown watching the match on a TV backstage. The three heel divas played keep away with Michelle McCool as they dominated her in their corner. At one point, Natalya put Michelle into a submission hold to stretch her back, but Michelle escaped. Michelle eventually got away from Maryse to tag in Cherry. Cherry began to gain momentum and went right at Maryse hitting several moves. Cherry whipped Maryse to the corner, but Natalya and Victoria came over to interfere. Eventually, all 6 divas got into it in the ring. Kelly Kelly went at Victoria in the ring. Michelle tackled Natalya outside the ring. Cherry was still stunned from Natalya's attack on her, allowing Maryse to roll her up for the pin.

Winners: Victoria, Maryse & Natalya win via pinfall over Kelly Kelly, Michelle McCool & Cherry.

Announcement was made that Mr. Kennedy returns to Smackdown next week.

Domino vs. Vladimir Kozlov

Domino showed an impressive performance as he was able to knock Kozlov down at one point off the ropes with a shoulder block. Domino went to the corner ropes to jump off at Kozlov. Kozlov threw a shoulder of his own to knock Domino down to the mat from the air. Kozlov took the pin to keep his win streak in tact.

Vladimir Kozlov wins via pinfall over Domino.

Rey Mysterio walking backstage and came up to Hornswoggle. Horney gave Rey his leprechaun hat, then Rey did a kick up in the air before giving the hat back. Hornswoggle waved as Rey continued walking, seeming sad to see Rey leave Smackdown.

Rey Mysterio came down to the ring for his final Smackdown appearance. Rey spoke about coming to Smackdown six years ago with all sorts of dreams and expectations. Rey said thanks to fan support he became Cruiserweight champ, a tag team champion and even World Heavyweight champion. Rey said he'll always have Smackdown and its fans in his heart. Rey said now the journey continues as he goes at some of the toughest athletes Raw has to offer. Rey finished his speech off in Spanish before posing to the crowd from the corner. Batista came down to the ring, shook Rey's hand then hugged him.

Batista vs. Umaga

In the main event, the newest addition to Smackdown Umaga, took on Batista, who is now on Raw. Umaga dominated for the most part, until Batista was able to hit a Spinebuster from off the ropes. Batista delivered a kick to Umaga and prepared for a Batista Bomb. Just then, Ryder, Hawkins, Chavo Guerrero and Edge all rushed down to the ring. La Familia began to beatdown Batista. Batista fought back from the corner, but Umaga caught him with a vicious kick, knocking him to the mat. Umaga drug Batista over and sat him in the corner. Edge encourage Umaga to charge and hit the hip splash, further destroying Batista. La Familia then pulled Batista into center ring and encouraged Umaga to jump off the ropes. As Umaga got up on the ropes, HHH charged down to the ring and pushed him. HHH got into the ring and began to fight La Familia, knocking down Chavo then hitting the Pedigree on Hawkins. Batista got back up and clotheslined Edge out over the ropes. HHH and Batista looked on from the ring at La Familia as Smackdown ended.

Winner: Batista wins due to disqualification over Umaga.
